Belated Mother's Day Race Report: MOMs 5K

This race is really special to me. I began running just over 2 years ago, and this was the very first race I ever ran. Last year, I bettered my time a smidge, and I had been hoping to better it even further this year.

I was bolstered by an article that I read in Runner's World: Go Out Fast in Your Next 5K. This article suggested a different pacing strategy than is typically suggested: run your 1st mile 6% faster than your projected pace! The article discusses the results of a study examining this strategy among women, and this piqued my curiosity, because so many studies are performed among men only.

Armed with this pacing strategy, I made a few strategic changes. First of all, I knew that the first mile of this race was significantly uphill. So, rather than aiming for a time for that first mile that was so far and away faster than what I was aiming for, I targeted a certain amount of elevated effort.

So, how did it pan out? First off, let me tell you the day was gorgeous. Bright sunshine, blue skies, temp at 50 degrees, minimal wind. The past 2 of these that I ran were dismal, drizzly, and in the 40's, so this already boosted my mood!

I met up with Kirsten (La Tortuga) before the race, which was terrific. In fact, we met up right at the starting line, and the starting horn went off far too quickly, because, really, we were just getting absorbed in our conversation. Alas, we had some running to do.

Some pictures my DH took at the start (I amin the orange stripey tank and the orange running cap)

So, I really, really wanted to run a sub-23 minute 5K, and according to the Runner's World plan, that meant 7:10 for the first mile. But that was a bit of a stretch for a resoundingly uphill first mile. I focused on a more concentrated effort than I would normally put forth, though, and clocked in at 7:22. I definitely felt the effects, though!

The next mile was an even downhill, and I relaxed into it, clocking in 7:06 for the 2nd mile. The 3rd mile was rough, and I had to talk to myself sternly on several occasions to prevent myself from slowing to a walk. Nonetheless, I logged 7:43. The last 0.1 mile felt strangely great as I picked up some steam heading for the finish line.

(Now, for those of you eagle-eye observers, YES, my running skirt DID have built-in spankies, I don't know WHY that picture looks like some Britney Spears up-skirt shot. AND, that fellow pouring water over his head is dangerously close to doing a cool-down run backwards on the course a la Ribs)

Anywhoo...22:55! A 48-second PR! That makes PRs in a marathon, a 10K and a 5K all in the same month. I'm starting to get spoiled here. I must say that the Runner's World 5K racing strategy worked for me, most likely because I've been overly conservative in my pacing in the past. It was a great lesson!

Stats:
Finish: 22:55 (7:23 pace)
58/187 overall
3/14 Age Group

Fashion Report:
Orange striped "Running Girl" Sugoi tank, Boston Marathon special Triks running skirt, orange running cap, Neutrogena Moisture Lip Balm in "Glow"

Oh, yes, 2 more things. I must add that in the short time we had for socializing, Kirsten and I hatched a plan to try some trail running. Of course, we were delighted that the first step toward this goal meant shopping for some trail running shoes and accessories. Expect some great reports on this in the future, once she returns from Taiwan!

Finally, this race is a GEM, and it was one of the things that really prompted me to realize, 2 years ago, that running ROCKED. The party afterwards serves up Redbones barbecue and beers! At 10:30 AM, on a Mother's Day Sunday...Mmmmm! It doesn't get better than that!

Congrats Robin! Pacing in a 5K is tough as it is such a short amount of time. When you throw a good hill in, its even tougher. You're on fire with all those PRs!

Nice report as always...love the pics. At first I thought that guy was losing his cookies :-P

Gorgeous pictures, but why none of La Tortuga too?
Thanks for another outstanding report. You are on a hugh roll! A PR in every distance you run, all in one month? Your running talent is enormous. Congratulations on the hardware as well.

DH was manning the camera, and he didn't know who she was until after the race, when he was too busy baby-wrangling to take any more pictures. I still blame him, though!

What a great day, Robin. A special race, a nice day, a big PR, meeting with another boomer, and beer and barbeque. Congratulations.

Wow, Robin! What a great achievement to go along with your other May achievements. Hey, you've got one weekend left to go for a 4-bagger in PRs. Any half-Ms scheduled in your area?

I have to say that you look and run like one stylish and fast runner. Keep it up!

That's a wonderful RR Robin. I love the stories about Boomers getting together as well as stories about new PRs.

Great job, Robin!

I didn't realize you had been running such a short time. Sounds like you have lots of PRs in your future. Good luck at Covered Bridges!

Fun RR.

Determining a strategy for a race is part of the fun in running them. You certainly nailed the plan AND was able to use it for a great PR.

Thanks for the report, complete with pictures. You look to have passed all fashion standards set for the BBB (Boomers and Beyond Beauties)

CONGRATULATIONS

Terrific run Robin, and PR too! I'm impressed with your running form (3rd pic) ...slight lean, head/arms up ...good enough for a magazine shot I would think! (or get DH to frame!)
I have to wait for SR's fashion comment though ...personally, I thought your fashion looked great, but what do I know?

Hey Robin,

So, 3rd in AG. Did you get hardware, then? I didn't see it mentioned. Congrats on all your accomplishments!

By the way, any chance you would run the NYC Marathon? It's getting close to the deadline, and I'm still trying to decide whether to sign up for the lottery or just plan on a different race.

Go back to the pics and look at the last one and see that trailing leg and how high the lower leg is, parallel to the ground. This is a huge indicator of form. I recall Arthur Lydiard commenting on Carl Lewis and how his trailing foot would hit him in the butt. When the knees can come up, that rear leg can return high, and it is the mark of an efficient runner. I am glad to see you running this well Robin. And I think you are just getting into this, with more great results to come. Well done. Spareribs

Nice report and a fashio report was well deserved - Robin is a movie star!!!

Ilene - I am right behind RT's wave in photo #1 - the rest of the race - well she was a bit ahead of me. It was nice that you were able to capture all three trees alon the route in the photos - it makes the route appear a little less - well - urban?

Robin - we are so going trail running. Did you read Dale's race report?
