Well this was a race that almost wasn’t for me. My wife and I have been increasingly concerned about my mother in-laws health as she has been very confused lately and her blood pressure has been way out of sorts and she has been dizzy & weak etc. As I was gathering my things for the Hot Pursuit 5K my wife went to check on my mother in-law (we built an in-law apartment for her with a private entrance, full bath and laundry etc.) and a short time later she called for me and I knew the tone in her voice was one of extreme concern. When I went downstairs I found my wife assisting her mother from the bathroom to the dining room so that she could sit. She was unable to get up off the john herself and she was obviously in a state of distress.Well to make a very long story short, we ended up taking my mother in-law to the hospital where it was determined that she was dehydrated, and she possibly has a urinary tract infection and they are keeping her for further testing on her kidneys to see if there might be a problem there since they are still having a difficult time regulating her blood pressure. Oh and I forgot to mention she does have diabetes which is controlled by her diet (which we don’t think has been very good of late). So I finally ended up leaving the hospital at about 1:00 this morning and I got home at about 1:20 and was in bed by 1:30! I woke up with a start at 5:26 thinking I was going to be late for something, who knows what. I quickly jumped in the shower and was scrubbing down before I realized that I could have slept for another hour or so. Well too late for that now, I was wide awake now so I finished showering got dressed and had my typical pre-race breakfast of two cookies and cream pop tarts, a banana, a glass of OJ and a glass of chocolate milk. After eating breakfast I tinkered around the house for a bit and read the paper and headed out for Brunswick at about 7:15. I got to Brunswick at about 8:30 and picked up my race packet and headed out for a pre-race warm up run of the course. Temp was 47 degrees and a bit breezy. 3.1 miles – 26:59 – (8:42) – 8:48, 8:37, 8:45, :48 After my warm up I discarded my running pants and wind jacket and had on my orange w/black stripes Adidas 2007 Boston Marathon SS Tech Shirt and Black with orange stripes Adidas 2007 Boston Marathon, my Asics 2110 running shoes and my Garmin 305 & heart monitor. I have to admit that I was a bit nervous about this run. I had felt all along that I had a sub 20 in me but just wasn’t sure what to expect so early in the season with little speed work up until now. Since this was such a small race I lined up right at the front of the pack and waited for the stating “siren”. Once we were off I noticed about 7 or 8 runners several of whom I recognized burst right out of the gate in a flurry and I knew I didn’t want to try to stay with them so I tried to rein it in a little. I felt great and ended up settling in a few steps behind a younger female runner that seemed to be going at my pace. We passed mile marker one in 6:11 that was a bit fast so I knew I had to rein it in even more and concentrated on that, just thinking 6:26 pace Bob that is all you need. No change with the runners as I had settled right in at the number 10 spot and was very comfortable there. As we approached mile marker two we passed a water table and the young girl ahead of me slowed to take a cup and put it over her head at which time I promptly passed her as she slowed a bit. Mile marker two went by in 6:24 and I was feeling pretty good. I think I had actually moved up to the number 8 position and could feel someone just over my left shoulder as we ran through the third mile. This guy passed me just before the third mile marker and I lost my focus for a bit (DAMN) ok pull it together I told myself as I saw Mile marker three go by 6:32 and I dug down deep and pushed the final tenth with a bit of a kick at the end in :35. Official Results 9/248 OA 1st Law Enforcement Finisher which of course me gave me my 1st in Age Group for Law Enforcement so I was of course pretty happy with that. But most of all 19:43 a small 7 second PR but a PR none the less. If this hadn’t worked out there was no way I was going to mention my mother in-law because I didn’t want it to sound like an excuse for a sub par performance. However, my family comes first and if this race hadn’t worked out, well there will always be others. Well my legs are tired, I’m hungry and my wife and I are pretty tired overall so were are going to calling it an earlynight!

Nice race, PR, and RR, Bob!Sorry to hear about MIL. Hope the hospital stay gets here back on track. Excellent time in your 5k. I just broke 22:00 and will be trying to inch towards 20:00 but I am well aware of the work to shave seconds of PR's. Keep runnin and racein' Fran

Hey Bob, great report and great finish. It was a decent course and even though it was flat, I was glad to have done some long/slow hillwork this week. I could literally feel the difference. I was way behind you, by lots, but I did run 50seconds faster than I did last weekend, so it's all good. I hope your MIL improves.. Peace! fretless [This message has been edited by fretless (edited May-06-2007).]

Sorry to hear about your MIL, Bob. My best wishes for her improvement!Your warmup would have been a PR for me a few years ago, and your race time was great -- especially with the AG award and a PR to boot. Way to go! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Super run, Bob.I've believed all along that you would do very well at this distance. I'm virtually certain that your times will be coming down a lot more before you are through. Without any change in your conditoning I think you could have run 8-10 seconds faster today with better pacing. Keep up the good work, Jim

I privately thought it was too soon for a sub-20, but this is evidence that you are very tough right now and that you can look forward to even faster times now, as Jim has mentioned above. I don't think there is any question of it now.I am also sorry about your mother in law and hope she is better soon. You have your priorities right of course. Well done Bob. Spareribs

Very well done, Bob, especially after the short night's sleep and the worries about your MIL. (Note to self: eat cookies and cream pop tarts before next race.) Running healthy is a gift, isn't it? Congratulations on your PR and best wishes to your family.

Bob, I'll let others egg you on talking about faster times. I will stick to congratulating you on your sub-20 time. That is such a nice-sounding milestone. Especially impressive since you've focused a lot of your effort recently on building endurance. And sweet coming so soon after Boston. Bask in your PR glow. And best wishes to your MIL.
