Rosie,This is like two reports in one. A RR and a history report. Great race (er march). I used to live in the desert and always was amazed by and appreciated its beauty. Very interesting background to this event too. You sure do think a lot, Craig

Rose... a moving report. It was so somber. I commend you and Ralf for participating in this "race". It really does seem like a "march" would be more in order for this one. I like the way you put things into perspective. Well done!

Thanks AJ and everyone, you are kind. The tone of the event was more solemn than somber. During the march, we laughed and chatted with each other. We were one. Care Free, you are too kind. And so deft. You captured it.

I've been avoiding reading this topic...I didn't know it was a race report, and I, like you, have an aversion to reading about horrific events. But thank, thank you, thank you for telling about the march so wonderfully once I got the gumption to open up this thread!--Robin

Rose, I also opened your RR with some trepidation, wondering how the typical celebratory atmosphere of a foot race and could mesh with a commemoration of one of the most horrific ordeals in WWII history. I appreciate your thoughtful writing.

Rosie OCG my fren,What a fine RR. I am moved by your descriptions of the events, both historical and modern. We often forget the debt that we owe to our father's generation. Tom

Well said. Well written. There are so few WWII survivors left to retell their experiences. Thanks for taking the time to give such a moving account of this ordeal. "Those who fail to study history are doomed to repeat it."

Sniff, sniff. Rose, you know how sentimental I am and how deeply ingrained the military sense of honor is in my family. This report truly was beautiful. I'm still teary. You have many gifts, clearly one is the ability to write so passionately to call such emotions to those who read your work. I can only imagine how moving this experience must have been for you. Very nice report and thanks so much for sharing. Thanks too for reminding us that we are given a gift a life and should make the most of it while we have it. By the way, I think you look great, no wrinkles, very svelt and young.

I should've posted these links in my original reply but forgot. We have an emeritus art professor at my university who is a survivor of the Bataan Death March. Since the Japanese destroyed all photographic evidence, his sketches of his imprisonment remain the only visual record. I was fortunate enough to see this collection a few years ago and will never forget it. Here is a bit of history on the artist with some links to the drawings. What a life this man has had: http://www.artmontana.com/article/steele/ and also http://www.msubillings.edu/urelations/releases/2005/2005July18Art.htm ------------------ choover

Rose,I missed this RR when it was originally posted. I think I miss alot of the really good stuff in this forum. Anyways, saw the link on today's daily and came to read. I think these races really do remind us of the sacrifices that strangers albeit fellow countrymen make for all Americans. I had the privilege of running in two races last year (the Marine Marathon and the Devildog 10K) that brought similar feelings of thanks not to mention awe of what our servicemen and women have done for me and my country. Having Darkhorse and his reports from Kosovo are also great reminders of the sacrifice that these men and women make for us. Thanks running this and for the RR. Paul

I unfortunately missed this report when posted too. As others have said, what a moving race report and reminder of our history and those that we should remember. Also, nice 3rd place finish! I can't imagine running in 2 miles of sand!

I thought I knew enough too and wasn’t sure what it was at all (Intrepid?) and couldn’t figure out why it would have to do with New Mexico but I’d be honored to do at least the hike part, barefoot no matter how bad the surfaces, . . . if fact, the worse the better to honor. Thank you rose.
