The Colon rules! You guys have been so helpful. I'm going to get metamucil & slippery elm for my colon, then I'm getting magnesium & quinine for my achy stiff legs.(see other thread). THEN I will be in tip top shape, I will BE Super-Ann. I will run at 9 min pace (don't laugh, that's fast for me). I will run an entire marathon without walking or pain and I will get younger every year! Yes, I have a dream! Please don't wake me!

I've been searching and searching for a thread like this--YES! I have this problem -- loss of bowel control (incontinence, too), blood, and HORRIBLE cramping after a long run. YES, I can say it is related to having kids vaginally! Did anyone else develop hemorroids w/their pregnancies? I did, and I think this issue may be indirectly related.I'm on Naproxin (Aleve) for hip bursitis. Does this complicate matters? Should I be using something else? I'm going to try the Immodium. I can say that as I get more in shape and stronger, things get better. Especially the incontinence. Cold weather makes it worse. THANK YOU THANK YOU!! for posting.

I don't suffer from this debilitating condition, but have had the occasional bout of gastrointestinal distress out on a run. However, I was just curious about something for those of you that struggle with this, does it occur on rest days as well? Or, is it running induced only? All I can say is I am totally impressed that you are still committed to running knowing full well that you are going to have problems along the way. I think I might have switched activities by now. I hope you can figure out something that will give you respite from this condition.

hey graingirl, I think some of us have problems only when we run, others at any time. I fall into the latter category. The immodium has helped me immensely, but I still have problems. (...We'll just leave it at that!). For a time I had to stop going out to eat altogether. My husband was either at the table eating alone while I was in the bathroom, or I was such a wreck about maybe having a problem I couldn't enjoy myself. My colon starts to spasm at times after I eat (sometimes while I'm chewing so I really think there's a mental component). Jrocks, another addition to our flock! One nice aside to having the episiotomy-induced issues is that you can blame it on your kids! I remind my third daughter all the time that they had to split me in two to get her little 9 lbs., 10 oz bod out of me! It's good for applying guilt when necessary!

TGIF rest day here, but I am keeping with my routine to prep for tomorrow's 'LSD' morning run [my long runs are like most of your mid-distance runs] ann, thnx the meta + one imodium have slowed things down....I still have to pit stop, but it hasnt been MULTIPLE stops this week. The sense of urgency/incontinence concerns have decreased from five alarm status to three alarm! LOL To our new poster: I'm another mom with the episiodomy/foreceps nasty, brutal delivery too...dang that 19 yr old!

I hope everyone here is feeling in very good company today -- Paula Radcliffe has positively glorified the emergency pit stop! I heard about that and thought of this thread ...

quote: Originally posted by myredpen: Hmm... sounds frighteningly similar to my first half marathon, after which I spent the night in the emergency room because I was going to the bathroom and passing blood. The doctors at the time told me it was eschemic colotis, a condition that sometimes occurs in long-distance runners, especially women, and was compounded by the fact that I took Aleve the night before. I left the hospital thinking that it was a one time thing. I've gotten sick every long run since then (and even on some 5-6 milers) and often remain too sick to eat for hours after a run. The blood is gone but the need to go is unbearable and has caused many an uncomfortable mile. I've tried varying my diet, cutting out ibuprophen, not eating anything for HOURs before, etc. Nothing worked. That was until about 2 months ago. I read an article about "runner's trots" that described me exactly. The article said that the condition happens in a high percentage of female runners at some point in their lives. It recommended taking Immodium AD an hour or so before a long run. Not to sound like an advertisement, but Immodium AD changed my life. I finished my first post-running-trots (sorry!) half mary yesterday and immediately went out for nachos and a big lunch. My stomach feels great! Hope your problem can be solved much more quickly and easier than mine -- but try Immodium if you're desperate. It works!
I had the exact same experience and used the same remedy. It's great!!!

Immodium is a wonder drug for me too! I also have discovered "double fiber" bread by Nature's Own and that also seems to improve things. I've had no "problems" in the past week since I started eating it. Could be coincidence but you never know with these things.

ann, GREAT that the imodium is working for you....refresh my old-lady memory: are you taking ONE or TWO an hour before *all* of your runs? I have another dilema... Now that summer is coming, and since I don't tolerate heat AT ALL, I'm training myself to get up and out the door a couple morings during the work week at 4-4:15am. However, I can't take imodium first thing in the morning with this schedule... Yesterday, I 'went' once before heading out at 4am, yet STILL needed a pit during my wimpy little 3.4 miler my Q is: should I take a couple before bed? or in the late evening?

Hey karen, I take one with my coffee every morning.( I don't do ANYTHING before my coffee!). The coffee really works on my system. I know if I have 2 cups, I'm in the bathroom. If I want to have extra insurance I take a second one the night before as I go to bed. In addition, before my 2 marathons I took 2 the morning of the race (either together or spaced a half hr or so apart I really can't remember!) Hope this works for you! And don't call your 3.4 mi wimpy! Remember, a lot of people wouldn't be out there at all if they had to deal with our problems! You're doing phenomenally, don't doubt that.

How's the colon today, y'all?Ran a 1/2 mary sunday, took immodium 1 hour before the run, and guess what? NO problems, (and I ran really hard).......also, NO cramping afterwards. Wonderful!! And, WE ARE in good company. Anyone remember Uta Pippig's very embarrassing problem at the boston marathon in maybe,,,,,,oh,,,,,,,,1995? Don't quote me on the year for that one, but it was sometime in the 90s. We think we have it rough!!!! try broadcasting it all over the world!

double fiber bread (5 g fiber!) by Nature's Own is continuing to work well for me! The jury is still out but I really do think it's helping. I'll keep you posted.

Good for me---> I currently only eat high fiber bread, so I don't think that change will do me any good...but I'm glad it is working for you, ann!

well, the colon ruled my run yet again today even with the addition of the imodium ....I still had 2 pit stops during a 6.5 miler. *ARGH*being the po0o detective that I am, I think it must have been partially caused by the Weight Watchers 2 pt sundae I had for dessert....milk product + sucralose sweetener [oops, and I didn't take my lactaid with it]
