I had noticed that my one toenail looked funny for the past couple weeks. Well, after my first 19 mile run it turned black/blue and later swelled up around the nail. I popped the blister and it drained A LOT!!! I did this several times...it just kept draining...especially after my 5 yr old stepped on my toe!! Well, I put antibiotic ointment on it and will do my next run Tuesday. I have a 50 mile training week planned. What I would like to know is how to wrap it so that it is not irritated...should I use a tape and gauze? I know the nail if going to fall off but I am wondering how to treat it in the meantime. I can picture blood and other gross stuff everywhere along with excrutiating pain. I am trying to avoid that scene if possible. Thanks.

I have the same problem with my toes, and nail. In fact my DH reminded me yesterday that I had promised to take a couple of weeks off and have it taken care of. The podiatrist (sp) told me it was a cyst, I pop mine and a clear oozing sticky stuff comes out. Anyway, I wrap mine with tape, the sticky kind or a bandaid, which usually comes off. It doesn't hurt too bad until I start picking at it, which I usually do. I am now getting it on the toe next to it. The doc told me I would have to take two weeks off, he would cut into the toe and clean out around the bone and have stitches in for a while and go without regular shoes for at least two weeks. In fact I was trying to convince myself today to call for an appt because my toe is black and blue. Oh, what to do.

I recommend using injinji socks. They are like wearing toe gloves. Cuts down on the friction between toes. Also when running more miles your feet swell up more(need bigger toe box). I wear a size larger that what my foot measures. I just ran 50 mile race Saturday and only have a minor blister. Before doing what I mentioned I had terrible water/blood blister problems. Hope that helps. Probably lots of other things you could do but I am just sharing what helped me.

Thanks for the help. I think I am going to tape the toe tomorrow to reduce the friction and pain. I just want to know what to do to help it fall off in the least painful way possible...cuz you know I am not going to stop running

My daughter had what we thought was a fungus growing under her toenail. She clippe the raised part of the nail down to the quick and water came out. So I guess that must have been a blister under her nail.. No blood, just a watery fluid. Last night her toe was throbbing. It doesn't feel hot or look infected, but she could hardly walk on it. I gave her Ibuprofen and had her put Bacitracin on it, and I'll check it when she gets up. Does this sort of thing tend to heal itself? How long? She has XC running camp next week. I'll look for the tape and the socks at the running store.

Yeah, I have big - big-toes and soon as I get into high mileage they tear the toenails off. I started taping them as soon as the mileage starts to get up there and haven't had any trouble since. Use the one-inch white hockey tape (not the shiny stuff). Take a strip about 3-4 inches long an wrap it over the top of the toe starting on the topd own by the knuckle and ending under the knuckle. This will hold the nail down. Then wrap a piece around the waist of the toe to hold the strap piece in place. I've done this for years and it rarely chaffes or falls off. This may keep the toe nail from falling off during your marathon. I lost one in a trail race once and it was a bit painful rolling around in the shoe! Watch the downhills. C-,

I had to drain mine like that for a couple days (about twice a day) and then it healed where there is no pain. You are doing the right thing. Just poke it with a pin, drain and use the cream. I hope she is okay for camp. Keep her nails cut short.

She woke up the next morning and the toe felt fine, but rest of the nail fell off. I took her to camp this morning and it wasn't bothering her at all. She clipped all her toenails before she left and brought the antibiotic ointment with her.

I have this right now too, it looks like a blood blister underneath my toenail. It seems like it's getting bigger every day. Now there's basically a big blister with a toenail over top of it. It really doesn't bother me that much, it just feels weird when I put pressure on that toe. If I just leave it like it is will it be okay, maybe even go away? I too envisioned a bloody end to it, with my toenail falling off and blood draining out all over my sock.

The darkness is (for me) a new toenail forming. I did poke it with a pin to release the pressure. I had this happen to two toes. One was worse than the other. Either way, I will be losing toenails...I think I will have one there underneath when the top one falls off. Not too bad...but draining the blister helps to make running bearable...Good luck.

I don't even notice it when I run. I'll just leave it alone for now, hopefully the blister won't get much bigger. It's now bigger than my actual toenail.
