John tipped me off to this race a couple wks ago so decided to give it a whirl. I like the 5 mile distance. John's injury prevented him from running today, but being the good running supporter that he is, he showed up to cheer me on. Dh and DS were also in attendance with me. Just prior to the start of the 5 mile run they had a kids Leprechaun Lap around the high school track. I'm not sure but there might have only been a small handful of kids participating - like under 5 I think? But, DS (7) came in first so he was happy with that. Then the 5 mile race began and started with one lap around the track then off to a flat out and back course with a finishing lap on the track again before going through the chute. I kept a steady/slowish pace the whole way. They didn't have any callers so I'm not sure on my exact times, but I hit the turn around at 22-23 minutes. At that I thought I might have a shot at beating my Portland 5 miler PR of 46:44. But really I didn't care today. My training has been so lax since the beginning of the year and I've only been putting in around 30 miles a month, compared to the 60 a month I was doing towards the end of last year. I came back to the highschool track and John ran across the field and started to yell at me to get my butt in gear! So, I picked up the pace and as I came around the bend in the track I saw I was just past 46 minutes. I crossed the finish line at what I think said 46:20, but could have been 46:21. This is a fast group of runners in this area and I didn't even come close to placing in my age group (40-49). I think I was 8th and there might have only been 10 in my age group altogether. Lots of fast highschool track/cross country kids come out for these local races. John would remember for sure, but I think the male overall winner did it in 25ish minutes. It was a perfect morning for a race (cool, sunny, 50 degress or thereabouts) and I enjoyed myself a lot. Had a nice conversation for about a mile with a late 20'ish girl who just started running about a year ago, lost 30 lbs since she started running and this was her first attempt at the 5 mile distance. She ended up placing 3rd in her AG and I think was about 20 seconds or so behind me. She did real well. Fashion report: I was void of anything green (and I'm even part Irish but just didn't have any running attire that had green on it). Black shorts, white long sleeve coolmax shirt, Asics, white Nike visor, peony pink lipstick. ------------------ Tamalina

Congratulations Tamster on your 5 mile PR without even trying. Even void of green you still looked good and didn't that race director have on enough green for everyone . (He must know spareribs as they had the same beads). One day you will get serious about running and discover the hidden talent you have. Since you've correctly described my style of communication as "yelling" , I should make one final attempt at saving face on the forum here, as I think I'm on some sort of double secret probation. When you entered the stadium for the last lap, I saw that you had an excellent chance of beating your PR, however you were, as my dear mother would say, "lollygagging" about and chatting with another runner. I merely hobbled over to the other side of the track to give you some vocal encouragement. It was a nice day for a run and I enjoyed talking with your DH while we waited for you. John

Alright Tammy! Congrats on the PR. And to your speedy DS in the Leprechaun Lap. It sounds like he's got some of that natural Tamster speed.I hope your Pear Blossom Run goes as well.

Tammy, Congrats on your PR! Sounds like a great time was had. I just think it's so funny that you had breath left to have a nice 1-mile chat, and still got a PR.... Considering you think you've been lax about your training, I think you're in pretty good shape. ------------------ Holly

Tamster -- good thing John is such a great athletic supporter or you may have missed your PR. I know you have been struggling a little with injuries and discouragement. Hope this gives you a little boost. You do a fine job, and I always appreciate your posts on the daily. You also are very creative when it comes to thinking up new topics for the boomers to run with. cj And congratulations to your little guy for taking 1st!

cj, I actually originally wrote "athletic supporter" but then changed it to running supporter before posting! LOL dreams? dreams? Why of course I had dreams. And that's all I'm saying this time John - thanks for vocally encouraging me there on the track, because if you had not done that I probably wouldn't have beat my PR. So, really I owe this all to you! by the way, what did you and my DH talk about for 46 min??? I do think I can do better on this distance if I train more. I know I don't take my training as seriously as most here. You know, in last months RW, there was an article on what kind of runner are you - which ranged from the competitive warrior type to the social, just have fun type. Based on my responses to the quiz, I'm a social runner (and we all know these quizes are the gospel truth!). And with my history of non-running topics and hottubing parties I like to organize, that really shouldn't surprise anyone. For now, I enjoy running races, I like to have a respectable time but I'm not at a point in my life where i want to crank out 50-60 mpw. Maybe someday. Thanks for reading my report and the positive feedback. I love this group! Ok - I'm off to disrobe and hop in the hottub now!!! ------------------ Tamalina

Tam - you’ve got me beat too but all my few five-milers have been in 8K’s, and the times have been about the same whether I trained or not but even my training is mostly not. However, since I’m 1/4 Irish and you’re 1/3, maybe we can make up for such an egreengious fashion misstatement at the Eugene Miracle Mile if I bring some green beads and maybe you can bring greenish hue thongs. Note: please add how you got to be 1/3 Irish on our chat list: In the meantime, I hope you invite your athletic supporters to the hot tub too. (Incidentally, I thought Tamster was with John, Tamalina, the formal, and Tamathongy me. The John one is the best though; however, not that he doesn’t deserve it that’s for sure, but does he get two now?) Originally posted by TammyM: Irish/English/German here. Probably about 1/3 of that is Irish from my dad's side.Sadly I own very little green. I'm a bad lil Irishgirl. [/QUOTE]

Tamalina? OK, a big thumbs-up on the time and greta PR, but I'm afraid it's a thumbs-down on the fashion report with no green on St. Paddys Day! Oh well, we'll let you off the hook this time.Keep up the good work! ------------------ - Runnin' in Rochester Rochrunner

Congrats on the PR, Tamster! I'll be over shortly for a dip in the hot tub...I'll be the one in the Kelly green thong. It's OK to be a social runner. The sport could use a few more and a few less "Garmin down to the 1/1000 types" . Whatever works for you is perfect. It is supposed to be fun. Greta RR and good for you! Fran
