750m swim, ugh 12.5 (20K) bike, vrooom! 5K run, slugathon3rd in AG (out of ???), mountain bike division Long Version: Took my mountain bike to the shop Thurs for a tune-up and asked the guy to fill the tires extra because I'm doing my first tri. So when I went to pick up the bike, I said "so, did you fill the tires up good?" He says "80 psi. 65 is max." heh heh. I have my fancy trisuit, and my bike with tires ready to explode. Yeah baby! Drove up to Albany, fretted and fussed with my gear... Time to swim -- 3 in a lane. 750m is long for a sprint triathlon (500 is normal), so I wasn't in my zone here. I did my best, but I am built like T-rex. I suk in the pool. And then I couldn't get OUT of the pool! I was in the shallow end, but couldn't seem to heave myself up & out! I managed to get one arm & one leg up and sort of roll up onto the deck like a walrus. It was pathetic! Then I stood up and ran, to the thundering applause of maybe 30 people on the pool bleachers. Transition 1 very fast: Just put shoes & socks on, jacket, belt with bib, eat a Gu (HI SPARERIBS), guzzle gatorade, put helmet, sunglasses on and whoosh! Biking went well. I passed 3 people on mountain bikes. Some guy on a road bike passed me. Grrrr. I kept him in sight, though... I kept saying to myself, "Go, go! You are built for this! This is what you're good at!" (zero training, by the way....last week I took the bike out to memorize how to work the gears, heehee) Problem: It was windy. My voluminous biking commuter jacket was flapping in the wind like the sails on a sailboat. Gaahhh! Note to self: LS underarmour next time, not a jacket. Saw my dad, Papa Econo at Transition 2, which was meteoric; got rid of the bike, helmet, jacket and took off....crawling. Oy, my legs wouldn't go! Numb, almost, and shin-splinty. I didn't get my sealegs back until the third mile, and by then I felt like mile 12 of a half marathon. Yuck! Even though I was creeping along, I passed 3 people, who were, astonishingly, running even slower than I was. I almost caught that road bike guy in the end. Admittedly, I didn't push much in the last mile of the 5K. I think I just wanted to cruise in at that point. Papa Econo was there to give me a hug and an "attagirl." I yelped when I got 3rd place in my AG and a nice white ribbon. I don't know my times for the individual events and am eager to find out. This could be a fun new hobby... Fashion report: most details above. Hair in a barrette smushed up into a lycra swim cap. Nike zoom miler shoes for both bike & run. TYR black trisuit with lavender/white/blue trim -- a lifesaver in the transition phase -- it's a combo swimsuit, bikeshorts, running suit, so no need to change...nice. ok - I'm thoroughly impressed!!! Way to go on your first Tri. Now you know more of what to expect in subsequent tri's and I would say that in taking 3rd in your AG on your very first time out is indicative that this does a good job at matching your athletic abilities. You done job!!------------------ Tamaskirtalina

AWESOME GRETA JOB an AG group prize, and a PR to boot! That second chin up will do wonders for getting out of the pool, but after the swim your arms were probably rubber. How long before you get that road bike? Congrats!

You go, Econo! I've been waiting to hear about this event, and I guess you are now officially a Tri-Goddess. Sounds like you had fun and now know what to expect the next time. I think that the transition from biking to running is something that is always difficult on your legs.------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Yipee! Econo, that is terrific!!! Really fun to read, too! Laughed out loud at your thought processes when that road bike guy had the audacity to pass you. Of all the nerve! Next time at the awards ceremony, don't yelp, tho. Just look mildly surprised that you didn't take first. Of course, maybe you will..... cj

"built like a T Rex", what you talkin bout willis!!! What a cool report and what a great job you did and AG hardware to boot on a mountain bike!!!! Sometime I'll relate the story of my one and only tri with my mountain bike. You are awesome. If I wouldn't of drowned in the pool, I would of had bicycle seat rash so bad I couldn't of moved. Nice to hear papa Econo was there to cheer you on. Move over spareribs, cause I'm in love too. John

WTG Econo! Since ducks are nature's original triathletes (swim, run - er, waddle, and fly), it's no wonder you did so well. Congrats on the AG award.

Way to go Econo! I laughed about the walrus, that's just what would have happened to me. No, maybe not, because I never would have gotten in the pool in the first place. Congrats on the 3rd, an awesome job for your first time. I'm impressed.Mrs. Ribs
