As for the dehydration, on the bottle of immodium I take, it warns to drink plenty of clear liquids to avoid dehydration - but this may be because of the fluids lost due to diarrhea...

Hey fellow colonists, I'm still here keeping tabs on y'all. Colon has been OK for about a week, still eating the double fiber bread & taking an immodium every morning. I've been walking, though, so not as stressful on Mr. colon. I think I've been trying to walk too fast because the knees are still talking to me. AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it's not one thing, it's another! Thanks for listening to my whining! Have a great run/walk/crawl (me), everybody!

GI doc just called and the results of my test last Friday came are normal. She has me scheduled on June 6th to come back in to discuss further options.Back to the ol' drawing board!

Hey wherestheportajohn// normal is good. Know you want to get to the bottom of your problem but I guess all these tests are necessary to get you there. I'm sure it's frustrating, though, having to wait (again) until June. Don't give up heart, I know your persistance will pay off for you.

Today was a bad run for me. Went 1.5 miles before I decided that I wasn't emptied enough. Needless to say, I ran home, cleaned myself up, then went back out for another 5 miles. What a bummer!

shelly, ::bummer:: and I hear yaI had 3 pitstops on my six miler on Thursday...the last one wasn't quite in time. eeeeeewwwww In addition, I did EVERYTHING wrong that one could do when running in the heat for the first time this spring. (I really should have read the RW article on heat acclimation BEFORE heading out!!) LOL I went on a longish run with four big hills, at noon, in 72 degrees....three days before it had only been 40 degrees......the sun was out, I'd had immodium [dehydration] plus 3 pitstops [more dehydration] OY! No wonder my pace was 90 seconds per mile slower than my normal average, AAAAAHHHHHH!! *let's keep on truckin' and tryin' to get over this*

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this has already been mentioned...have any of you looked into the possibility of celiac disease (gluten intolerance)? Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley and maybe oats... Gluten intolerance (celiac sprue) causes a whole range of GI symptoms. It is a very overlooked and fairly common disorder -- not an allergy but more of an immune disease.Check it out at www.celiac.com Good luck, Susan

Well, I attempted 10 miles for the 3rd week in a row... and predictably, right around the 7-8 mile mark, familiar feelings of needing a restroom came around again. Only I was running with a friend... and there wasn't a restroom nearby. I faked a stomach ache, so that I could walk the rest of the way home... I was pretty embarrassed. But I made it home... thankfully. No cramps anymore since I take the immodium... but still have the pressure and urges to go mid-run... and starts to become VERY urgent if I don't slow down to a walk. Even then, if I'm too far from home, the walking will even trigger it One other problem that might help is that I can't figure out how to "empty" before I go. Especially since it's getting warmer, I need to go earlier in the day... what can I do/take to clear the system before I leave? Anyone have anything really useful? ------------------ * Carrie * www.carrie.cc/running www.carrie.cc me@carrie.cc

FYI I cut out milk before my long runs and it has definitely helped although I can otherwise drink milk at other times with no problems.A questions...I am training for a marathon and start to get stomach cramps at about 15-17 miles. Not the kind of "have to go the bathroom cramps" just annoying cramps that I can still run through. Any thoughts? I usually have a power gel at 7 miles and then every 5 miles after that. thanks

Carrie-I always drink coffee at least an hour before my run. The hot liquid usually empties out most of what's in me. Then I go on a warmup run of 1.5 miles, then home for a bathroom break. After that, usually (if I'm not having a UC flare) I am able to finish any length of run that I want to. I am starting a flare-up right now, so I don't know if I'll be able to run any long distances. I am going to keep going until I have to stop. Last time I had a flare up, I started walking on my running days. Seems to take forever to finish walking 7 or 10 miles! ------------------ My Profile

Hmm... I've tried a "warm up" run before.. but unless my warm up is 6 miles... the first miles never have an effect. My friend wants to come running with me every Sunday, and I don't know a polite way to say No... I'd love company, but I'm really, really embarrassed about needing to use the restroom. I don't own a coffee maker, so I'll have to try some instant stuff, or start making Sunday morning trips to the coffee shop down the street. Maybe I could jog down there, get some coffee, jog home, and hope it works Is it the caffine that does it? Is there something else I could substitute for coffee? Thanks for the suggestions... it helps so much to know there are other understanding people out there ------------------ * Carrie * www.carrie.cc/running www.carrie.cc me@carrie.cc

Carrie-I think any hot liquid would do. Just make sure to wait at least an hour before you run.

ann, How are the knees this week? Are you running yet, or waiting till the end of May?carrie, I've really backed off on coffee, but if it helps you....then give it a shot. I agree with the post about any warm/hot liquid to get things moving. I had a rare event today: 4 treadmill miles at a good clip with no pit stops. Don't think I did anything different; just dumb luck. LOL a special "hello" to my friends from CTG [inside joke]

Hey Karen, I'm not running until the end of May, but my walking is really coming along...7 mi yesterday, 7 mi today. Knees are much better...Congratulations on a care free 4 miles! (Although if you're like me, you probably worried about it the whole run!)....Have a great rest of the week everybody...Hope your colon is good to you.

Think I'm up for a bad run today. I'll let you know what happens. My stomach is very yucky, and I am trying to empty it out. I'll get started late in this hot, humid Fl weather. Also, I hurt my little toe yesterday and it is killing me. I need to go at least 10 miles today to get my week started (I try to run 30 miles per week.) I may end up walking quite a bit--I'll see what happens.------------------ My Profile

shelly, best of luck on making today's run work for youkeep posting and venting/we'll keep supporting one another! This morning I woke up in a state of paranoia again because I have this problem that comes back to haunt me every couple of weeks: I won't run outside on the weekends; I'm too embarrassed when I come home and have to 'clean up' when my kids & DH are around [weekends and vacations] the options are to run in the dark at 4:30am [when I can make pit stops anywhere along the route and not have accidents] or to run on my basement TM---> it's pretty boring and makes me angry that I feel like a prisoner of my colon! today I was exhausted from wkaing up MANY times during the night [snoring DH, teens coming home at all hours, me peeing 1-2x at night!] so I swore at myself and rolled over at 4:30...zzzzzzzz so, it'll be the TM for me today; gotta do a fast 4 or an easy 6and there's nothing on TV!!! EEEEEEKKKK!!!! ------------------ On Wisconsin TurtleXing

Hey-What about the night sweats? That also keeps me up at night.Went 11, but stopped at mile 1.5 (my usual warmup), mile 5, and then walked back home at 10.5 because of stomach cramps, not to mention the sore little toe. ------------------ My Profile

good lord, night sweats....YES...plus hot flashes...HAHAHAwe're a mess, eh? WTG on the 11 miler....good for you to find places to stop. so after 1.5, you typically stop at home? or do you have somewhere on your route to go? I did 4 fast + one cooldown on the TM--felt strong today My pitstop came after mile two. fwiw, my fast is turtlesque. LOL and OY! Karen, I actually stop at home, then run in and out the streets and go back home again. Our streets are .5 miles, and I wear a Forerunner, so that's how I can measure how far I'm going when I turn to go back home. I pretty much know how far all the streets are from home. My kids and husband know everything, since I have lived with UC for 20 years. There have been times when I have come home with poop all down my legs and had to yell for them to get me a towel. My cell phone isn't small enough to fit into my water pouch, or I would take that with me to call them when I feel it coming on. The only thing good about this happening is the weight loss! ------------------ My Profile

g'morning...insomniac here [have been up on and off since 2] and I think it's partially due to the nasty run I had yesterday.(AMAZINGLY not because of gut problems...yes, I had to make a pitstop...duh) This was one of those 5 milers that felt like 20!! OY! Heavy legs, high heartrate, uneven breathing, overheated, dehydrated, yadda yadda I realize that everyone has days like this, but it still doesn't make it easy to accept. Today is an unplanned rest day from running/biking; I'll go pump some upper body iron to get the frustrations out. How are the rest of you doing? Ann? Shelley? Carrie? and all that I've forgotten! LOL cheers

Karen-I have 19 miles so far this week. It has been so hot here. It hit the 90's yesterday, and I am running after work during the week at about 4:30. I rarely have colon issues late in the afternoon, since they are short runs (3-5 miles.) Monday I had a bit of a problem, but made it home without any dilemmas.

shelley, WTG on getting in those miles! the heat must be a b!tch down by you....I cannot handle it, and will be running at 4:30am sooner than I think!I am struggling with mileage; never seem to get in more than 18-20/wk--> I love to do other things and haven't figured out how to increase running miles without getting hurt/or compromising other parts of my life. today, for example, my legs are killing me, so a run isn't even in the ballpark as far as my workout plans

I think my body just naturally decided I had been training hard, and wanted a break... I was really run down this week and didn't get in my long run on Sunday. I had been upping my mileage for four weeks straight, instead of going up, backing off, and then going up again. So apparently my body had enough! Anyway, I am racing a 10k this Sunday, so I will run that, and then afterwards get in another 4 miles to get in my "10" for that day... but I don't think it officially counts as a long run since I won't have done them all at once. So I won't know until next Sunday if I have solved my "problems" yet. I'm turning down offers for running partners until I do... that last run with my friend was WAY too embarrassing. I faked that I was naseaus and had to throw up to save some embarrassment but I am not entirely sure he believed me. I think he thinks I'm one of those people that are big wusses when it comes to long runs Oh, if he only knew... But I did find a route that has restrooms along the way!! So now I can attempt a long run without freaking out that there's no where for me to go! I'm pretty excited about that... I'd be happy getting a routine in where a pit stop was mandatory... I can work that into my marathon training, and figure out where the pitstops are along the marathon route That's if I can't cure my issues completely... the Immodium relieves my cramps but really does make me naseous. I haven't tried not eating before... so that's my next goal. No alcohol the night before, "empty" out, and a small snack like toast or a banana before I go out. Wish me luck that it works! ------------------ * Carrie * www.carrie.cc/running www.carrie.cc me@carrie.cc
