Short version - This was a fitness test pre-Boston. I aggravated my ham-string, stretched, and happy with a 1:31.

Longer version:

Last year I got a 1:30:05, which really bothered me because they had a chip and a timing mat for the finish line, but not the start. I know I was more than five seconds back at the start, but official time is official time. :-P

This year I wanted to beat 1:30, but not go all out and risk messing up my schedule for Boston. Unfortunately, near the end of last weekend's 21-miler I tore my lower hamstring slightly. It felt ok for my Tuesday night speedwork, but halfway thru it I had to back out. The rest of the week I rested it and only ran easy miles.

Sunday I felt fine so I drove down, got my number and went for a warm up. While running around I noticed my ham was tight, but not painful.

I lined up within 5 seconds of the start (just in case) and off we went. The first few miles were relaxed as it was down hill. By about three miles my ham started to bother me enough that I gave up on trying for a PR. I stopped and stretched it a little, but it felt like I might have to drop out.

After the hills and more stretching it felt good enough to go half way. Then with a tail wind I got to 7 or 8 miles. So as not to over extend it I shortened my stride slightly which made me work harder.

We rounded the far end of the course. This section was pretty exposed being right along the ocean. The wind was gusty and changed direction a few times.

I was getting tired in the final few miles. I told myself to slow if needed, but don't stop (unless ham got worse). At the 12 mile mark there is a final long hill, which is a toughie, especially going into a headwind. It felt like we were walking at times After cresting the hill, we turned and a bunch of us just sprinted the last half mile.

While trying for a PR would certainly have injured my ham, I'm happy that I could at least test my fitness level. I saw a orthopedist today and doing PT starting Wednesday. Hopefully I can get by this injury before Boston.

Here are my splits and avg HR.

1 6:43 163
2 6:48 173
3 7:30 172 -streching
4 7:09 166 -streching
5 7:04 166 -streching
6 6:37 169
7 6:35 167
8 6:30 169
9 7:00 170
10 6:59 168
11 7:05 171
12 7:19 171
13.1 8:05 169

Final time was 1:31:20 334th out of 1800 and 45/176 in age group.

I'd recommend the race to anyone in the area. While the weather isn't the best, the organizers make up for it. There are lots of friendly volunteers, great crowds and fish chowder and fish sandwiches for post race food. :-)

Good for you for keeping the bigger prize in mind. Racing a long a shore line is great. A lot of serenity. Race organizers should limit headwinds. Thanks for the stratagy tips.

Good report. I raced it last year and it was one of my worst half marathon times, but, as you said, an enjoyable race. Hope your ham responds to stretches and good luck in Boston.

Great job! You did very well, considering your hammy. Hope Boston finds you injury free.

Fish chowder! Amazing!

Rest up that hammie busiman. Boston is the goal and I congradulate you in keeping that in mind and adjusting your pace accordingly. Only 1:30 off your goal plan with a sore hammie and stopping to stretch it out. You look to be in great shape for a fine run at Boston. Good luck and keep us posted.

Busiman, that is a very good time for having to stop and stretch during the race, as well as facing headwinds along the water (yuk!) I am sure you would have been under 1:30 if not for all those factors. This does sound like a very pretty half marathon course. I hope you get the hamstring healed up before Boston!

Sounds like you enjoyed this race and your performance despite the tight hammy's. I hope they aren't bothering you at all for Boston.

To me your racing times are astounding, but I'm a pokey runner, so even your slower times are something I could never achieve. Great job!

Sure would like to run that well at less than full strength. Hell, I wish I could run like that AT full strength.

yum, chowda. Guess I wouldn't expect any less from New Bedford.

Nice job, busi. That hamstring injury sounded scary. To stop and stretch several times and still run so fast while taking it easy is impressive. Congratulations. Now take care of getting yourself properly healed.

Let us know how the PT goes, busiman. Great result, even with the injury. I hope it heals quickly and you're ready to go in Boston.

Oh, yum ... fish sandwiches and chowder. I'd certainly go for that reason alone!

Thanks for the nice replies everyone!

I went to PT this afternoon, and after a bunch of stretching, poking, ultrasound and e-stimulation, he thought I'd be ok for Boston. He confirmed that doing the half marathon wasn't the best idea, but backing off saved my ham from an nasty injury and ability to do Boston.

They gave me some good stretching and exercises to help it heal properly. It was nice to be able to ask a lot of question of experts like that. Its tight, but not painful. I skipped running again today, maybe i'll do a few miles tomorrow.

The funniest part was that they said in about two weeks they get a flood of 'panic' injuries from people planning to do Boston. Lots of first-timers that over do the training to 'squeeze a little more in'. It was hard enough getting in at this point, I'm sure half the panic is not being able to book a visit. :-)

Thanks again and I hope to see many of you in Boston!

Sorry for the delay in posting on your RR, busiman. I remember reading it, and thought I already had. But wanted to tell you how smart I thought it was of you not stretching out for that PR in view of your higher goal at Boston. Still great time though, especially since you were fighting the wind. Hope you find all the right combinations to minimize this injury so you will be strong for your April race. cj

A dreaded triple H threat...headwind, hills, and hammy. You did awesome despite these obstacles! Good going, and good wishes for getting the hamstring issue resolved for your Boston run.
