God, I love this thread. I'm a new runner (just started in August) training for my first marathon in January. I also have no colon. I had a total colectomy almost 10 years ago (wow ... time flies when you're stuck on the crapper). I cannot tell you all how much I identified with every post I've read on this board. It might just become my new favorite thread. I haven't really had a ton of issues with my lack-of-colon and running, but I just wanted to say hey and throw out my support to everyone who has to deal with various IBS/Crohn's issues!!Mandi

Mandi-Good luck! I am glad you have found this thread helpful to you. Was your colon removed due to Crohn's?------------------ My Profile

Ulcerative Colitis, actually. But I keep getting infections in my inside pouch (pouchitis) that makes the dr.s think it might have been Crohn's after all. But I've been more or less healthy for the majority of those ten years, so the distinction of Crohn's vs. Colitis doesn't matter a ton to me.

Mandi-I have UC also. I have had it for over 20 years, but luckily, it hasn't been bad enough to warrant any hospital stays. I take Colozal now daily, and also Prozac. Good luck on your running adventure.

g'morn mandi and shellywelcome mandi!! More power to ya...I'm impressed that you're out there running. my colon was in fine FINE rebellious form during my 4:30am run today....*sheesh*...the T-day meal wasn't sitting well, that's for sure. I stopped counting the pitstops, but am pretty sure it was 4x in 6 miles. OY!

WTPJ -- I am so sorry! I remember how bad it got for me before the colon removal and I can't imagine trying to run through colon tantrums. It was hard enough for me to sit through a movie, let alone trying to run. I haven't read through this whole thread, so I apologize if you've already covered this, but have you been to a GI doc? It just seems incomprehensible to me that there's nothing that can be done to help you! I wish I had some advice or words of wisdom, but I'm crap (pun intended) at that kind of stuff. Good luck!

Karen-So sorry to hear about your running woes. I was hoping you were getting better. Probably was the Thanksgiving dinner going through you. Weren't you going to try the Activa yogurt?

I hope that the T-day GI outrage has subsided for all you who have suffered recently.Hope the abrupt shift in weather conditions hasn't affected too many of you adversely. An update on the job offer: The interview went well on Tuesday. I heard from HR this afternoon, but missed the call. Looks good!!!

Hey yogini! Good vibes and fingers Xd for the position. shelly, I have not yet tried the Activia yogurt. (Is it WWer points friendly? I love my 1 pt yorgurt!) I'll check out the label next time I'm doing a grocery run. Speaking of running: nothing new here. Still plodding out the miles on the TM to avoid 'issues' when outdoors. Last week I had at least one glorious outdoor run [in the dark]...glorious in that the legs/lungs felt good and the multiple pitstops didn't pissss me off or get into my head the way they usually do. ~happy healthy holiday season to all the 'Colon-ists'~

Pheewwww!I couldn't find the thread for a minute there and wondered if somehow we'd been archived. WPTJ, good job with mind over matter! I haven't noticed a tremendous difference with the Dannon Immune yogurt drink...No issues during runs, but before and after...watch out! I should get an offer on Monday afternoon. So Psyched!!! Ev

Good luck, Yogini!!Well, it looks like I'm going in for another colonoscopy. I'm due for one, it's been about 2 or 3 years. Since my flare has subsided, I guess I'd better do it while I'm off for Xmas break. Plus the GI sent me another letter about it. I hate that prep!!

Hi All! It's nice to know I'm not alone with all this. I have BAD stomach cramps/bathroom pains after running but I don't have to make any pit stops while running. I'm wondering if this is just because I don't run for extremely long distances? (4 miles at the most right now)

jlforbess, How hard are you running those 4 miles? Are you sufficiently hydrated? The nerves of waiting to hear about the TriPath job got to me on my run yesterday. Can't explain the urgent pitstop any other way since all I ate was toast, water and some crackers and cheese in the hours before my run. Lots of trees but not a lot of cover. Good news is: I got the job! Very psyched to be returning to full time work!

Not hard at all as far as I know, usually between 5 and 5.5 miles. I usually drink between 40 and 50 ounces before I go to the gym and then I drink about 20 to 30 afterwards. Does this sound like enough?

g'mornYOGINI!! Woo-hoo on getting the job! That good news outweighs the pitstops, eh? to our new poster, I can't help with suggestions for your issue...I don't have post-run problems [I kind of wish that was the case tho] OY! Shelley, How's the PF? Did you completely switch over from running to biking? Have you purchased a new road bike? Cheers

I hoping you all can impart some of your wisdom on me... I get pretty major bloating and stomach cramps after most (but not all) runs (3-6mi usually). It usually kicks in about 30min-1hr afterward, but can be immediate. I usually feel like I have to go a lot, but there's just gas and a little bit of mucous (sorry!) most of the time. Sometimes I have the full-on runs. This whole ordeal can last for several hours. Also, every once in awhile I have to dive off of the treadmill and run to the bathroom. I'm just wondering if this sounds like a bad thing to you... I don't have any food intolerances that I'm aware of, and it seems to happen regardless of what I eat and how long I wait after eating before I run. I sure would like to find a way to stop it!

vzchokie-Sounds like you have the runner's trots. Have you gone to a GI to make sure you don't have any intestinal problems? You may want to do that. Read back and you will see that your problem is very much in common to the rest of the people here.Karen-I just got my new bike! It is so sweet. I rode it for the first time this morning. As far as the PF, I haven't been running much at all. Maybe 5 or 10 miles per week. I have a colonoscopy scheduled on Jan 4. Yuck! The PA in the office is a friend of mine, so he is going to let me get something other than the stuff you have to mix with Gatorade. I prefer the little bottle of nasty stuff ( Fleet phospho soda) you drink all at once instead of having to drink the dreaded other stuff all day long.

Hi everyone, I was turned on to this thread by someone in the nutrition forum. I was just diagnosed with some nonspecific colitis (colon is inflammed, no ulceration, no infection), and the doc threw me on some anti-inflammatories and anti-spasmodics for now. He's also put me on the low fiber/low GI diet, and I'm really struggling with my energy levels at this point without getting my daily runs in. I take naps almost every day now, which is starting to interfere with work, etc. I noticed we have some Crohn's/UC folks here- how do you guys/girls keep your energy levels up??Thanks! Caroline

Hi Caroline -I don't have colitis, but have found that large amounts of fiber (cereal, breads, grains, etc) really help my irritable bowel. I think Shelley M said that they did not help her, but it's a thought if the other isn't working. Good luck Steph

Caroline-I have UC. The only time my energy is way down is when I have a full blown flare-up, because of the dehydration from all the bathroom visits. When that happens, I can't run at all.I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year. I am on liquids tomorrow to prep for a colonoscopy Thursday. Whoppee!! NOT!!

Porta- All clear this round. I had a horrible reaction to the IV, though. When I got home, I couldn't even eat ice. I was finally up at 4:00. Now I'm back to normal. I have to go back in 2 years for another. Thanks for asking!

I cannot believe I've found a site that talks exactly about my issues. This is one of the most embarassing topics, but I think I can't talk about it openly here....cause most seem to have a similar problem. I had the worst experience of my life this weekend when running my 11th marathon which included 7 trips to the porta-potty and ended in me running in two pairs of tights (thank god it was freezing) and crossing the finish line with what was the bloodiest diarrhea of I ever seen or heard of. I was horrified when I spent the next 45 minutes in a porta-potty at the finish trying to clean up enough to get back to the hotel. Fortunately I wasn't weak or incoherant. (I gave up stopping at the porta-johns cause it didn't really help and ran the last 3 - 4 miles just putting one foot in front of the other). My normal 3:30 was a 4:02...I've had issues before, but never the volume or the blood. Also, considering I ran with unpleasant matter next to the skin, I've got the worst case of diaper rash I've ever seen...so it's Desitan and not being able to sit down. Rather than the post-race shower being a wonderful experience I was yelling from the horrible burning. Do have an appointment with the Doc. tomorrow...probably one of those awful colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy things will be necessary. So..in my search today trying to find out what happened I came across this site and was ecstatic to learn I'm not alone. I really have to find some solution as I'm running Boston again in April and want it to be a reasonable experience. Any thoughts or comments aside from "why didn't you just stop?!" Thanks.

Hi Jasd - I'm not as experienced a runner as you, but it seems to me from my own troubles and reading this thread that solution is different for everyone and once you have ruled out a problem, you just have to experiment to see what works for you. FWIW - Lots of insoluble fiber helps me, but not others. Some folks can take immodium. I also have cut way down on my veggie and meat intake because these things upset my intestines and it seems to help if I maintain a firmer than average stool. I found that for me pre-run enemas to "empty-out" before running only caused more GI action and dehydration issues. Good luck with your sigmoidoscopy - I've heard tale that they are not as bad as the preparations for them, but it's never fun when someone is messing with your bum. We've all done that post-run cleanup and it sucks. I'm sorry for your troubles. Steph
