from Saturday's Just A Short Run half marathon.Weather = decent (30's at start, 40's by finish, some wind) Course = fairly tough with very large hill in first mile Crowd = about 1400 runners total I think Started off considerably further back in the pack than I thought. Dodged other runners and ran up the monster hill to a lovely 8:30 first mile. The rest of the race my splits were up and down between 7:20 and 7:54. I had to stop and stretch my left quad no fewer than 4 times. Bottom line was a 1:41:06 (7:43 pace) and no idea yet of my placing. Not very thrilled with my race - I have some work to do.

With that huge first mile to sap some of your energy, I think you had a great race! Everything else under sub-8:00's is good! Great job!

Sorry you weren't very thrilled with your race. At least you have a benchmark. That's tough having a big hill so early on. Nice weather minus the wind. What's next?

Jeep Davis 5k and then Cleveland Marathon is current plan.

Nice finish time! A flatter course will make you feel like flying.

Rob, you may not have been thrilled, but it was a nice race. To have a big hill at the start and need to stop 4 times to stretch you quad and still run a 7:43 pace is not shabby. Congratulations and good luck with your quad.TomS ------------------ My Profile

I agree with Tom - big hill, 4 stretches, and still such a fast pace! I think it will only get better for you. Good luck on the next races, and I look forward to reading those reports. ------------------ Holly

Races like this teach you how to deal with adversity and help you learn lessons about what to do when things go wrong. Your pace was pretty steady considering the difficulties. Write it down as a great training run. You did well. Spareribs

Rob,Very surprised at your time, because I have observed your training. When you are healthy, I have you figured for sub-7:15 pace in a half-marathon. Dark Horse ------------------ I'm a dark horse, running on a dark race course

Sorry you were disappointed. Hope the next race goes differently for you. If I run in Cleveland, I'll see if I can find you and FFinn before the race. cj

Sorry you weren't thrilled with the result, Rob, but with your approach to training, you'll figure it out. What do you think caused the quad problem? Hydration? Fuel? Recent injury? I'm curious to know how you warmed up too, esp. having in mind that hill right off the bat. Hope you can allow yourself some easy days this week. Good luck with your next two races.
