One of the best parts of racing is the chance to spend time with friends and family. The Palos Verdes marathon, half marathon and 5k is practically a hometown race and as huskydon mentioned it is one of the oldest continuously running marathons in the country. I got to see my buddies at the start; dromedary, SLOJim, and huskydon and meet a new imaginary friend; the famous and legendary srlopez! The marathon race starts earlier than the other races so srlopez and I lined up with the marathoners at the start line, and after a recording of the national anthem, we were off! The weather was perfect, cool and overcast until the last miles, the views were spectacular, and the course was as hilly as advertised. I wore my black shorts with white side panels, no fug, and a black and white sleeveless top with built in bra top. A white hat, a black hair scrunchy pulling my luxurious shoulder length hair into a ponytail, blue and white shoes and white wright socks completed my ensemble. I had my own personal support crew, Mr. Forward, on a mountain bike, ready to meet me where ever I needed him for a gu, water, advil or just loving encouragement. He also had a camera so I have some pictures to share of the adventure. Here is Mr. Forwards grueling prep during my first 9 miles of running: A good view of the lovely course and the weather, perfect for running! I had it so made, I was the only runner who had a personal attendant, ready to hand me a kleenex, a bag of sportbeans, anything I needed. Even elite marathoners don't have it this good. When I got grumpy (no its true, during a marathon I do sometimes get grumpy) he would even ride ahead and leave me alone. He is the best! But of course my favorite part is the finish! Thanks for reading! [This message has been edited by Ileneforward (edited May-21-2007).]

There were a few other things your DH was doing before he met you at mile 9 . Since my race didn't start for an hour, I offered to get the infamous "Avenue of the Giants" tent out my truck so you guys would have for your next camping trip. As we were pulling it out I found a bottle of tequila I had stashed away for Cinco de Mayo in the redwoods. Needless to say we decided to get an early start on the magaritas for the day. I guess time just got away from us before we realized my race started in 15 mins. and you were well on your way in the marathon and he had some serious catching up to you. I sure hope you didn't need anything in those first nine miles.

I like the first line of your report. "One of the best parts of racing is the chance to spend time with friends and family." You clearly had an enjoyable time, Ilene. Other boomers and your personal support crew are pretty neat. The pictures add a lot to an already great report. Congratulations.TomS ------------------ My Profile

Ilene, you seemed to have forgotten one thing in your race report...don't think I didn't recogonize that OTHER medal around your neck missy! Congrat's on the AG win, I went online today and saw that you placed, really happy for you.You deserve all the wonderful support from the hubby.. hey, does he have a brother?? Oh yeah, he does, but regrets he's already married! Oh well, perhaps cloning will become popular someday and we can all have the support of our SO in our endevors once we clone Mr.Forward. Super run lady, it isn't the easiest of courses and you tackled it with grace and fortitude. I had just arrived at the start of your race as the national anthem was being played, sorry I missed you - hope your day is going well today and your recovery is quick. Sherie

Congrats, Ilene! Love the photos. Now, must look up where in the heck is Palos Verdes. You are indeed a lucky woman to have your DH follow you along, supporting you. Judging by the breakfast he had, he was well-fueled. And, if that is an Americano I spy, he has good taste in coffee as well as boomer women.

ilene, you can run that's for sure but you can't hide. I talked to Stevie Ray this morning before the Capital City Marathon and it appears that his unprecedented-in-the-annals-of-marathon running with a PR in his 108th marathon and on one of the hilliest courses he could have chosen at the PV with you, you not only captured you first marathon AG hardware to go along with so many half-honors (I think, thanks Sherie), but you beat your Portland Marathon time where there was only one hill (vs at least six worse ones in PV) - that's a PR time anywhere else - but even he didn't know the best part, pictures by your biggest fan. now just keep Mr. Fast from running races anymore, as good as he is at running himself, he's way more valuable with the camera and supporting you in an incredible run. Hope you can do another marathon soon! ETA - oh, it's okay to make the photos as large as possible so we can see how beautiful you are, . . . I mean so we can read your finish time better. I am happy for you but not surprised at the AG award. You have been putting in the work and for that you get the reward with a good time and a medal. I have run every hill in PV and I don't think there is a level place there, so having a good race in that area is quite an achievement. Great fotos too; you look fresh as a daisy. That's the way to do it Ilene. Very nice job. Spareribs
