Well, this one started off bad and improved a little...Short version -- 2nd OA, First in AG with an 18:03. Longer version -- still fighting the rib injury which makes it difficult to take that really good deep breath that you sometimes need to dig deep. This doesn't make things positive. Also, woke up to COLD and windy -- How cold? Let's move to the fashion report... Black Sub 4 stocking cap SIlver Oakley sunglasses Black Under Armour mock turtleneck MN RED singlet Black Under Armour tights -- yep Hermosaboy buckled... MN RED Tattoo pattern shorts Balega Socks Nike Marathoners Arrived an hour before the race to meet up with other MN RED team members. As we were sitting in our cars (with the engines still running), a VERY fast local runner showed up -- OK, he's got first -- what place does that leave for us? At the start, see my masters nemesis has shown up again. Is he really racing? Well, from what I hear, he doesn't race well in the cold -- forget about him. During our warm-up, coach suggests the strategy. Don't worry about the time. Get out HARD and then settle in to your pace. At about 1.5 miles, surge for 20 to 30 seconds and then settle in until it's time to kick. My teammate Brian (who I plan to run with) and I look at each other and say, "Uh right..." So, get to start and Brian line up to the right to TRY to avoid the pack of walkers that are front and center on the narrow path. Starte says go and we are off. The speedster almost immediately has 100 feet on us and Brian is 10 feet ahead of me. Come one now, get going. Through most of the first mile, I chase Brian (did I mentione that I was running without my garmin?). I catch him just before the first mile and move into the lead as we hit the WINDY portion of the course. First mile 5:33. Second mile on, I am in NO MAN'S LAND! First place is a rumour to me. Brian is back there in second (and I THINK someone else is lurking). Nobody to work off of. Mile 2 5:56. Well, not running for a PR, so just run for place. Brian is still back there, but doesn't seem to be closing. Just keep turning em over. Mile 3 5:54. 39 seconds to the finish for an 18:03 -- 2nd place by 7 seconds over the 3rd place runner. 3rd place was an 18 year old who squeaked by Brian in the 3rd mile. Brian was third in 18:15 (same time he ran on the course in better conditions last summer -- so I call that an improvement). First place was in the 16s... And most importantly -- Brian's wife ann DEMOLISHED her 5k PR! Came into the race hoping to run her first sub 30. We knew she had a lot better than that in her and she proved it with a 28:40. Another teammate, Lisa, had a PR as well improving from around 33 to 31:54. GO MN RED! Thanks for reading...
