-Warning: longI arrived at SeaTac and made it down to Olympia quicker than expected, and I met Tet at the packet pickup. I was honored that he introduced me to someone as "his friend from Oklahoma." I had never met him before. That's just the way B&B'ers are. My race registration was missing, and I found out later the same thing happened to Dove, so I filled out a new form. I grinned when it said at the bottom, how many marathons have you completed? Now it was 11, and when I sent in my registration it was only 9 or 10. Preidcted finish time? I put down 4:58. I hooked up with Dove, and since we had some time to kill before the pasta load dinner, she offered to drive the course for me. That was cool and a very good idea to mentally prepare me. I saw the "bumps" in the middle of the course. Somehow they looked harder than what the elevation chart indicated. The pasta dinner was wonderful, and hopefully if you guys are patient enough, I can post some photos from that in the next week or so. I used a disposable camera. Let's get to the start line. Fashion report-yellow ribbon hat, Maniac yellow singlet, covered up by a white Inaugural Tulsa Route 66 Marathon sweatshirt, covered by a white plastic throwaway poncho, gray Nike shorts, white & blue Asics GT-2080's. I saw Tet and then Dove. I ran with her for quite a while. Actually I have to confess, I was right behind her as we started to climb the hills. I needed a focus, I told her, and I picked you, whether you like it or not! Things were going well and I felt lighthearted. I only had one little twinge from my toe. I pitched the sweatshirt after about a mile (which I picked up after the race when it was sopping wet), and then I had to catch Dove. That wasn't easy, but I got to tell her, "I think I have a PR in me today!" I pitched the poncho at mile 4. I was already pretty warm, and the temperature was only about 48. Dove introduced me to some other Maniacs, and I ran with them quite a bit. The hills were tough but I managed to stay on pace and never walked. Mile 16-18, I knew my prediction about the PR was right. But how much would it be? At Mile 23 or so I took the last hill, a long one, and I thought, damn that one's harder than the middle of the course with its steep ones. My watch said I could still PR so I must have been "drawing some interest in the bank" from a 9:30 split earlier. I started downhill and now I'm really loving this course. I reeled in several runners on the way into the finish and hit my PR by about 15 minutes with a finish of 4:45:20. It was just a perfect race. I smiled when I looked out at the pouring rain last night from The Oyster House and thought, I'm glad the real rain held off. It's incredible to think where this PR puts me. In the last 2 months, I've knocked about 35 minutes off. Now this is crazy. Dove and I are headed out this morning for another run. ------------------ My Profile

Karl, the progress you've made just since last fall is astonishing. Your training and racing (and racing, and racing, and racing) system is working very well for you. Congratulations!(ETA: Sure, Dove takes you running, but did she make you a turkey? Hmmm? Hmmm? Why do I have the feeling that you had a PR of 15 minutes thanks to the fact that you were trying to keep up with our godess Dove? Heck, it doesn´t matter what your motivation was, right? You got a HUGE PR and you had fun while doing it. Congratulations.

I'm with posie and sally, . . . if you could keep up to dove all the way to those first hills, you had it in the bag. Though you had a PR by 15 minutes, it is also very, very impressive that you also bested your last marathon just two weeks ago by almost 45 minutes (which might be a PR in its own right).Glad you got to enjoy the local oysters too. Being so mineral-rich, they've long been a part of my regular pre-race, cramp-prevention ritual but Olympia is the center of the oyster universe for us. It was a delight to meet you and get to share your anticipation for the race and well-deserved post-race exultation. You are the man! ETA: Karl - your enthusiasm (and speed) shows in your rr too and it's special to have a PR RR but, even without and though you might not think so or realize it, there're gems of information applicable to someone's running somewhere in almost all rr's especially, for me, ones from runners like you who are a little more serious about training than me so I can get the benefit of your experience without having to do the extend of training otherwise needed to reveal it.

Wonderful racing Karl! You don't let anything get you down, and I can picture you running in the rain and over those hills with a big smile on your face. Congratulations on that PR, I am sure it is just one of many coming this year.

Karl, that was an amazing day for you! Sometimes everything comes together so well! In your case, it all exceeded the wildest expectations, with a 15min PR just 2 weeks after the previous one! I am very happy for you . Not to mention some great boomer meetings, too. j

Nice to see you again, Karl. That is a challenging course for a PR, and although you don't really say it in your report, the weather got cruddier and cruddier as the day wore on... so, GREAT JOB!

Nice going, Karl! I think you'd better get a copy of Dove's marathon schedule and follow her more often. You are really doing well and I was happy to hear the toe didn't cause you any problems.

Wow, Karl, a fitting end to a greta weekend. It was greta meeting you and chatting like we've known each other for years. You sure showed that "challenging" course who was boss. I was thinking about you, Dove and Tet while I did my long run and that I should have did the marathon too. I felt good running in the rain. Hoping we meet up in the near future and share the same course. Congrats on the hugh PR!!!!!------------------ Good running!!! Mike's Profile
