Friday was a wonderful warm day but by Friday night, the clouds came in, the winds picked up, . . . so that could only mean one thing. . . LabDuck was in town.

Woke up 6 a.m. Saturday to get ready for the 8:30 a.m. Pear Blossom in Medford, Oregon. It rained pretty hard and steady through the night. And it wasn't letting up for the start. My office is only a few blocks from the start, so I popped in there to change clothes and stay out of the rain, then walked over to the start. My DH and DS came with me today to cheer their ol mom on. DH spotted John walking around as we were waiting for the start. I never did see Lab before we were off, but it was still raining, so I knew he was nearby.

I did pass Lab, or he passed me, on the out and back. He was looking good and strong and anxious to get finished so he could get out of the rain. Did he even realize at this point, that it was all his fault anyways?

I hit the 5 mile mark at 48:43 (might be off by a few seconds, but I think that is what my watch said). I was feeling real good and whenever I started getting annoyed by the rain pelting me in the ear or accidentally stepping in a puddle, I just kept my focus on all the boomers heading for Boston and thought how thankful they would be this Oregon rain, compared to east coast heavy duty rain.

I was planning on walking just a minute at the turn around. Last year, mile 5 is where the ITBS kicked in real bad and gave me so many problems for the remainder of the race. But I felt strong and I felt sproinky, so I kept going.

As I turned the corner and saw the finish line, I heard John and Lab yell out my name. What a couple of great guys - standing out there in the rain to cheer me on!

I passed the finish at 1:37:xx (can't remember the seconds, but I do believe I had a negative split by about 30 seconds or so.).

This was a bit slower than I was hoping for. I was aiming for under 1:35, but I kept telling myself it's just a training run and I wanted to be strong for The Avenue. I still felt so good at the end of this run, like I could have run a few more. So I think my Half Marathon Debut will be a good one for me.

Afterwards, we had lunch with John and Lab and afterwards Lab headed back north. By about 4:40 the sun broke out and it's now very pleasant out. So, by my clock that means Lab hit Portland sometime between 4:30 and 5:00.

It's just great that for a tuneup race and in not so great weather, you ran a negative split. That is a good way to train for a longer race later on. Good for you. And it was good to have friends there too to help you out. John and Lab are good guys. Well done. Spareribs

Nice race! I'm no fan of racing in rain either. Way to hang tough! Also I love the word "sproinky"! May I borrow it sometime?

Not bad for an "ol mom"!! You should feel pretty good about yourself and your run, not to mention your "supporters".

Woohoo on your race Tammy! So glad you felt in good shape after it was done, sounds like you're ready for the half

sorry I didn't make it, was thinking about how nice & warm the pizza place was while standing in the wind & rain at DD's soccer game. brr its was cold.. great news though, Syd had a grand ole time, freezing hands & all.. she got her first goal in her first ever soccer game. glad I didn't miss it.

Nice the DH & DS came to see you, even though the weather was bad..

Tam,

You've really progressed a long way from your ITB problems! It seems like it wasn't all that long ago when you were really struggling with that injury. You did fabulously today given the inclement weather! LabD wasn't racing a sandwich again, was he?

Good luck at the Avenue!

Nice race, Tammy--those strong negative splits should give you a lot of confidence for your half. And since you felt like you had energy left over, this race probably won't punch a big hole in your training. Good RR.

Tammy, I know it's been a long year for you with the ITBS. You were patient and handled the recovery well. Now the payoff -- a 10 mile race without pain. Congratulations. Good luck at Avenue of the Giants.

Tamster,
You did very good. I'm really happy for you and am so glad you've put your injury problems from last year behind you. You're really improving a lot now that you're injury free. I think you're just starting to realize your potential.

Tammy didn't say in her report, but she knocked over 6 minutes off her time from last years 10 mile race.

Howevah, I was quite dissapointed in not seeing the running skirt. I'd like to think your ole running buddy could get a little preview before the avenue.

John

Tammy -

Fanstatic Race, especially after it seemed that your nearly ten-year layoff wasn't a fixer for the ITBS's in last year's Pear Cup and it's finally remedied this year.

I wish I could have been with the Friendly Runners at the finish area but even your fiver mile split was faster my five miler stand-along Flower Race last week. Fine Report too but something seems to be missing.

Excellent racing,Tamalicious, you are getting really fast! Nice going setting a hugh PR for this race too.
I'm not sure you can blame the rain on Labduck, after all it is Oregon and he can't be everywhere at once, can he?

Congratulations and good luck at your debut Half Marathon at Avenue of the Giants!

Hey Tammy, I didn't get a chance to tell you yesterday, but I thought you ran very well. When I saw you at the out-and-back, and at the finish, you looked both strong and relaxed. I think when you get your last long run in, you're definitely going to be ready for The Ave.

It was great seeing you again, and thanks for the Jelly Bellys. I got back to Portland in record time thanks to them...

See you in three weeks!

thanks everyone. Except for slight hamstring tightness last night, I've felt great after this race. and this a.m., there was hardly but a twinge of tight hammy's for tammy.

John - I'll see what I can accomodate

forgive me Tet, but I intentionally left out the FR because there was nothing fasionable about me yesterday. Navy blue running pants, white long sleeve tech-type shirt, with a nylon Nike pullover over that. Blue nike hat and my older pair of Asics. There was not a dry spot on me when I got done and when I made it back to my office, I had a heckuva time peeling off dripping wet clothes to dry off. I think trying to get those clothes off was the toughest part of my morning. I'll leave it at that. . . .
