Awoke at 4am all excited and nervous, forced myself to pretend to sleep another hour, then hit the road to...Lebanon.Lebanon's a nice place; a smallish logging town that the new economy forgot. Yeah, well, enough travelogue, I was here to claim my 4-foot trophy. The 500y swim went OK. Thank goodness there are ropes; else I would have been all over the pool. My goggles filled up with water and I was swimming blind. Finding the wall at the end of each length was an adventure..."I think it's about here, nope, a bit further..." This time, at the end of the 10 laps, I shot out of the pool like a penguin (not a walrus, thank you), sprang up and started sprinting out of the pool. Everyone else seemed to be walking. What's wrong with you people? After exiting the pool some kids were in my way and I hesitated not one second; just pushed them out of my way as I barrelled through to the transition area (I could hear their mom saying "boys, get out of the way...oh dear!"). The bike ride was great -- after the half hour it took me to get my compression shirt on. But I made up the time by being very aerodynamic. Some gray-haired lady on a road bike beat me, but I passed several road bikes and mountain bikes, so I knew I was doing fine. So, this was a 12.5 mile ride; a simple out and back. The turnaround was shortly after the 5 mile mark. Econo: This is the turn? Guy at turnaround: Yes, this is the turnaround! Econo: Really? Guy: Yes, you're halfway there! Econo: Naw! I wanted to stay and argue, but decided to humor the nice man and return to base camp. Vroommmmm! At the 2nd transition, I took off my helmet, crossed my hands in front of me, peeled off my black compression shirt in one smooth move, shook my long reddish-brown hair out and slipped on my new shades (OK somebody slap me), and took off running. I think I ran the 5K well, despite lead legs. The miles weren't marked and I ran hard, thinking I was almost finished when in fact, I had quite a distance to go. Unlike LRR, my results aren't in yet...it'll be a few days probably. BUT! My children-shoving technique apparently paid off. I earned a red ribbon for 2nd place in my AG (out of at least 3!) in the mountain bike division. And a random prize -- a t-shirt from a swim meet in 2002. Now I'm hungry for an apple fritter.... I am sorry to be largely AWOL from CR these weeks (until late June or so) due to workload demands and feel kind of guilty for posting this RR during my absence. Don't worry; no children were harmed in the running of this triathlon. ------------------ Live Music is Best Econo

Great report. That is a great job. Maybe pushing kids out of the way will become the 4th event at these things. You KNOW we like to hear your report, and will always welcome any input you give here. I hope the work demands will soon lighten up enough for you to participate more. Thanks for sharing this with us and Congratulations ------------------ vista129

OK you... I will complete my "Toddler Tri" in a couple of hours. Whining all the way, in the rain. We will compare notes (we'll adjust numbers somehow). Then we'll see.But something I will not be able to equal is the sense of wonder and enjoyment that leaks through in your reports. AG hardware aside, you are having fun out there. Even if it was in perfectly gorgeous weather. Great job getting past the goggles, the kids, the turn around guy, and that receding finish line! Nicely done. Back to you later, -cAigr

Econo, great RR. You make tri's sound like so much fun! Ripping clothes off, shoving little kids around, arguing with guys.... And you placed in your AG. Fantastic! ------------------ Running in wellness Liz Lizs Profile

Econo tri-babe you have more fun at these events than a gang of penguins in a pickled herring factory. Great job! and congrats on your AG hardware errr software(t-shirt)? I can see a big tri in Kona in your future (three cups of kona coffee can't be that hard to find in Portland) and a spot on Wide World of Sports (is that still on??). Thanks for sharing the day, cfli

You've been missed Econo. Tris will test ya and it seems you've done well. We can tell you are all fired up when you wrote your RR. Sweet. Aren't there leash laws for kids in your area??? Waiting for race results are not easy. Thanks for sharing your event.------------------ Never regret anything that made you smile, SteveP My User Profile

Great job, Econo! You are really achieving a lot lately, and a triathlon -- regardless of distances -- is a hugh deal. As I said in another tri RR, I can see myself in a duathlon someday, but there's no chance of my trying to even go 500 yards in the water! And getting AG hardware is always nice, too. By the way, I think that the goddesses around here should refrain from RRs wherein they mention things having to do with "peeling off clothing". This is very hard on those of us who tend to have active fantasy-lives. All the best to you while you are off on sabbatical from B&B. We'll await your return anxiously. ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Econo!Hooray for the most glorious tri-grrrl here at boomers. The zippy swimming (even blind) the penguin manuver, the clothing obstacles, all of it hilarious, glamorous, and unbeatable! Your report will have me giggling all day. Congratulations on hardware (t-shirt, but still symbolically hardware) and enjoy that apple fritter, in fact have two!
