Certified fiveK, known to be a fast course, big hill in first mile, then flat or downhill coming home. I learned that AG winners get a free pair of shoes, so I arranged my schedule to take a shot at it. Meanwhile. Mrs. Ribs and Riblet decided they wanted to do it too, since Mrs. Ribs is training for a Half in early May. These kinds of races, with the family, are just the best so I wanted to tell about our day.The big storm system on its way to New England hit us last night, many tornadoes and huge hail, and left today with temps in the mid-40's and VERY windy, a condition that freaks me out. I think I let it get to me. Did a bit over a two mile warmup, very fast, with a guy who won the Dallas White Rock Marathon twice back in the 80's. He was a 2:18 marathoner then and now generally wins the 55-59 AG. He knew the course and reminded me not to go ape in the first mile and ruin myself on the hill. Maybe this was the problem, but I have no excuses. My goal in this race was to better my time 3 weeks ago of 20:49. I thought I would try to run 6:35's. But it wasn't my day. In the first mile I tried to run conservatively, and I felt okay and in control and as we approached the hill. I ran strongly up it and passed a few people. At the top was the one mile mark. I thought I would be at 6:45 at worst, so I was pretty surprised and disappointed at my first split of 6:59. This just ruined my race I think. After this I found myself running alone a lot, with nobody to key off. I was behind the fast people but ahead of the slow ones. At around two miles I caught up with a guy and ran next to him briefly. I thought he was trying to pick up the pace to stay with me, but I saw that he had on a windbreaker and his number was pinned to his back, so I knew he wasn't going to be any help. After I left him I was pretty much alone. My splits and total time for the race were: 6:59 6:55 6:48 :39 = 21:21. Pretty disappointing, but had fun anyway. More important is how the family did. After they took my chip I ran back out to pick up Mrs. Ribs and Riblet. I soon saw my son, waving and smiling at me so I wished him good luck and kept going. He ended up running 26:24 and won a 3rd in his AG. He is ten and this was a two second PR for him. Then I saw my wife and turned to run her in. We had about a half mile or so to go and she looked very strong. I yelled at her to kick in the last tenth and she really finished nicely in 28:36, a big PR for her by almost two minutes. She is so ready for her half. So although I missed my goal, my family did super and we all had fun, (and of course my new pair of shoes just makes it all a bit sweeter). Spareribs

Good report Ribs. It wasn't your best but your splits were negative. And it left you hungry for another try and the next race. Congrats to Mrs. Ribs and Riblet. Sounds like they had a greta time too. We were watching the weather reports from C.C. and saw you guys were really getting it up there. It was just a few years ago Ft. Worth got hammered.ksrunr

Good effort Ribs,I know it wasn't the time you were hoping for, but I'm afraid you won't get much sympathy from 99% of 60-year olds after running 6:54 pace and winning a new pair of shoes for your effort. I'm sure this one will do you some good--I liked the progressivley faster splits.

Congratulations on the hardware and the shoes. Sorry to hear that your goals weren't met, but the conditions weren't ripe for that I think.Three cheers for mrsribs and riblet on their PRs! Lou

Having heard about the tornadoes in your area, I was wondering if you were directly affected. Since you didn't say otherwise, I assume you were not affected other than the wind and temps that are probably cool for you. It sounds like a great day for the ribs family. A PR and 3rd AG for riblet is great. mrsribs big PR is also great. I agree that she's ready for that half. Even though you didn't meet your goal, you were still fast and the conditions sure weren't conducive to one's best outcome (except for riblet and mrsribs). Good job on winning the shoes. I interpret this to mean you won your AG. Congratulations to the whole family on running well and having a good experience together. TomS ------------------ My Profile

Zippity do dah day!I was so worried about you all while I watched the weather channel last evening! I told the r.s., "HEY, that where the Rib Cage is!" Glad you survived the storm. Sorry your race didn't go as planned but, tell Riblet his number one fan from Virginia says, "Congratulations!" And, Mrs. Ribs, excellent! Way to smash your previous personal best! Very nice running. You are, indeed, SO ready for the half. I liked reading this story.

I like it when racers post reports of family outings. It might be the fact that sharing in the events of their family gives the racer more enthusiasm than usual. Or, it might be that most simply downplay their own accomplishments and tend to highlight those of their "fam." Either way, the enjoyment factor tends to really shine through in the reports. Nice job by everyone Ribs. If the shoes don't fit, you have my address.

There is always another race, another day Ribs....You'll get that low 20 min PR, I am sure. But what a great day for the Mrs. and Kid Ribs. I remember so fondly, the Riblet running Rose and I in at Omaha. What a great time he had running back and forth to escort the runners in....I am sure it is a thrill for him to be run in now....Great job Mrs. Ribs and Riblet.Good running all, Jim

It's nice to hear about a family running together and having such a great day. I hope they gave you a voucher for the shoes so that Mrs. Ribs can have them in her size for the HM!

Even though you weren't happy with the time, you still got your shoes so that's good news. They probably love it when you win the shoes Ribs - that way they can get rid of all those weird colors that nobody in their right mind would be caught dead in. Congrats to Riblet for the AG award! And MrsRibs for the huge PR! Sounds like a win-win-win day for the Ribs Clan.Well done. Skip

SR,Congratulations to the whole family! Your wife is progressing so well and it looks like Riblet will eventually start going after the Family Records you've set over the years. Your bad days are always so much better than most of us on a good day. You are an inspiration to us all. It's also good to hear that apparently your sciatica problems have gone away. Tag

Awful performance Spare Ribs. You should be ashamed of yourself 3 sub seven minutes miles again - I'm so jealous. [This message has been edited by bigapplepie (edited Apr-14-2007).]

Wow what a great day for the Rib cage! With both the Baby back Rib and Mrs. Ribs laying down PR's! Great job and greta report and somehow after seeing your families success you do not sound as bummed with your own. You still ran a fine race Ribs. you'll get the next one. Meg gave me highly valued advice about 5K's once and in it reminded me that there is just no room for error in a race this short. Another race will come your way. cheers and congrats, Cfli

I think you mistake was looking at your watch at the first split and letting that make you lose heart. Maybe you should wear a garmin and check if that mile marker is in the right place. It sounds like a great finish time on a hilly windy course, and you earned those new shoes for sure! Woohooo for mrs.ribs and the awesome new PR! She is going to have a fabulous first Half Marathon. Kudos to riblet for getting hardware too. Congratulations on the wonderful family race day.

Temps in the mid 40s sounds perfect to me! Not sure what the problem was... What a great overall day for the RibCage. MrsRibs is really turning it on right now and a big atta boy for Riblet. Hard to believe he's only 10. Congrats to everyone on a great day! Thanks for sharing the news with us. ------------------ choover

"Family affair" ...very nice! I agree with previous post ...nice splits despite what you may think. I appreciate how you care more about how others are doing rather than yourself (not that that isn't important!). PJ
