Boy am I glad to have found this board. I have been on coolrunning for over a year and never knew it was here.I just finished reading every post. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 14 years ago. Had a small bowel recection 3 yrs ago, 2 ft of small intestine with 5" of colon removed as well. Went into a remission up until about a month ago. I have the worst back/flank/stomach, all right sided. I have not run more than a mile in a month and I am loosing it! My MD has me on Pentasa. Last week they put me on the Medrol dose pack thinking I had a pulled muscle and started making me go to physical therapy. I have pain and D, watery, after any food. I have never had back pain like this before and was wondering if anyone has back issue pain with this. I can say up until a month ago I really had no problems but was only running about 15 miles a week. Right now I don't feel good enough to do anything. Any ideas on the back pain would be greatly appreciated. Heather

Heather-I can tell you when my UC is really flaring, my lower back hurts pretty bad. I don't think it's as much as you are describing, but it could be from all the D. Are you able to walk without pooping problems?

Hi. I basically have pain today only. Only went to the bathroon twice today. Thank god. I wanted to run today but I am scared to run if my stomach hurts, I always think it is just going to rip apart so I get scared. I know it is VERY unlikley to happen but I get freaked out. I ran down my street today and back about 2/10 of a mile and I didn't have any issues and then my husband was like, what are you doing??? so I decided to just not push it.If anyone runs with pain let me know. What is the worst that can happen I have to walk? Anyway, my plan is if it feels somewhat better tomorrow I am going to just try to get a mile or so out of it Oh, thankfully I have not had the going while running issue before. Heather

I have had specialists who ARE athletes, yet they are confounded by my situation. <snort> Had a nice 6 miler this morn in perfect fall pre-dawn conditions. Yes, I am still relegated to the dark or the TM. (had 2 pitstops in case anyone is counting) Have a great weekend, and GO BADGERS
Well, that figures......confuse the running docs.....I'm so sorry to hear that. But I'm excited for you on your 6 miler with only 2 pitstops!!! Whoohoo. Keep going....well, keep running is what I mean!LOL Since the weather has gotten cold I have had no issues! Nothing, nada, zip! Nice to be back to normal running. I plan on my first full marathon in 25 weeks. Wish me luck all.... Run strong!

I'm glad I found this thread and can now share my thoughts without grossing anybody out.I started the couch to 5k program 7 weeks ago, on days that I didn't run I would walk for 3 - 5 miles at a 4.0 mph pace. I am really enjoying the running. Several times throughout my walks and now my runs I have felt "the urge" and when I got home there was a lot of bloody diarrhea. Now, I'm a nurse and I wasn't too concerned because I thought, as another poster thought, it was just internal hemorrhoids that were being irritated. My annual physical was last week and the dr ordered a colonoscopy. Prior to my exam I talked with the GI doc and explained to him what was going on. He dx the problem immediately as gut ischemia. It's caused because the lungs, heart, and large muscles (legs) need the blood supply so the blood is pulled away from the colon. Being without blood irritates the colon and causes it to bleed. When it bleeds it causes an excess amount of fluid (blood) in the colon and our body wants to expel it (fast). He told me that if it continues it could cause the colon's healthy tissue to die. So his recommendation to me was not to quit running but to work with my body and to find out what I can do without this symptom presenting itself. I was on week 7 D1 of the program but I backed way down and ran for 6 minutes this morning and no blood!!! Yeah. I think I will just increase the time from here and see what I can do. I run at home on the treadmill so I don't have to hit the bushes and will just have to pause the tm. My goal to to start running outside in the spring, everyone here says once you run outside running on the tm is harder not physically but mentally. It was hard to realize that I'm not able to move forward with the program like I wanted to do, but I don't want problems with my colon either. All comments or suggestions for moving on would be appreciated. Barb

Barb-Interesting details by your dr. Did he have any suggestion on how to continue running with the problem? Chuck-Any dx yet on your colon issues? Portajohn-I am back to running after all my foot problems. Well, actually walk/run now. Still doing the run 2 miles, then come home to empty stomach just in case, but no issue so far.

Shelly.....my doc idea of solving the problem is not to run any more!!! While I was under sedation he gave my husband quite a list of reasons why I should not run...including hip, knee, foot, (stress on all the joints) wearing them out, the cost of replacement of the same, how the elite runners are rich and have the money to replace their joints but the average joe doesn't, on and on......husband gave me the talk on Sunday on how I should "rethink" this whole running thing....ugh!!!Sunday and today I ran 25 minutes, had some of the issues but I am going to continue and see if it gets better. Today the issue appeared 90 minutes after the run, not during and not right after. Maybe it's getting better, or maybe I am fooling myself. Karen, according to your name you have some colon issues, do they ever get better? Shelly, what kind of foot problems do you have? Barb

Barb-I would change drs!! I did, when mine asked me why I would even consider running 40 miles per week. My foot problems are a neuroma (which I had 7 alcohol injections to kill the nerve,) and now a bunion. I can't run much, but anything feels like I accomplished something.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by happybarb: [B]Shelly.....my doc idea of solving the problem is not to run any more!!! This type of crap (excuse the pun) so irritates me. Barb---go to a doctor that runs.....they aren't so anxious to tell you not to run to solve the problem.
For anyone else interested.... http://runningtimes.com/rt/articles/?id=12326 Excellent article about "runner's trots." I see that one of the contributors to this lovely issue is heat---and I have noticed that I really haven't had the problem this fall since we have had cooler temps. Yippee!!!! I hope the article can sheds some light for those who suffer with this dreadful pitfall in running!! Off and running... Jen
