Perfect day. 46F, overcast. 1.5 hr drive up island with my biggest fan, Mr. S.After feeling perkless in the latter half of the week, I wasn't feeling confident about this one and was really wondering how to run it. I decided to try 10 sec. under MP for the first half and see how that felt at midpoint and turn it up. I spied the 65-69 male that I ran with in last month's 12k race, and since I so enjoyed running with him, I thought I'd chase him today. So I lined up behind my latest crush, but he started quite fast so I held back. This is unlike me. At 1k, I was about 20 sec. under MP, but I felt relaxed and quite good. Even had time to gawk at about a half dozen bald eagles watching us from the trees that lined the road. Pace was steady through k14 when the "old" guys started to take off. I went with them but wondered how long they (and I) could keep this up. Snow geese took flight above our heads. Although I hated to do it, the fellas began falling off pace, so I went ahead, with my crush's encouragement . I paid the price a little toward the end with the fast bit, but I finished fairly well. Splits if you care (in kilometres): 4:30, 26, 26, 23, 22, 36, 29, 36, 29, 26, 25, 16, 21, 04, 07, 10, 18, 16, 30, 24, 09 (+ little bit at end) My watch: 1:32.43 Official (no chip) time: 1:32.59 2nd AG (6 sec behind winner ... I had no clue she was so close) I'm pretty sure this is a PR. I did run a fast one in '99 in Holland, but I can't remember the time. Buh. So a PR of about 7 minutes; mm, pretty chuffed about that. My friends placed 5th Women's 40-44, 1st Women's 60-64, and 5th Men's 65-69. My crush placed 2nd in Men's 65-69. Guess we both need to pick up the pace. Good grub (veggie chili), good times. Hope my knee and heel love me in the morning. Thanks for reading and, as always, for the motivation to keep on running.

SS, nice job on the race. Every split below your goal pace! And so close to the AG win. I hope this is the shot in the arm you need over the next couple of weeks.Mark

Wow! darn fast. Especially for a girl. ? "chuffed"....I guess that's good. sounds painful. In all seriousness, since I'm a troller and fairly new to the boards. (as a participant) Any running philosophies/training secrets you'd like to share with the "slower runners" would be appreciated. good run,
Doug

Nice run, girl! I'll say this is a PR -- closer to 8 minutes unless my math is bad. And another 2nd in AG placing! Looks like you accomplished your goal -- kicking it up the last half. Are you starting your taper now for Boston? That's probably where you're going to find your perk ... just don't use up all of that precious energy transplanting strawberries! So you didn't try the Lance Armstrong line on your crush again, right? Enjoy Boston, kiddo. You've certainly put in all the training. I hope you have the time of your life there!!! All the best, Cindyedited becuz I'm not used to cool code... [This message has been edited by cajohnson5 (edited Mar-18-2007).]

Well, I suppose "chuffed" is better than "gobsmacked", right? SS, it sounds like you are fast and getting faster. Good luck in the rest of your pre-Boston training program!------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

When you were complaining earlier this week about the vanished perkiness, I thought it might be a good sign. I've noticed that a particularly good run often follows a few crummy days... I think our bodies use those bad runs to recharge. Recharge you did--what a splendid race and AG placement! And have you checked the age-graded percentile of that time?--you are approaching Meg territory with that one. I think you could run Boston MUCH faster than 3:25 if you have The Day. Now for my beef. I have scoured youtube all afternoon and haven't seen the video highlights from Sans SouciCam yet. <tapping fingers impatiently> And as for the chuffing, try a little Bodyglide. Your fan, Dave

SS, you ran a great race, beautifully paced. You will do wonderfully well at Boston . . . . but I think that you well have to make a slight adjustment to you goal pace . . . you will have to drop it down a bit. Keep up the good work and enjoy your taper.patrick

SS, holy smokes, you nearly won your age group! Way to hold a strong pace right from the start. A very nice performance, especially on a day when you were not feeling jazzed about racing.About the last 10K -- if you hadn't pushed a little, wouldn't you have had second thoughts afterward? (This is coming from someone who has finished more than once race wondering if I could have given a better effort. ) Veggie chili sounds like perfect post-race grub. Best wishes for retaining your sanity leading up to Boston.

Sounds like you soared with the Eagles and kept up with the old buzzards.Nice race and a good race. Good placement. I have often wondered how many times a second place finisher in age group misses grabbing first place because they don't recognize the competitor. Looking forward to hearing how Boston goes for you. Thanks for sharing. Vista
