Congratulations on a great race MS, I too "lurved" reading your race report. It was very amusing and yet informative at the same time. You did a great job of running pretty consistent splits. You finished in the top ten now just keep setting your sights just a bit higher and you'll be that top 5 before you know it!

Congratulations Sal! You've been training hard and it's nice to see you get the big PR Payoff. Woot! Woot!

Maybe we can get JohnMaas to predict the winning lottery numbers next?

mustang, i think the real answer is all of the above.

we all have a certain curve in the heart-rate vs. running speed plane. at any given time you can plot your hr vs. velocity... as you increase velocity first your hr will increase slowly, then it'll get steeper, and finally you'll reach a running velocity where your heart rate reaches the max. the simple-minded goal of training is to take that curve and push it to lower hr... i.e. to train your body to run at the same speed with lower heart rate.

but there is no escaping the dreaded heart-rate truth-o-meter. if you ran the half at a lower average heart rate, you worked less, and it's likely that you can race even faster. the simple-minded concept of racing is to put out as high of an effort for the whole race as you possibly can. hit your race heart rate in the first mile, and keep it pegged just below the red-line for the entire race. finding that red-line is what lydiard calls "sharpening", i think. i'm still looking for my red-line; i have raced a half at 89% max, and i think that's close to my limit. this can change in training too though.

you can use your knowledge for good or evil. a good use would be to look at your next goal; an evil use would be to lessen the importance of your race. choose good!

Your wish is my command. Original post edited. I hadn't realized the size of the climb to the turnaround. It doesn't really feel that significant.

Kate, I looked at the HR and thought, man she must have been getting tired. Then looked at the elevation chart and remembered you said there was a killer hill at the end, so that was a duh! No feeling guilty about Melinda, right? Remember? The hell with 'em! And spit on their shoes. ha!
jk ... Awesome run, girl. cj

You worked very hard to get here, and have gotten great coaching. It's clear that you understand what you are doing and why. First let me congratulate you on the PR, and that was very well done.

Sometimes you hit a race where it seems every elite runner in your AG and sex seems to have entered that day. I have to admit I was surprised at the placement considering your time. You will have other opportunities as you know and I don't think you are even close to being topped out at PR's for this or any distance. You are a fine runner. Spareribs

Geez. They split the age groups after posting the results: so instead of being 10/93 in 40-49, now I'm:

7/49 in 40/44. What a city. What an age group. Maybe they'll all turn 45 next spring :-)

Great run and a nice report. I feel like I just got out of math class (ah grade 10 math--the best two years of my life!!)

Slight negative split and a PB to boot, proves great prep and a well-managed race. Excellent. Keep it up and others will be cursing you soon.

Thanks for the wonderful RR Sally. I'm sure many of us identified all too well with your feelings near the end...and that's what makes it such a fun read. We were all right there with you.

Congrats on the sizzling PR!

Way to go, that is one great time. I loved the description of the course and of course the other fast old broads.

Oh, yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Sally!!! I'm too simple to understand the graphs, but a 10-minute smasheroo of your previous time is remarkable. What a rippah of a half you ran!

Another thing to celebrate in Ucluelet! Let the party commence.

Congrats, congrats!

Sally,

Normally I dislike and therefore ignore charts and heart-rate discussions. However, when they support my argument, I'll accept 'em, even when the person explaining them doesn't have upper-case characters on his keyboard.

I don't like to say I told you so, but what did I tell you? I told you to run 8:00 pace, and ignore everyone else's blather. Now it's clear I was right all along, as I generally am, no matter what Spareribs says.

So johnmaas gets your actual time right, but I was morally correct about the time you should have run--sheesh, you could have made up the difference on that initial downhill section--and therefore I am the rightful winner of whatever prize is being awarded in this competition. You can give my prize to Sans Souci to hold till the next time I see her.

Congratulations on a very, very fine race. Your achievement in this is just a testament to the excellent training you have done. It will get better and better.

I lurved this report for many reasons...the excellent description, the metronomic splits, the HR and profile charts and even the word 'lurves'...

Nice. Very nice.

Dark, Dahling, I don't think she's that kind of girl. Besides, she's too short.
