My DW, MIL and granddaughter, Brooke,.drove up to Boston on Thursday. we had Brook with us because my daughter had another baby on april 1st and there were some complications. This was a change from last year when we stayed in downtown Boston. and I was a little concerned about getting to the buses on time Monday morning. Went to the expo saturday morning, it was very crowded. Brooke liked sampling all of the free samples. We had dinner at a small Thai place in Somerville. Had a good time at Henry and marj's brunch. It was great to meet up with the boomers. Can't wait for the the pictures to be posted.SS, I took 2 of the Naniamo Bars and reluctanty shared them with my family. hey were a lot better than the ones i made. Could you post your recipe? My race didn't go as well as i had hoped. I wanted to at least break 4 hours and my training was better than for my other 2 marathons. I am not sure what went wrong. I felt OK for the first 18 or so miles but then the hills just wore me out and by the time I got to Pro's water hole I was completely worn out. I really appreciated the bottle of gatorade that dr dale gave me but it didn't provide the lift that I had hoped for. I walked and ran slowly the next 5 miles. I did manage to run the last 1.2 miles and actually felt much better as I neared the finish line. I was very sore afterwards and had cramping in my calves, shins and hamstring. the next day I felt pretty good and had no problem driving home. Time 4:17:29 about 2m 30s faster than last year but still with a lot of room for improvement. My heartrate was 10 points higher than I wanted, averaged 154 from mile 2 to 20. i think i need to incorporate more hills into my workouts.

On a better day, you'd have broken 4 hours to be sure! Bravo for beating last year's pace under tough conditions!Granted, the weather lightened up at the start of the race, but those days and hours of meteorologist-induced anxiety can take their toll. The conditions out there were not conducive to having a relaxed morning or a good warm-up. A better day and we all could have nicked a few seconds per mile off of our time! Will we see you next year on those hills? --Robin

It was greta to meet you MrPat and wish I could have met the rest of your family. I agree with Robin, I was stressed about the weather and I wasn't even running in it. Glad to hear that you have no residual soreness and you can come back and do better next time.Barb

Hi Pat,Don't be bummed - you beat last year's time by over 2 minutes, even with a very tough last 5 miles! There is always room for improvement, however the key is to stay motivated to improve. It sounds to me like you are there, so I'm already looking forward to your Boston '08 report! I hope your daughter is doing OK - congrats to her on the birth of her new daughter. Jay

Sorry to hear that this didn't work out as you planned, mrpat, but at least you stuck it out and didn't end up with a DNF. Just think of all those who never get to run Boston at all, and you'll see just how much you've accomplished. So now that I've made you feel better --- Get out there and run some more hills!! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Boston seems to be one of those races with wild swings in performance. Sometimes you have a great one and sometimes you don't. The gap between my best and worst is one hour and fifteen minutes! You'll be back. Spareribs

MrPat,What a pleasure to talk to you at the brunch. Sorry conditions were not great but you exemplify "being in it for the long run." Great preparation, the ablility to combine running w/ life events, and finishing while feeling carpy. Looking forward to watching you run Boston again...sometimes we have better weather.

mrpat,Hey, you beat last year's time, and you have the additional consolation of knowing there's a faster marathon in you, on a better day. These things happen, and you have to grab the silver lining. I had a 5K a few years ago, when I expected to run a great time but simply failed to do so. At first I was greatly chagrined by my time, but eventually I reminded myself, "Well, it was a PR." Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

I have to agree with others, if you beat last years time under those less than ideal conditions, that's great. And next time, you'll get that sub-4!------------------ My Profile "I think I can, I think I can"

mrpat, it's been a very stressful time with your new granddaughter in hospital. This has probably had more affect on you than you realize.I know you're disappointed with your time. Still, 2 min 30 sec improvement over last year is just fine. Kudos to you for developing your next plan of attack. It will be my pleasure to pass on the recipe to you (don't tell the Battle of the Bulgers), but forgive me if it doesn't get posted until a bit later. I need a little walk in the trees this morning (after I respond to some of the new RRs). I'm sorry we were so tardy in arriving to the brunch. I would have liked to have spent more time with you. I do think of you every time I'm in the harbour city, looking at a beautiful little island to the east. [This message has been edited by Sans Souci (edited Apr-20-2007).]

Eat more Naniamo Bars. That will fix it. You did great Mr. Pat. yes, there will be a faster one, but there is always something to take away from every race you run. I hope all is well with your DD and grandchild. . . Well done, egret

Congratulations on a fine race under poor conditions. It was rainy and windy, not to mention all that you've had on your mind. Training that occurs for this race will help you later this year and next year too. It is all cumulative and doesn't 'go to waste'.I'm impressed with the improvement in your time compared to last year, too. Very nice race. Shrug off your disappointment-there's more to life than running and racing. You'll be back and doing great in a matter of weeks. Glad you got to meet a bunch of Boomers at the various places and I was happy to meet you briefly, too. Maybe next year we'll chat more? And remember, there's always room for improvement. Strong race. Again, congratulations.

Dude, you ran BOSTON. Sorry you're disapponted by your time, but please do be proud of the fantastic accomplishment of qualifying and running it. That alone makes at least one B&Ber think you're pretty darn inspiring and amazing - uh, that would be me. (Probably a bunch of folks agree with me, too.) Thanks for the inspiration and many greta runs for you in the future!

I think you ran a fabulous race. We were all afraid of what the day would bring and I think that worry sapped a lot of energy out of a great number of us. Anyone who tackled Boston this year should be proud.-Dove

MrPat -- this boomer thinks you did great! Hard to say why some days are better than others, so many things come into play. I wish you felt better about your race this year. Congratulations on your improvement over last year, even if it wasn't up to your expectations. Best wishes, cj
