Fantastic job, DH! I had not really paid enough attention to what you were planning to do, so the extent of this RR kind of caught me by surprise. Your next marathon should be a breeze compared to this one.------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

DH, you leave me speechless. What an outstanding race. Can we look forward to the newest running book by DH, how to run a marathon, the secret of the sofia taper?? Outstanding results and I do hope you are pampering yourself for the next couple of days, your body surely deserves it. ------------------ Running in wellness Liz Lizs Profile

Damn, DH - That was one heck of a run, and a breath-taking RR! You stayed as focused on the job at hand during your marathon as I'm sure you did during the mysterious (glorious?) Sophia Taper™. It also seems that your 'marathon finish' visualizations from your treadmill runs paid dividends at the end of your real marathon. Your performance is even more amazing considering that there were only 41 people in the race, and probably not too many (if any) spectators to cheer you on. Congrats on a great race, a sub-4 in your first marathon, and on the jacket, book, and medal that you've clearly earned. It's so cool that Sgt. Fortuna was able to arrange to get those awards for you all! Jay

Well done, Sgt Horse!Stand down, soldier. But seriously, Tim: I'm truly impressed by the effort and panache you put into the race, but what does the Army think about its NCOs doing such stupid ^h^h^h^h^h^h courageous things and risking spending the next few days unfit for service? Congratulations, and may you be able to walk down stairs normally very soon.

I'll just echo what everyone else has said. This is such an impressive result for you given that you had never run more than 14 miles before and your training has been spotty at best over the past few weeks. Must have been that Sophia Taper. Congrats on a great time and thanks for an awesome RR.Meg

Thank you, everyone, for all your nice comments. Let me respond to a few of your questions and comments. quote: Originally posted by mbelongia: Dare I ask how you're feeling?
Actually I feel fine today. I feel better than I did after running 13.2 the Sunday before last. Surprisingly, I ran 26.2 yesterday at a significantly faster pace than the 13.2. quote: Originally posted by lyndenrunner: it's actually quite amazing how close your splits are.
Not really. I think I ran the first two loops almost a minute per mile faster than the last two loops. But the last two loops were very close to each other: both within seconds of 1:00, with the fourth and final loop being slightly faster than the third loop. You could say I ran the first half of the race too fast, but if I hadn't been below 2:00 after two loops, I might not have had the confidence and motivation to try for sub-4:00. I might have ended up with 4:30 or something like that. quote: Originally posted by mrsribs: So will it be Boston in 2008?
I plan to be there. quote: Originally posted by Ileneforward: Get in an ice bath stat! Your legs will thank me tomorrow.
No ice baths here on the barracks. No baths at all: just showers. But my legs feel fine, really. quote: Originally posted by Tetsujin30: There’s not many runners stupid enough, . . . I mean gutsy enough to do it anymore and your impressive performance would be hard to believe except for your rr passing ilene's muster in the Intrepid links and there being a vaguely familiar ring about sharp gravel on the soles, careening off moguly downhills, and charging up the hills no matter what that would otherwise seem hard to make up.
I have no idea what Tetsujin just said, but thank you, I think. quote: Originally posted by jura: how is Dark Colt these days?
Better, I think. He is going to school these days, which he wasn't for a while. Dad leaving for a year and a half hit him hard. quote: Originally posted by WillRunForBeer: That is one heckova run, DH
Something you said a couple of weeks ago stuck in my head and motivated me throughout the race. You said, "I am looking forward to your race report. <evil grin>" I wanted to wipe that evil grin off your face. quote: Originally posted by predawnrunner: you did this just to impress me, didn't you?
Yes. Don't tell Beer Runner. quote: Originally posted by rbbmoose: Welcome to the marathon club...you're now as much of a runner as oprah!
Er ... thanks. quote: Originally posted by bigapplepie: No doubt the R&R helped numb the pain.
My theory is, if you are feeling no pain before the race, you will feel no pain during the race. quote: Originally posted by goofyguy1958: What was the drink of choice in your taper
Mavrud, a wine unique to Bulgaria, which is an ancient wine-growing region. quote: Originally posted by Coastwalker: probably not too many (if any) spectators to cheer you on.
There were some spectators to cheer us on. A bunch of female soldiers gathered at the top of one hill, and stayed there throughout the race, screaming like banshees whenever a runner appeared. The idea was to re-create the cheering Wellesley College girls. They did make a lot of noise. quote: Originally posted by MustangSally: what does the Army think about its NCOs doing such stupid ^h^h^h^h^h^h courageous things and risking spending the next few days unfit for service?
The Army was cautious about letting soldiers run in the race. I had to get my company commander to sign off on my participation. He was skeptical, even though I grossly exaggerated how much running I was doing. Sgt. Camargo wanted to run, too, but the company commander wouldn't let him. He asked Sgt. Camargo, "What's the longest run you've done?" Sgt. Camargo: "Four miles." Commander: "Get out of here. You're wasting my time." quote: Originally posted by MustangSally: may you be able to walk down stairs normally very soon.
I feel fine. No problems walking down stairs or doing anything else I would normally do. I may run again tomorrow. quote: Originally posted by runningindc: DH, you leave me speechless.

DH--- this boomer come lately also extends her amazement and respect, oh, okay, and jealousy, that you nailed your first marathon in under 4---Oprah may want to feature you in her magazine... or in O her home magazine "who can believe a barracks can be so stunning and utilitarian at the same time? And that use of khaki and camo....simply marvelous..." Bet she'll love that pleasure tent, or whatever you called it. (sorry folks if that's too racy). I have one concern: is pinning gus to your hips tantamount to wrapping your jacket around your waist? I sure hope you know who does not read that. gu is on his short hit list lately.you rock and you inspire me to meet you in Boston next year! glidegal p.s. i was thinking about dark colt yesterday--glad to hear he is better.

greetings from CBS!forgive the intrusion. i normally post in the CH. in fact i posted there about the A Co TFRD medic who ran the satelite marathon in 3:58. he also hadn't been doing any 'proper' distance training. after his 'virgin' results, then reading about yours we are all thinking of following your plans (or lack thereof). awesome job in not only finishing your first marathon but in breaking 4 hours! ps - seriously people: radar hill must be experienced to believe!
