Hi,I don't suffer from the the kind of problems most of you seem to be dealing with, thank god, but I do have a nervous stomach, meaning I get butterflies in my stomach when I'm nervous. It's happened a couple times that I had to make pit stop behind some bushes... Anyway... I'm running my first marathon on Sept. 3 and wanted to ask if any of you have experience with enemas to clean out before a long race. I'm probably going to do it no matter what but I'm not sure if I should do it the night before or the morning of the race. Any suggestions much appreciated, thank you :-)

Hi Effzee - I have done the enemas before races with fairly good results. It definitely gave me some piece of mind. My results in training have not been as consistent. Sometimes the nerves of the race help to empty out before the race, I think. Regardless, try the enemas out in your training before the race to be sure that they don't just make your system "upset" because that would be even worse than the original problem. Anyway, I don't know how long your race is, but be sure to hydrate and fuel (during and post-run) so that you don't get too low on water or electrolytes because of the enema. I forgot to answer - I do the enema in the morning pre-run. Steph

I would definitly give it a try before doing it for a race. Sounds like a great idea. Let us know.

O, I have done enemas from time to time in conjunction with my seasonal "cleansings" - fasting and meditating - so I know the effect is a positive one on me. Or at least, it won't upset my system.I'll be doing my start of winter fast at the end of October. Yeah, I was wondering about hydration. As far as I know, the colon absorbs much, much more water than any other organ. So, maybe an enema is even a good enhancement to hydration (?). My race is a marathon, my first, on Sept. 3 :-)

Hi Effzee - Because an enema cleanses the colon prior to the "normal time" the stuff in there would pass, it clears out before the water absorbtion has occurred. Therefore, enemas are very dehydrating. Probably a water-only enema is not as dehydrating as one with salts in it but it's also not as effective in my experience. Steph

Wow, what a glorious thread. So much information, it is amazing. One thing about the Immodium for me, is that it leaves me a little high, a little tired, a little drowsy. Does it do that to anyone else?

I can't answer the Immodium question, since I don't take it. But several other people here probably can.I am still having an awful ulcerative colitis flare. I was able to run 2 miles yesterday before I biked. I was afraid to go any farther, not just because of my UC, but also my PF. Still no problems with the stomach on bike rides.

*bump*g'morning, Colon-ists! For your reading pleasure, here's some interesting WTPJ news: As earlier posted, I was taking Align in hopes of dealing with my 'symptoms'. I took it for 3-4 months, with some minor improvements [unfortunately, I was still having my wtpj issues during daily runs] I wasn't happy with the cost and the fact that it really wasn't working, so I switched to another product: Digestive Advantage for IBS...one chewable each morning. Even tho my GI doc did not diagnose IBS, I thought perhaps this might do the trick. Interestingly [and with much joy], after 2-3 weeks, I've noticed a marked decrease in urgency needs when running. No, the wtpj issue has not disappeared....but I have had SIGNIFICANTLY less need to stop/urgency/etc during several runs recently. Woot!! just thought some of you might be interested http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100102&navAction=jump&navCount=0&id=prod844605

Congratulations on finding something that helps WTPJ!My stomach has been doing a lot better in terms of urgency lately, though the blood still occurs post hard effort and or long runs. Only connection I can make is more yoga. Might be a weak link, but I've been teaching regularly since January (1 to 2 classes a week) and things have been better. Note: The gentle Integral yoga I teach does everything R, Center, L to keep the GI flow going the way it should be. Hmmm.

Yay! Glad the new meds are working for you!By the way, my sister swears by benefiber - 1 serving a day, stirred into her coffee has gotten rid of her IBS.

Hey, wherestheportojohn--that's awesome!! I've read through parts of this thread from time to time and so am somewhat familiar with your story. A significant improvement is significant, indeed! Take care!

gretchie lou, Thanks for you kind words. I'm still plugging away at this...espceially the heavy mental toll it takes each time I run. The problem isn't gone, but it has improved. For months I've lived like a mole--->running in the privacy of the dark or in the basement on my TM, just to avoid the humiliation of my WTPJ issues. Yesterday that monster struck again...I couldn't get myself outside on a LOVELY fall day. *sigh* I did my 6 miles on the TM to avoid embarrassment. cheers ~karen

Karen-Sorry to hear you are not getting better. On the other hand, I think my UC flare is beginning to subside. I just started running again yesterday, after a 12 week break because of PF. I only went 5 miles. No stomach problems (I waited 2 hrs after my coffee just in case,) but at mile 4 my foot and knee started hurting. I won't run again until Wed. and maybe just go 2. I know the colon won't be an issue, since it will be an afternoon run, hopefully.Best of luck to all my fellow sufferers!! ------------------ My Profile

hiya shelley....good to read that you're at least back out there. Do you wear custom orthotics for the pf? Glad the flare-ups are gone for now too!I'm same old same old...nothing new to report. I've been trying to extend my runs and go for longer outings, but the issues are keeping me reined in. Other than that, I'm feeling good. Happy healthy running to all colon-ists!

Hey, Karen-I don't use custom orthodics. Just the ones the pod sold me. They are okay in my New Balance 1222.

Yeah! I'm glad that you are back running. : )I'm still hobbling because of the ITBS so I've not run long enough to worry about the potty issues and I'm staying in the flats so I'm never more than 2 houses away from home. Boring, but very convenient.

g'mornGlad to read that you guys are doing well with your running. I had one of the most humiliating horrific episodes EVER last week [and it was during a 5 miler!?!?!?!?!] I'll spare the details since it would be TMI; but let's just say that it has driven me back inside on the TM. <carry on>

I'm so sorry WTPJ. That feeling is just horrible. Hope that you are doing better now. My dumb ITB is letting me go 3 miles (still in the flats) so that is a big improvement, but going to make my half in January a big run/walk. ick.

My running is so irregular...as is my diet, I'll just do the immunity yogurt drink as some sort of regular thing, and keep you posted.Job interview the week at after T-day...Lots of traveling. Will be good for our bank account and probably detrimental to running and eating! Lets hear it for a Garmin for Xmas!

yogini, Good luck on the interview. Mind if I ask what type of work?My running & other workouts will be nice and consistent this week, as we don't travel for T-day. All family members live within 8 miles of each other! [small family] cheers ------------------ On Wisconsin TurtleXing

I have a BS in Bio, a certificate in Cytotechnology, and a recently earned MA in Adult Ed.Most recently I was the Ed. Coordinator at the RI school of Cytotechnology and a Cytotech at on of the sponsoring hospitals. The position I'm interviewing for is as a Cytology Applications Specialist with TriPath Imaging. I'd be supporting labs in NC, VA and MD that have the TriPath system(s) in place for their pap test caseload.
