Perfect race weather for a 12:10 pm 5k through the streets of Fall River, Mass.
Thirteenth running of 5k to honor fallen police officer and well attended every year from throughout the police and fire dept.s of the area.
Short speechs by the Mayor, son of Officer Tom, the national anthem and we are off.
First 3/4 of mile is all uphill and between dodging around slower runners and the hill, my thoughts of breaking 7:00 are toast, but still manage a 7:18
At the top of the hill, make a sharp right and it's flat for about a mile and I start to settle in and hit mile two in 7:07
Right at the moment the 305 signaled 2 miles, I am passed by a female I know ,that I expect should be farther in front which gives me a little mental boost.
Mile three is downhill slighly for the first half then right turn on to a main street and up and down small hills straight to the finish. mile 3 in 7:06
I'm trying to do the math to see if I can break 22:00 minutes and run all out for the last 1/10 ... not happening! Last 0.1 in 41 seconds

Bottom line 22:11 for avg pace of 7:09
84th out of 753
8th out of 61 in age group ( male50-59)
modern PR for 5k (previous 22:30)

running attire: blue NB shorts, Fire Dept. Tee(had to show the colors), NB 766 and Garmin 305

Fran, you've got to do better at cherry-picking your races so you don't have hills & crowds & all! Very nice PR despite!

Fran, you ran a great race to PR by 19 sec (in the modern era) in such a short race. I'm glad you were able to do so well in a race for a cause that meant so much to you. Congratulations.

Great race and PR, Fran! 12:10 seems an odd time to start a race, though. I bet without the crowd to dodge you'd have beat 22:00.

Thanks Holly.
I think the odd start is to allow police officers who may have finished a shift at 8am somewhere, make the race.
I probably should have started a little closer to the front and 22 flat would have been mine.
Very nice race but not well organized for the number of runners. No mile markers or time splits(water stops were at approx. mile splits). No chip timimg, so finish corrals got crowded quickly.
Without my Garmin, I would have been lost. Your going to love yours when it arrives.

So close to your goal but a great modern day PR for you. As others have said, 22.00 is there for the taking. Well done.

It isn't just the crowded starts and hilly courses but those darned sharp turns that slow you down too. I know you have a sub 22 race waiting for you soon. Nice fashion report, I especially like the fireman tee-shirt. Congratulations on your PR.

Nice PR, Fran. I agree with Ilene, that the sharp turns can slow you down. Sub 22 coming up.

Very nicely done, Fran, that's a hugh PR. 10-year age groups are a pain!

Stay focused on that 41 second final tenth Fran. It's a shade faster than 7 minutes a mile, which means you kicked it in nicely. Every race should have some key piece of learning or a good positive takeaway to focus on for your next one. For you, it is this final tenth, plus the pretty consistent mile times. Well done.
