Mine is actually a left over from auto racing.
I have ALWAYS raced something.
I started out with toy RC cars in the dirt, moved up to bigger, mo money RC street cars.
Natural progression moved me into Drag Racing real cars of my own and eventually driving for Stevens Racing in the Super Charged Warriors circuit.
Yeah, it was cool driving a 1948 Fiat Topalino with a Supercharged 509ci Chevy engine running 200mph in the quarter mile.
Then I grew up and race only my feet!!!

(But I did keep one of my race cars!! 1964 Plymouth Belvedere w/440)

Goodness - good thing it is slow at work - I had to read all these posts to see if I ever posted about my handle or not. Very good reading though - and some very clever handles.

Mine is not that original - I went to reply on a post and found out I had to register - panic then set in as I wanted to do this right away.

I just figured "hopeful" because I was very hopeful to become a runner - be it 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles - who ever thought I'd be up to 6 and addicted! The 45 is my age and now I gotta figure out what to do in October when I'm 46. hmmmm

So, Spareribs, was there ever a winner declared??

Actually, I did declare several winners and the post is on another thread. I gave out Rib awards for most imaginative, etc. I can't recall all of them. I didn't poke fun at people who had serious names, or self-explanatory names, nor did I insult anyone who had a name of a pet or an animal lover, as I respect them too much. Names that come to mind that I awarded were Stealthrunner, Faceplant, just some real funny ones. While the thread was hot it sure was a fun one. Thanks for posting. I can't wait til you are not Hopeful any more, but a RealRunner! Spareribs

Umm... I am tall too (2).

Did not realize when I chose the name that "the" tallrunner was such a high profile boomer.

I was quickly searching for a username; limited time on the 'puter as I recall and I wanted to post a qustion. Tallrunner was taken, so I was ever so creative and chose tallrunner2.

My handle just signifies my (new improved) attitude towards running, fitness, and athletics. When I hit 40 I realized it was no longer (so) significant to be "better" than anyone else - my focus is just to get a little better every day. I have a fairly competitive nature, being the youngest of 4 brothers who were all active in athletics from our earliest years.

I'm reminded of a quotation - I think I remember it properly - taken from my chiildhood hero, Al Oerter, the discus thrower who won in, I think, the 1956, 60, 64, and 68 Olympics. I confess I may be a little fuzzy on it now. Anyway, he said "The progress comes inches at a time...I think of it as a private kind of madness..." But the magic in that is that I've found something that I believe I can continue to improve in, even if it's only a little at a time, for years to come.

I am the Rundog, I seem to collect other dogs when I,m out. And, then I name them, let,s see there,s Skittles, a Spitz mix, Zero, a fast beagle, Muddy, a collie mix, that runs in the lake!, Pinkie, who knows? Brownie, a chocolate lab, and Chugger, another medium mix. I always have a running partner.

While managing an Internet service provider in '94, we needed to manage large modem banks(100s). To find failing modems we wrote a program, called busyman, that would check for busy signals.

We had to give it accounts on all of our systems, and until last year or two ago the passwords still worked. That was 10 years ago. :-P

Why do I keep skipping this post, it is going to take me a long time to read all these post though I have read some of them. I used to use Trotalong until I restarted running then since I couldn't get it without a number with it I decided to make up something of my own. RunsTheBitterroot seemed so appropriate as I live and run along the Bitterroot river valley and it is original I hope. My signature was choosen years ago before I moved to Montana because it was something I did during the summer on vacation and it was my dream for after I retired which has come true. Larry D.

Crap,

now that I see there are a few Huskies on board I guess I'm obligated to post also! (graduated from UW in '94)

Having read through the thread I also was humbled a bit by the creativity others showed, but the trick is to become comfortable with what you've got (or something like that, I guess). I chose my name because I'm a struggling grad student working with protein structures and I thought it would inspire me. I'll let you know how it turns out!

I guess I'm not a boomer (yet), so I hope it's ok to crash the party.

Caver, well I've caved extensively in this TAG area over the past 15 years. Caving was my passion before taking up running. Running is easier to find time for with 2 young kids.

I use to post under the handle of "okierunner" (i think...) but when i got back, i never could figured out or remember the password, so i just created a new handle. which, in fact, was a better idea anyway. i have relocated from OKLA to TN (chattanooga, more specifically), so i am "n TN running" now. Also, Econo -- i have a degree in economics -- teach part-time at college -- but work full-time in computer stuff -- go figure!!

The first letters (ajh) are the initials of my three dogs (two deceased now). The last two (jc) are my initials. All my handles are a variation of this depending on the site's requirements.

I like how in my intro post people started referring to me as AJ. I could only hope to aspire to the pureness of my dogs.

Hijack! Welcome ntn. I get all sorts of econo-grief on this board.

Structure man, your handle reminds me of a pw I had in grad school as a husky. It was yometrix. Yo as in YES I CAN DO IT and metrix for my worst subject, econometrics. I think shame was why I finally finished the phd. I had spent so much time as a student it would be embarrassing not to finish.

Tetsujin, I'll look up the '05 Dawg Dash date. Will be doing the Omaha marathon on 9/25 so recovery is a concern. Don't fret about the "dawg" thing -- it's corny but be proud. Woof!

Econo and Tetsuji,

"Commence hijacking of thread"

I'm chuckling as I read your posts, because my grad school experience is not so unlike what you're talking about! I did have a career after my undergraduate studies (I've been back in grad school for 3 years now), but I'm thinking that it will be more like 6 years to complete my doctorate. I just changed labs (I wasn't getting anything done with my old advisor) and I'm cautiously optimistic that my new advisor will work out better. To top things off, I'm attending Iowa State, my wife and I are originally from the west coast (Portland and Seattle, respectively), and she's really wanting to move closer to home. I'm in a bit of a fix!

"End hijacking of thread"

My running philosophy. Folks always talk about form and how many breaths/step and stride length and... I argue that all you gotta know is the pattern. Stick with it and the rest takes care of itself. Needed to remind myself of this is I trained for my first longer races - so it also became a mantra that got me up tough hills.

Thanks for resurrecting this, as a newcomer I hadn't seen it.

Now I finally understand "Spareribs," which always perplexed me.

I loved the "ProFromDover" story (MASH fan, too.)

I was a little shocked by the "hookers" and "cheap" women here, though! (WoolGatherer64 and Econo). Who knew?

Anyway, mine's simple and spur of the moment.

Tramps:
1. verb, intransitive. “moves with firm, heavy steps; trudges”
2. noun, rock and roll. “Tramps like us, baby we were …”

#1 is accurate; #2 is a bit of wishful thinking from a big Springsteen fan. (and not very original as I learned from reading about Tramp_j !)

A couple of observations from rereading this thread:

- Earthrunner was normal
- I can't find tetsujin on the internet besides for some limited motion robots. Is this right?
- A lot of posters are no longer posting any more....
