Yes John, I was curious too. She ran under an hour, and ran the last mile in 7 minutes. If the subject of glycogen depletion was an issue for difficult hilly trail runs, how much GU needs to be ingested? Tet was just trying to light me up. Nancy: You ran with courage and a competitive spirit and for a difficult course you ran it quite well. Very happy for you. Spareribs

Mari - what a thrill oh super butterfly girl goddess to have such a wonderful introduction to trail running being a 10K race in such a memorable location plus doing it in under an hour too and whipping that smart-alecky couple. You are really something. Since you like Bloomsday too, . . . I apparently passed a radio announcer duo as a friend said they were whining the next day on their show that they got "passed on Doomsday Hill by an older guy runnin' barefoot.". Mutual {{hugs}}} for us on that one except anyone who associates that word with you must be so young to have been born in this century. I don't know how it would/will compare to a road 10 for you but, for some runners, our fastest times actually turn out to be on trails even up to marathon distances. With all your viginity talk though, I'm ready to check it out again but maybe at the Cutthroat Classic in August. In the meantime, I'm pretty sure I know whose advice you took and why you did so well but you are a wise boomer goddess not to reveal it now because it's pretty clear with your sub-60, you both can probably beat the other one right now (if he has enough courage to run 10K in the mountains with us). .

No! I am not running any trail races, and especially not with you Tet, you GU smuggler! Spareribs

Mariposa, I was worried about you not hydrating properly for a 10K trail race (and we know that trail races take longer than road races) -- that is too long to go without hydration. But! My dear, you showed the mountain and that silly couple what you could do! Awesome, awesome, awesome!

Mariposai,I enjoyed reading this thread and your race report. Of course, Spareribs is right about no gu during a 10K race, even on a trail. I'm on the fence about water: and it's not clear to me what you actually did about water in the race. Did you carry water with you? Was there a water stop? One more thing: possibly I'm out of line here, but given that you quote Steve Prefontaine in your sig, it seems to me if you were enjoying the view during your race, you weren't running hard enough. The only enjoyable thing about a race should be breaking the spirits and treading on the fallen bodies of your competitors. MariposaGreat race. Congratulations on achieving your goals, all 3 of them. Remember it does not matter whose advice you took as longs as you learned during the race so that you can make the right decisions on the next one. Way to go Tall

Did I carry water with me? Heck, no. I just hydrated and took proper pre-race preparation and off I went. They provided water at the 5k point, gatorade and listen to this Ribs-Gu. I personally just took the water and gatorade and not the Gu. After all, I had my own plan to follow. The weather was dry and very hot, which made it for a more difficult finish time, but I had a third goal, remember? and that kept me going. Hydration was the main complain with every runner I talked with after the race. My signature quote by Prefontaine is true to me as to the fastest runner. Believe it or not, we middle of the pack/slower runners do race to give our ALL and our BEST as much as you fast runners. So, even when I am running an over 5 hours marathon I am still outthere giving my all and my best as not to sacrifice the GIFT. Also, I still have to take care off the ITband issue. DH, what a profound statement---"The only enjoyable thing about a race should be breaking the spirits and treading on the fallen bodies of your competitors...". I am such a newbie at racing that I have not gotten to that point yet. Tall, you are so right, I have learned so much from the tips I received here and also from the race itself. Holey Moley!!! I've been thinking it would be nice to see you again at a race, but I'm not so sure now. !!!

mariposai, You can hone your competitive instinct by knocking over small children as Econo likes to do. In between races, you can sit at home and pull the wings off houseflies. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

congratulations, mariposai! great race report, and i know exactly what those people meant about stopping to look at the scenery there can hardly be a more beautiful place to run. i wish i could have joined you but i was in no condition for a run like that; while you were driving down route 20 you might have seen pelle and me moving along at a snail's pace; we did 6 miles in 1.30 yesterday, which would have landed me at number 97 out of 101 runners )we won't be home for either the run the sun (i thought that was in june?!) or the cutthroat, unfortunately, but maybe next year i'll try the mazama 10k. meanwhile, let's see if we can get together this week! ------------------ susan

A gorgeous report from a gorgeous lady! I enjoyed your report so much and this thread has made me laugh over and over. I especially appreciated your use of patchouli lotion to be in sync with nature. Congratulations on an excellent first trail 10K!

sorry so late getting back to this. Hadn't had a chance to get back to the forum . . . I think I mis-read Spareribs seemingly snooty post and criticism of your tagline incorrectly. Sorry, Spareribs. The danger of forums; I'm still learning. But I have to defend myself again. Gel right before the start actually serves a different purpose than providing carbs, which I agree you don't need for a 10k. If you re-read my post -- I said I take one shortly before the start. I do so before short races to prevent my blood sugar from rapidly falling the first mile or two, which I'd had difficulty with my beginning years of racing. Read a very good article about it a few years back and it's done the trick. No more shakes early on in races. So, that's why I mentioned the gel before the start. Great job on the trial run, mariposai! [This message has been edited by Soundrunner1012 (edited Jun-05-2007).]
