Short version – met up with Robin
The weather was fantastic
Time = 25:20?

Long version – for me this is a poignant race. The director is a local hero and lovely person. He has dedicated this race to his mother who died 5-years ago from cancer. She was a patient in a unit where I started my nursing career, my friends were her nurses. When I started my nursing career I chose oncology. My experience had been with oncology patients who decided lived beyond their diagnosis. Many took life by the shoulders, looked at it in the eye and said “I can do this.” We all know from Ms Munch that this is not an easy attitude to take, but can be so rewarding. I also reflect back on my years as a young woman dealing with death and dying issues as many of my friends were off experiencing a more light-hearted existence. Looking back at a 22 year old novice and the following 18 years spend in the field, those years shaped me into the person I am today.

Oh yeah – the race was lovely. The first mile had some hills (have I told you all that I love hills). It is a very urban course, but starts and ends blocks from my house.

Mile 1: 8:07
Mile 2: 8:04
Mile 3.1: 9.09

Thank you for this introspective RR, La Conejita!

(My favorite clinical rotation in college was oncology because the nurses were the most skilled and most compassionate... I didn't go into oncology because my venipuncture skills are so poor. I wish I would have had better skills)

Congratulations on a FABULOUS five K! Golly, you are going to break 25 next time around. I am so happy that you are running so well.

Your friend,
~ rose

La T.
Thanks for the report and some personal background. My DD is in her 3rd year of 4 in her nursing program and A&M CC. She has been doing her clinicals rotating each semester in different hospitals. She has known since early middle school she wanted to be a nurse and will likely end up in with the babies. Oh and good race too!

The race experience was so much a part of your vision of who you are and helping others, that I got more caught up in that than in the race results, but I am glad you did this and shared it with us. And of course to get to run with Robin! Spareribs

Thanks for sharing! Life is a journey, isn't it, especially when we look back at where you've come from and what's really "shaped" us.

The coordinator of our running group has the same mantra - "I love hills". I remember the first year I joined the group ... he made us say this as we entered a hilly part of our training runs. Will always remember that.

LaT -- the nurses who worked with my mother were a special breed. I always appreciated their approach with her and us. I admire, not only your obvious running skills, but also your chosen profession.
I need to find some hills to love ... cj

Nice report with a reflective and poignant message.

I work in healthcare recruiting and it is interesting for me to note the different personalities that fit into the various areas of nursing. When I am interviewing candidates I ask what got them into their area of medicine and usually can see similarities for those involved in certain areas. Oncology is one of those that this is true of.

Congratulations on a great day and thanks for sharing.

I have added this AFTER Millbot and the ProFromDover but...

All of my clients are nurses !!!!

Hi LaT!

Would have been nice to get out your way. But I would have had to ignore DWandmom. Not smart.

But hey! Good race! And a good race to go to.

congrats on a nice run la t. hopefully running helps while you deal with the daily heavy-dutiness in that nursing job. it's always fun to run more meaningful races, and it's also nice that you hooked up with rtravers.

ps - now i know why you were so good nursing that post-boston beer...

La T,

You're fast! Thanks for sharing how meaningful the race was. Mother's Day can get very Hallmarkish. Nice to see events like this race that celebrate moms in a wonderful way. Sheesh and you knit too.

I just love my oncology nurses...they are always so smiley and positive. Yesterday (Tuesday) I noticed a young woman in the waiting room at my oncologist's office. She had "the look" on her face so I decided to speak to her. She was there for her pre-chemo meeting to get all the how-to's and don'ts. I assured her she would be very well cared for and would get through this. My daughter is an RN and I'm waiting for her to decide she want's to work in Oncology. Right now she is working in Endoscopy.

Do you also do the Komen RFTC?

Very meaningful run.

And a lot of nurses or nurse lovers on this board.

My DD was sure she wanted to do onocology as a nursing career but somehow she got swept in by those beautiful little premature babies in the NICU.

Thank you all for the thoughtful replies. It was very nice to meet up with Robin.

Rose and Vista - thanks for your thoughts on future nursing careers!

pmcneb - NICU is just an amazing world - my cousin works there and has for about 20 years now!

Munch - I am looking into an "Against the Tide" swim later in the summer, to benefit Breast Cancer and plan to get Pro to sign up as well.

mc - funny!

nowor - yeah - knitting. What can I say?

LaT – thanks for the insight into your life. Nursing is much more than a career, it’s a calling. Great race and report.
