This is one of my favorite local races because of the music they play, standards from the 40s & 50s, including the event's signature song, "You Gotta Have Heart." At race time, 11am, it was sunny, 64F, 40% humidity with a 10mph breeze. The course is relatively flat with a steep 1/4 mile downhill at mile 4.25, and an equally step 1/4 mile uphill at 4.75. Last year I ran a 58:12 here, and my 10K PR was 58:06. I felt I was in better shape this year, so Goal 1 was to beat 58 min, Goal 2 to beat 57 min. Fashion Break: (Why this is req'd I don't know; I'm just following orders.) Black NB shorts, blue/grey Champion singlet, NB 766 (I love these shoes.), red terry headband, cheap, but comfy, wraparound shades, Timex Ironman GPS, Creative MuVo mp3 player. The Race: I missed the mile 1 marker, so I was surprised and pleased to hit mile 2 in 17:23, a full min ahead of my Goal 2 (57 min) pace. I felt I must be at near-LT pace judging by my breathing - labored , but not gasping, but that I might be able to hold this pace aal the way, except for the uphill. Miles 3 & 4 I averaged about 8:45. Then I flew on the downhill, but struggled alot on the uphill (Note to self: more hill workouts!) In the end they seemed to balance out, as mile 5 was 8:52, just 5 sec above my avg pace for the full 10K. Mile 6 was the slowest one (9:06) as I recovered from the climb, but I finished strong, sprinting for the finish trying to beat the clock to 55:00. I missed it by 5 sec, but I'm pretty darned pleased as this 55:05 beats my previous PR by 3:01. Special thanks to DJ Steveboy whose mixes, especially 180 bpm Jackhammer, kept my cadence steady throughout the race. Splits: 8:52, 8:31, 8:38, 8:56, 8:52, 9:06, 2:12 I am a very happy camper! Steve

That's one heck of a PR. When the odds are sayin' you'll never win, that's when the grin should start, cause ya gotta have heart. As to the steady pace you ran, it's fine to be a genius of course, but keep that old horse before the cart, cause ya gotta have heart. Given the extent of your PR, I am confident you will now run some faster tenK's. You gotta have hope. Mustn't sit around and mope. Spareribs
