I ran this race last year and, since I sort of know the race director, Ann, I thought I would show up and support her and her cause, St. James school. When I arrived, Ann was concerned as she only had 19 pre registered for the run and walk where last year she had 65. She attributed this to an inaugural race in nearby Midland in conjunction with their new minor league baseball team. One big drawing point for that race was a ticket to one of their games for each race participant. Later, I heard they had 800 runners. Gray Dave reported on his participation in the daily thread. It sounds like a good race.

Back to my race. I did not see as many people I knew as I thought I would but the race ended up having within one or two of last year's total so that was good for Ann and her cause. I saw my friends Brian (with his wife who walked) and Terry as well as a few others I know. I was especially happy to see Garrett, a speedy 20 something that I haven't seen in quite a while. The day was delightful, probably mid 50s to 60 at the start and warmed a bit but not unpleasantly so during the race, almost calm, and sunny. The course is mostly on a paved path along the Saginaw River and included a wooden bridge out to an island. My race was ok but nothing special. My GPS gave me a time of 26:01 for a pace of 8:22. The pace splits for each mile and the last tenth were 8;10, 8:34, 8:24, and 7:59. I obviously wasn't too consistent but was able to kick a bit for the last tenth. I finished 28/59 OA and 2/5 in my AG (60-69). There must have been a lot of casual runners there to support the cause as I rarely finish in the top half. Terry and Brian ran well, both far in front of me. Garret was up among the leaders as usual.

Even though my race was so so, seeing some friends and running a nice course on a beautiful day made it all worthwhile.

tselbs, your ending comment says it all!

I wonder if all of us can make a pledge to run in a tiny, underfunded charity run this year... How about it, folks?

Yes, the difficulties of the duelling charity races. Good to hear Ann came close to last year's numbers.

2nd place for a "so-so" run on a beautiful day with friends ... not so bad. I'd be happy to have some of those warmer temps here, Tom.

Congratulations on the AG placing.

Hi Tom - Nice of you to run the Bay City race. The Loon race raised money for the high school track programs in Midland. Not quite as good a cause as yours, but with only 2-3 races all year in Midland, I had to do the local one.

The game ticket by the way was for "lawn seating". If everyone shows up tonight that got a free ticket, I don't think they would have enough lawn for us all.

Sounds like a gorgeous day, and running with friends too. Tom, I hope you don't mind if I give you some "expert" advice on RR's. When you finish 2nd in your age group, be very vague about how many people were in it! (As if you would mislead anyone; just kidding.)

Very well done, and as you say, a bit of kick at the end. A great day as you would say. Well done. Spareribs

Good report, race, and purpose Mr. Tom. We can go months in C.C. without any races locally or within driving distance and then several weekends 2 or more. Trouble deciding which to support. Glad you had a good day.

Thanks for the report, Tom!

What a great report Tom. You reminded me why I always have the most fun at smaller races.

It's very comendable for you to help out your friend the race director. I'm glad for her the race ended up turning out okay.

Nice AG place!

Nice race. You had a good time and placed in your age group. Doesn't get much better than that, huh? Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great job Tom 2nd ag I'd take that every week. Post a note the next time you got a local race especially small ones in your area. I did look at the Loons run as well, and the 15k in Flushing but OT last week forced me to just do long training run instead, I was done before the races started and then went home and went to bed.

Hi TomS,

How good of you to continue to support Ann's race and her fund-raising efforts. I'm sure your presence there was meaningful to her.

Congratulations on a good day, a strong finish, finishing in the top half, and very nice AG placement. Not bad for a "so-so" race!

As always, you found friends with whom to enjoy the day, and you took the time to notice the beauty of the course. Thanks for your reminders that having a good race is often about more than staying focused on the blacktop between the start and finish lines.

I must have missed seeing this earlier. Sounds like a good run though, Tom, and if you had some fun while supporting a good cause, what else can anyone ask for? Keep up the good work (and good RRs).
