A short report …..

In a nut shell…… 5 mile bike ride, two 5K races, and 2 glasses of beer by 9:00am and watching the world class runners at noon….. it can’t get any better than that

A little longer version……

Low and slow mileage since the 1st of the year due to illness and injury and an extra 15 pity lbs has destroyed my running spirit. Last race wasn’t much of a race so I was hoping for some motivation to get back into training.

I spent Saturday relaxing and watching the Oceanside Ford 70.3 Ironman from our condo balcony with views of the transition area and the running course going right by our unit. Watching the 2500 tri-athletes did get me thinking about Sunday’s race and getting my a$$ back into training.

Sunday was early rise at 4:45 …… drank a ½ pot of coffee and then jumped on my bike for the 5 mile ride through the fog to the race, leaving my wife the car so she could go to Palm Sunday mass with her mother. Master men’s race was right on schedule…… fired the gun 1 minute after the 7:04 train came through town. The race has a very fast downhill start with 2 out and back loops……. fun to see whose ahead of you and then once your heading back can see whose behind you. As I was going out on the first loop I did catch a glimpse of Henry Rono looking very strong.

My plan for this race was to go out and get my heart rate up and run faster than my miserable 10 min/ mile pace of late. Realistically hoping for 9 min. pace but ended up running 25:46 (8:18)….. quite a ways off of last year’s 23:53 …. but satisfied with my time. No pain in my butt or popping knees even with a little kick at the end made me a happy runner. After a 15 min. break I decided to run a cool down 5K with the master ladies….what can I say…. not that often you can run a race surrounded by women .

After two 5K races I decided it was time to quit running and have a couple of beers in the beer garden and watch some of the younger crowd run by in the other races. Around 10:30 I met my DW & MIL for breakfast before watching the world class runners battle it out in their races.

Bottom line....fun day at the races in Carlsbad.

Jim

Nice 5K, SLOjim. The experience should jump start your training and get you back where you want to be. How did the 5K with the ladies go? It does sound like a good day at the races.

A better than expected 5K, a romp with the ladies, and two beers before breakfast. Sounds like you're getting you groove back.

SLOjim,

It's great to hear that you ran a swifter than expected 5K. No pain, great news! I think you are back! And watching the tri-athletes and running with the masters women, that sounds like a blast too! You sure know how to have a great time. See you soon in PV.

I knew SLO didn't have anything to do with running and now you've proven it's as much a mismatch for your mental acumen too again proving you are truly the god of gods as most of us enjoyed watching the gals after our 5000's and never even thought of running with them.

yay Mr. 10,000.
uhm. .. . you didn't happen to see Madam 10,000 in the 5,000 did you? Congratulatons.

Glad to hear you're up and running again. I know some of those bugs can zap you. Oh yeah, that's been my life the last 12 mths. All I can say is take it easy. You ran a nice swift 5K, a nice 5K with the ladies and that's a great start. Looking forward to seeing you at the Avenue of the Giants, so make sure you take care of that knee!

Great to hear from you, Jim. Guess your "realistic" 9:00 pace didn't turn out to be very, um, realistic, as you were well under that and were of such sound mind after the race that you joined the ladies. Good move! And then beer?

I really need to get down there and run and have fun with the Californians.

Jim, I was going to write some complimentary things about your double race, the better than anticipated pace, and the enjoyable day you had, but as I type this the Rangers are getting shelled by the Angels and it looks like a 3-game sweep is coming. As a result, I am unable to say anything good to you today. Spareribs

(Nice run Jim, and welcome back to training.)

hey SLOJim, glad to hear from you after seeing you so long ago at Carlsbad. Hang in there, you will be back to your old self. It's hard to recover from illness and injury. All you can do is your best at any given time. You'll get your mojo back. The fact that you mentioned that you enjoyed the presence of those ladies tells me the mojo is making an apearance
