First of all the fashion report: White sleeveless Champion Tech Shirt, Black running shorts with gray and white accents, white Atlanta Braves visor (not a fan, just needed one that day) white socks (below the ankle) and Saucony shoes with baby blue accents.

Now, this was my first race of the season. 3 years ago this was my 2nd ever 5K, and I took first place in my age division – a total fluke – but I accepted the award. Last year, I didn’t even place and had bettered my time of the previous year by over 2 minutes.

This year it was a bit on the cool side with the rain just passing on 50 degrees, steady breeze out of the east so it was a bit chilly. I decided to leave my jacket in the truck rather than tie it around my waist later (Ribs). Mile one I ran in 9:45 and this included the first of many hills. 2nd mile was 9:47 with a rather large hill and a small walk break. I thought of DH as I ran by the water tables without taking any. Third mile was my slowest at an even 10 minutes – simply running out of steam. Had enough in the tank though to sprint to the finish line with MrHopeful and my oldest daughter cheering me on. Finish time: 30:21 looking back I should have pushed myself harder, but it is done now.

I won 3rd place in my age group out of 9 (small race). So I have a little award to show off! Now with this my first race – should I quite while I’m ahead??

Thanks for reading and have a nice Memorial Day Weekend!!

~Mary

No, you don't quit now! You are running very well, and 3rd of 9 is nothing to sneeze at. Very well done. You tap danced your way through that race quite steadily. I hope you had a good time, and remember the time you saved by not tying your jacket around your waist. Spareribs

Great Job Mary to take 3rd of 9 in AG and hardware! You might have thought (known) you could do better but you still placed very well. Family cheering down the finish line is priceless!

Mary, that's great. I've had poor performance and got hardware, and I've done well and walked away empty. It's all good. The most important thing is having fun. If it isn't, why bother? It sounds wonderful! And you had family support!!

Thanks.......

Sounds like the Hopeful family had a fun day.......and came away with the EXTRA reward of hardware. Being 3rd is definitely something to brag about.

Of course the real reward comes from all the benefits of running and the ability to be ABLE to participate.

Congratulations and thanks for posting this RR

Good job

Great job. Be proud of that hardware; There was 6 other ladies that would have loved to have it, but you earned it. Never quit. Whatever you do, never quit.

Quit?? Most of us would be thrilled with a top-third AG, size of field be darned, and just looking for the next race. Nice job Mary, and I don't need to remind you of all the progress you've been making.

And now with that 5th-wheel trailer, you really should make plans to take a weekend camping somewhere near Flint and enter the Crim this year. It is a real thrill to be in a town completely taken over by runners and to start and finish with 1000s of others on those old brick streets. We'll be looking for you!

Oh Mary, why do you want to quit? You're running very well and almost leading your age group home again in this one. Is racing always about time? I think not. I have a 10K coming up next month which I'm going to enjoy running because my friends will be running it with me. I add speed sessions to my training to try and eek a bit more and I enjoy doing this even if it is hard at times, but at the end of the day, the race is to be enjoyed, so go do it again and enjoy yourself!

Maybe you should go first: tell me what weekends are open and I'll tell you if the Crim is one of them. But anyway, it's always the last Saturday in August, so the 25th this year. There will be quite a Boomer crowd and we'd enjoy having you join us.

So sweet of you to think of your husband when you didn't stop for water at the tables.
Congratulations on your hardware! Now rest up and get ready for your next race. Excellent fashion report by the way.
