This was my 3 rd since Boston and first w/o my daughter. It was the inaugural running of this race for the to support the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and is sponsored by the Breakneck Track Club, as I found out a bunch of fast young people. Fast Stats: 39:55 49/86 O/A 1/1 AG so, I now hold the record for the fastest 60/99 for this race . . . Oh, and also the slowestThe course is about 25 minutes from my house but I have never been to that area before and was totally unfamiliar with the course, which I was rather hilly . . . all hilly some steep and shorter and one long and not so steep but they all took my breath away. It was obvious at the start that the organizers were a little disorganized, overheard them asking each other if they remembered to close the road all the way . . . hate to have the race end early etc. tuned them out it would either work out or it wouldn't. It worked out. We were off after 200 yds made a left onto breakneck road down a hill up a hill down a hill after a mile and a half turned around. The field was pretty spread out but there was a woman and an older man in front of me and then another older guy passed me, I would keep my eyes on the old farts in case they were in my age group, i'm not really competitive though . . . just seeing how well they were doing is all . . . HA. We were just cruising along and caught up to another older gentleman who started walking on the uphill. At the water stop the woman stopped and walked and shortly thereafter, I passed the two guys on the uphill ( I really hadn't planned on pushing this race, it was supposed to be a Tempo type run but now I feel obligated to push it the last two miles just for the sake of friendly competition). Shortly thereafter just before the turnaround on this long uphill a younger woman passes me. She just cruised on by, after the turnaround on the downhill I go by her and we exchange a few words, she said "you are making me look bad with that sprint" I said "don't worry we aren't in the same age group" she laughed. I moved on at the bottom of this downhill there was another steeper but short hill about 300 yards and then a left turn and about 200 yards to the finish. I am thinking I need to stay strong, don't want to let the older guys catch me. On the uphill I hear someone closing fast it is the younger lady swooshing by . . . I definitely need to work on those uphills. Left to the finish and do an unreasonable facsimile of a sprint and cross the line in 39:55. PS. none of the older guys were in my age group all were younger, one was close 59 but the others were in their 40's. One of the guys thanked me afterwards for pacing him in. A fun and challenging race and for a good cause. Nice race, mrpat. I can see that you were with a fast group. I can relate to finding out that "old" people are younger than you. It's sort of scary. Congrats on the fast race and AG win.TomS ------------------ My Profile

That was a great finish time, mrpat. And that picture is scary, that was a very hilly course. I understand completely your non-competitive urge to just stay ahead of those other runners. Good job! Congratulations on the AG win and course record!

You got some hillwork in during this race, mrpat. Nothing like other old farts to spark the competitive juices... Congratulations on a nice win. cj

Mr. Pat - An AG win is still an AG win. Well done, you record-setter, you! And hey, you still have my 5-mile PR beat, so I think you're pretty darn fast. Great job on your "tempo" run... ------------------ Holly

Great job Mr Pat, and yes indeed that does look like one killer of a hill. Your AG award is still something to be proud of, although I like your humor...hmmm...the fastest time and the slowest time in your AG on that course that is a pretty cool distinction to have!Congratultaions again and savor this one! ------------------ My User Profile "Keep on Running" Bob

PJ my AG is 60 to 64 so that who i was looking out for, the others were just collateral damage . . . but it is nice to be able to pass some of the younger folk though. Holly, I am sure that in the very near future you will get much faster and surpass my PR's . . . but i can live with that. Oh, and the 1st AG prize was a $20 GC at a local running store, which I will spend this week.

mrpat, I didn't know you and I are in the same AG. You are really running well. And I hope you don't sell yourself short on the win. You were the one who got up that day to race. And I am sure you beat many people younger than you, as you well know. A win is a win. Also consider the times we run in a race and everyone in our group runs a fantastic race! We end up in 5th place with a PR for example! Take the win, savor the victory. You are a fine runner. Spareribs
