Second Annual Frensley 5K, Norman, Oklahoma

Norman is about 70 miles north of Ardmore on I35...

I am not sure of all the details: Patrick Frensley was a Senior at OU that died (April 2005) from injuries sustained after being hit by a train while running. The race is organized for chairty.
His mother runs in the race. It starts in front of his Frat house.

Start: 9:00 AM
Weather: 59 degrees, cloudy, humid and wet.

Cloths, Boston Marathon top and shorts, which is almost intimidating to myself as it represents high expectations (in my mind) to myself and others.

Plan: New VDOT says I should be able to run a 6:54 5K, which would be 12 seconds/mile faster than my best 22:02 5K AT Muenster, Texas, April 1999. Since then the best I have done is a 22:22 a 2 years ago while I was preparing for the Chevron Houston Marathon, 2006.

I only run one or two 5K's a year since most are 70-100 miles away. So I am relatively in experienced at this level of running.

My age, 54, weight 147

This season, while training for Boston, may represent my best conditioning ever so I was anxious to see how I would do in a certified, chip timed 5K race.

My training program prepared me for a 8-10K race for today but since I could not find any I chose this 5K in Norman Oklahoma.

My running buddy Kevin came along and he too was looking for an impressive performance and maybe PR. Kevin is 39.

We got there at 7:45 AM, registered and headed out for some warm ups.

The race was delayed a half hour or so due to an unusually large quantity if runners showing up to register at the last moment.

The weather was turning out to be almost perfect.

The course is a VERY flat out and back in neighborhoods which block the wind.

While we lined up a young girl (probably in her late 20's) looks up at me and say, boy I feel old. She was referring to all the college students racing. I replied, if you feel old then I really feel old; I am still looking for someone in my age group. We discussed our race plans. I said this was a tune up race for me and she looks at my shirt and says, ...for Boston? I said yes, she replied, be careful it isn't time to get hurt. I agreed.

The race is Championchip timed but only at the finish, so getting toward the front is important.

I was about 15 feet from the front when the gun went off. I guess it took about 5 seconds to get across the starting line and a few hundred yards or more before I could run unencumbered.

I decided to go by my Garmin and not look for mile markers.

I checked my Garmin and saw a mid 6 split...its early...but man, I feel great.

Mile 1: 6:34, my best ever was a 6:57 in 1999.
Mile 2: 6:48, I am in the groove and really feeling good. It isn't EVEN feeling hard yet.
Mile 3: 6:51, I don't believe this....Where are those seven minute or more splits? Sixes? I am in new territory.

Now I can see the finish line from about .6 mile out.

I am holding my own, feeling great: with a few hundred yards to go I hear someone approach me to my left, an old guy, maybe my age group (notice he is old....but not me). No way is he passing, I move slightly ahead, he challenges again, I move ahead, then he trys one more time, I decided to give it everything as he chokes on my dust...hehe

I look at the clock.......20:44, I don't believe this..

I found Kevin, he ran a PR of 19:34...I found the old guy and thank him for the push....and tell him that he helped me run a major PR...He immediately replies.....

IT WAS SHORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I said WHAT?

He looks at his wife as she tries to shush him....He says, NO I know it was short. I know I wasn't running that fast. She pulls him away.

I tell Kevin...he looks at his Garmin and sees 3.05 miles, mine says 3.09 miles, so we figure we are OK...

Kevin proceeds to talk to the guy that owns DG racing (that certified the race) and as I walk up he says..

"Sorry guys they turned you around about 2 blocks too soon"

I said, "You can't be serious, we came up here to try for a PR and the course is short?"

He kiddingly replies, "Well, you can run it again if you want to"...

For cryin out loud, I can't believe this.

By this time everyone is finding out it is short....

So now we are trying to figure what our finish time WOULD HAVE BEEN...

Later I checked out the finish results.

I think I was 23/96.....and get this

1/9 in the 50-59 age group..and the guy I passed in the end was in my group....hehe

So, place counts since we all ran short.

Overall, both Kevin an I are pleased and disappointed at the same time.

At least I confirmed in my mind that I have improved my conditioning and a real 5K PR is on the horizon......

NOW....BOSTON HERE I COME......yeehaw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim,
Ardmore, OK.

Tim that was one fantastic run. I could tell you were in running nirvana. Bummer that the course was short. Is that a sub-20 on your horizon? Good to see you priming so well for Boston. You're gonna rock, man

So it was short...you still kicked some serious hind quarters! Terrific! I think the young girl was pretty wise for her age - saying don't get hurt!!!! Keep your eye on the big picture. Congratulations on beating out the other guy! Great running!

Way to go wa5yom. In spite of the short course, you were easily at a PR pace. The first in AG is great. Congratulations. After you do Boston, maybe you can find another 5K that is measured correctly and get a PR without an asterisk. Keep up the good work.

It is what it is and according to your splits, you ran faster than before.

You also ran the same race as everyone else and got NUMERO UNO in your highly competitive age group.

Excellent running Tim!

(Say, I've heard of Norman OK before? Haven't I? What is it famous for?)

Great run or should I say sprint. Even if it was short, that AG award is fantastic. You'll do well at Boston.

Listen to me Tim. Never mind that course distance if it was in error. The point is that you have always had good speed. You just don't do enough short work to uncover it. I knew this at White Rock last year. All your work and dedication has been around the marathon, and as soon as you get done doing that race to your satisfaction, you might re-orient your training to shorter distances. The speed in you is just waiting to come out. I'm really happy you got this result to whet your appetite. There is no better feeling than to go into a marathon knowing you have done your distance work and your speed sharpening. You are really ready. Looking forward to that Boston report. Go get 'em buddy. Spareribs

If your garmin had 3.09 then a 3.10 probably puts you at a 20:49 finish time. You have really gotten a lot faster, Wow! Congratulations on the hardware and AG win. And thanks for the exciting report, I was gnawing on my knuckles.

Wow Tim what at eventful finish. Well done for holding off the other guy and taking the age group award too. You are setting yourself up for Boston nicely. Great race, well done.

Congrats on your PR.

Being from Oklahoma and running numerous races here, I must say that I try to avoid DG races...they've had problems with other races the past few years. Glen's and Fleet Feet Tulsa both do a much better job, and you know their courses are 100% accurate.

Well, you know the subject of short races is a tender one for me...

But your splits were FAST, even if the total distance was short. Awesome job! And great job on the AG win!

Tim that was an impressive PR and forget about it being short...so what, everyone else ran the same "short" race and you still took 1st in your AG. I agree with some of the others, after Boston look to run a few shorter races and train for them and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see you go sub 20 real soon.

Congratulations again and see you in Boston!

Wow, Tim, you are going to RAWK Boston! Who cares if the course was measured a wee bit short. Your mile splits a la Garmin were phenomenal, and are a good measure of your ability at this point. And bravo for pouring it on at the end and surviving injury-free. You should be able to line up in Hopkinton feeling very confident!

Thanks for all the fine remarks....short or not I am still riding a little high on this one.....I would have been pleased just to get under 21 minutes....but my interval training was telling me that a 6:40 or so might not be impossible..

I told Kevin last weekend...."just give me a flat, out and back, no wind and perfect cool weather day (don't we all wish for this?) and I have a 5K PR coming my way...hehe

Yesterday, I was blessed to have the perfect running day....

FYI...
Ah, yes, Norman Oklahoma.........it is know to be the home of the OU Sooners and this race was right on the edge of the campus...

Again...thanks for the votes of confidence....

Tim,
Ardmore, OK.

Nice job! Sorry it was short but the 1st in Ag is what counts.

I know the feeling though having run the JP Morgan Chase Challenge Championships in a huge PR only to find it was a tenth of a mile short. That was the difference between 7:05/mile and 7:17/mile.

Isn't it great how marathon training improves your performance at all distances?

Tim, you deserve to be on a high from this. Three miles at 6:51 or better when you'd hoped to run at 6:54? That's flying, and it wasn't even feeling hard. You are really peaking. Good luck at Boston!

Tim,

Congratulations.

I can't help but think what a difference a year makes. Last year you were nursing your legs and worrying about every aspect of Boston. This year you're healthy, running strong, and you know Boston. Great job of training. Your smile may be even bigger this year.

I hope that knowing your exact distance from the Garmin doesn't distract you from the huge accomplishments you are making.

Karl, I would have to disagree. I ran and PR'd a 5k this weekend and would have been lost without it. (silly race had no accurate mile markers and therefore no splits).

I don't concentrate on it, and just use it as a guide.

Tim, nice motoring, man! I've been working hard to break 22 flat which would mean sub 7's (which I have only done in a race once so) and I'm getting close. I think the one that mentioned marathon training woking for the shorter distances is right...has worked for me.

Nice job!
