ok, i wasn't going to post a race report, but this picture (on our local running club web page) just made me do it:

i passed kid at mile 1, thinking he was gassed. he passed me at mile 2.5, i had nothing. he beat me by 3 seconds, dang 11 year old.

my boston time 3:05 predicts an 18:54 5k, and i ran 19:09. this is the first time in my life my 5k time has been slower than my marathon time would predict... must mean i'm a marathon runner?

nobody fast showed up, so i won my age group. 29th overall out of 200. i usually run under 18 in this race, uggg.

go walter! i gave him a big pat on the back and told him he finished well in the chute. congratulated him again getting water. then out on a cool down with friends we saw him and his pals running a 2 mile cooldown and i clapped for him and told him he ran a great race (sorry ribs)...

but really what i'm thinking: 194 days till sacramento... grrrr....

edited to tone down the pity party... neighbors were complaining.

Consider yourself fortunate MC. There's a 14 yr old girl here who usually beats me!

That is a great photo. I'm trying to visualize what caption the running club had with it....

Mcsolar, this is where I say, "Oh cry me a river." I usually get beat by pregnant women and people pushing triplets so no reason to hang your head over Walter. hehe.

Looks like it was pretty hot that day -- maybe that slowed you down a tad?

Thanks for the laugh. You'll see that 18:54 soon!

Great photo! Remember he's carrying a lot less weight.

Still a solid race for you with an AG win. Those times will come down again.

LOL tomwhite, but I have to agree with you. Everyone knows that no kids are named "Walter" anymore. He's got to be in his 50s at least.

Nice run, emcee.

Great photo MC and by the looks of this kids form and his concentration I would have to agree that he is a star in the making if he sticks with it.

Congratulations on the AG award and we all know those times of yours will be coming back down.

I'ld like to know what the kid was thinking

These youngsters have no respect for their ELDERS these days. I'm sure if the roles had been reversed. . . . Ah well.
By looking at the pics; you weren't the only casualty Walter (if that's his real name) caused in this race. Looks like some younger fellas behind you. Can you imagine their thoughts? Got beat by a kid AND some old guy! What's the use?

ksrunr
enjoyed your report; now get back to training.

Notice how emcee's head is ever so slightly tilted to his right and Walter's head is ever so slightly tilted to his left...

I like the name Walter.

Hi MC,

Great picture.

I'm not in your league timewise - but your thread (and your running club's website) caught my eye. I went to Catalina HS and grew up just over the hill from your other training location - Catalina Foothills HS (before it was a high school).

I had a similar experience with an 11-12 year old last year in the Estes Park, CO 5K. I never thought he would finish strong, but he did - and it was pretty humbling.

Congrats on winning your age group.

Hey mc, at least he's 11 years old. I get smoked by a 9 year-old every Monday night in my running club. Little twerp...

And here's me getting edged out by a 14 year-old at this year's Shamrock run:

Econo has the right idea on how to deal with these little ingrates.

MC

Congrats on the hardware and wow that is some fast little kid. Happy I dont have to deal with any of those at the moment...my ego would be shattered (-:

You will get him next time. Yep it's a shame what marathon training does to 5K times...but you can recoup your form with a little time off the marathon treadmill.
