OMG I had NO idea that so many people had the same problem as I. I was training for the country music marathon then changed to the 1/2 because of my IBS problems. I've promised myself that I will not let this problem stop me from achieving this goal.

It's great that we "poopers' have united for support. Maybe I'll see you guys one day at the porta johns

I am planning to try the Imodium for the first time this weekend on a long run.

Fayelynn,

Upper left quandrant sounds like the end of your transverse colon, beginning of your descendng colon.

Here's a series of yoga stretches that will bring flex to your hamstrings and maybe help with the 'bubble'

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor.
Bring your right leg into your torso and hug (with your arms) behind the thigh or over the shin.
Straighten out the left and push through the left heel.
Hold this for 2 or 3 breaths.
Release the right leg.

Bend both knees and hug your legs (with your arms) into your torso behind the thighs or over the shins. Bring your nose up between your knees and rock and roll to massage your lower back and kidneys. (This is actually called 'wind releasing pose')

Release your legs and return to a bent knee, feet on the floor position.

Bring your left leg into your torso and hug (with your arms) behind the thigh or over the shin.
Straighten out the left and push through the right heel.
Hold this for 2 or 3 breaths.

Release, straighten both legs, let your toes fall out, palms turn up, close your eyes and take a brief rest before you head out on your run.

The Right, Center, Left is important, it keeps things moving in the 'right' direction.

Good luck!

I left the hospital thinking that it was a one time thing.

I've gotten sick every long run since then (and even on some 5-6 milers) and often remain too sick to eat for hours after a run. The blood is gone but the need to go is unbearable and has caused many an uncomfortable mile. I've tried varying my diet, cutting out ibuprophen, not eating anything for HOURs before, etc. Nothing worked.

Do you have any more information on the connection with passing blood and taking Aleve? I only run about 20 miles a week and recently started taking Aleve a little more regularly the mornings after I run and have noticed a little blood... Not sure if I should be worried or not...

Check out this website. At the bottom it discusses uses for Healthy Trinity. I have found it to help by minimizing the problem. As for completely getting rid of it...I doubt that will ever happen. I just feel like I retain more nutrients when I take them. I have been told it may take a couple months for it to kick in. This site is super expensive though. There are cheaper places to buy from....if you are interested.

*poopers unite*

I did 9.75 and had to dive into bushes 3x.
OY!
on top of that, it was hot [to me] and I probably didn't drink enough on the run...legs felt like lead the ENTIRE time

<big sigh>

Thanks yogini! I'll give it a shot. It does seem to be helping if I wait to run about 3 hours after eating - even though by then I'm already hungry!

Ah,
Eating and running....such lovely things on their own...it is in combination that they bring us trouble.
Lately I've had good luck with eating these three things so I'm not starving when I head out, nor do they cause unplanned stops. (So far.)

Barbara's honey rice puffins cereal (dry-carbs only!)
a banana (binding properties)
Luna bar (!) First bar I've been able to tolerate before a run.. I use one before a long run so nothing is getting jostled about too much.

hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.....of course

.

Funny - Luna bars are the only ones I can tolerate as well. I'm allergic to milk - thought I was intolerant for years so I never avoided whey or casein (in practically all bars), once I found out it was an actually allergy my bar search was on. Luna bars seem to be the only one's I can find out there that are tolerable. Chai tea is my favorite!

Virego-I feel for your hubby! I've had many a cort-enema and mesalamine enemas over the years. I absolutely hate them! Tell your husband to hang in there.

Spanky-Thanks for the Healthy Trinity info.

Porta-So sorry you had to take a dive in the woods. Just when you thought things were going better.

I forget who asked about eating before. If you are not going to be running over 3 or 4 miles, it might be better if you don't eat. I don't even eat if I'm running over 10 miles. I'm too afraid of what might happen. As I've said before, I just have coffee about an hour or 2 before a run (morning run, that is.) My PM runs are usually around 4:30 or 5:00, a safe time after my lunch. Lunch is usually just cottage cheese or a small salad.

Wow shelley, when do you eat?
Do you heavily refuel after a morning run?
You run 30-40 mpw and eat like a mouse. OY!

I'm probably going to do 4-5 this morning....wish me luck!
~Happy poop-free running!~

Bucky-Are you kidding?? I eat all night long!! Yesterday, I couldn't stop with the Wheat Thins. That's probably why I had a problem this morning. I had to come back home twice. After that, I went 14 though with no problems, other than these darn new shoes!

Wow--this is a long thread to read. Thank you so much to the regular posters here for sharing your experiences. I am a new runner and have learned so much by reading your trial and error posts.

I am training for a 25K race next weekend (May 13) and have been looking for something to prevent the post-long run cramping and diarrhea issues I have recently aquired. I thankfully don't have a problem during my runs and never a problem with mileage under say 6 or 7. I say recently aquired because I have only been running since January and my >7 mile runs only started about 6 weeks ago. (I'm almost 33, female and have 5 kids--no real "traumas" during birth and no poop issues other than after a long run)

From the info I read here, I tried taking one Immodium yesterday before my 10miler and made more of an effort to hydrate during the run (water only). It helped, but I still had some cramping for a couple hours afterwords (I took another Immodium with lots of water after the first "episode" post-run). I think I might try 2 before the race on Saturday and will eat an early dinner Friday, maybe a banana and gatorade early on race morning. I also wear a camelbak during my long runs and won't need it for the race--I have read elsewhere that wearing something tight around the gut may be a factor too??

Anyway, if you more experienced runners have any specific advice for pre-race diet to avoid gas, cramps and diarrhea, please let me know! I am not intending to "race" this race. I entered it with a friend with the goal of just wanting to run that far once in my life (she's actually already dropped out due to 2 stress fx). That said, I know the "nothing new on race day" is a common reply here, but I am looking at this as just another long run with about 2000 of my newest friends. I'd really like to be able to celebrate this accomplishment with my kids, DH and extended family members rather than spend most of the afternoon on the pot!

sorry so long--thanks for reading

Whoever suggested taking an Imodium before the long run....thank you, thank, and thank you. For the first time I was able to complete a long run w/o any complications....I ran my longest run ever....19 miles. Unfortunately, I am overloading fiber the morning after to get regular again. It was awesome to simply run w/o worring about going to the bathroom. I've only made it through 1 trial run; however, now I think I'll be able to actually achieve my full marathon goal this year. Here's what worked for me.

3 hours pre-run....wheat bagel w/ pnut butter and coffee
1 hour pre-run - 1 Imodium
30 minutes pre-run - one packet of sport beans with lots of water

During run...after one hour...pretzels and yup MnMs
after 2 hours...more sport beans
2 1/2 hours....more MnS and pretzels

Drank lots of water.....and not even once did my stomach act the slightest bit crampy, irritated, etc.

How do I get regular again? I keep taking Benefiber....but no results.

Congrats on your sccessful long run!
yay!

I'm not one to help you 'get' regular.
I'm so 'regular', that I can take 2 immodium, and STILL poop 1-2x during a run, and right away again the next day.
lucky, yes?
but OY! I'm a poopmachine...HAHAHAHAHA

try eating fresh fruit and some whole grains

again, congrats on the long run

Jeans-I wish I could help you, but I never have issues after a run, just during. I just want to say how amazed I am at your distances, while just being a runner a short time. Good luck on your 25K, and let us know how it goes. BTW, yes, wearing something tight around the gut seems to bother me sometimes.

Thanks for the reply, ShelleyM. I was in "good" shape before starting this training program in January, but am now feeling the effects of too much too soon (sore knees and right foot). Running is much different than the kickboxing, cycling and step classes I was taking before! I will be glad when this race is over so that I can back-track and build a strong running base before signing up for anything over 5K again. I really do love running--particularly those long, slow runs that cause me the problems! If anyone out there has had any success with eliminating post-running issues, I'd love to hear your strategy!

thanks again for reading and hope you all have incident-free runs!

Hi again!

Just finished my 25K and had absolutely no cramping/pooping issues afterwords. Thank you so much to everyone who has posted their experiences here for the rest of us to learn from. Here's what worked for me:
I drank lots of water the week prior to the race--I know I don't hydrate enough and had really slacked off in the last weeks of training. The day before the race I ate things that would be easily digested like bagels, bananas, pb&j sandwich, tortilla chips, pasta dinner (early dinner). This morning, I ate half a bagel with jam and a banana 2 hours before the race and drank a small gatorade and then refilled with water. Took one loperamide tablet 1 hour before race start. I got to the race 30 minutes early and used the porta-jon to be sure that everything "on-board" was eliminated before race start. I started drinking water at the 3 mile mark and then alternated water and gatorade for the rest of the race--aid stations were 1.5 miles apart. I didn't have to stop during the race and felt great at the end. I stayed away from the dairy choices in the post-race food line and took a water home, but don't feel particularly dehydrated for once.

I think my main problem was that I was not drinking enough of the right stuff during my long runs (over 1.5 hours). I only carried water and probably didn't drink enough. I had never heard of hyponatremia before, but came across it trying to self-diagnose on the internet. I will be sure to replace electrolytes with something on the long runs from now on. I also have a Dr. appt. in a couple weeks with a sports med/family practice guy to be sure my theory is correct and that everything else is working as it should.

thanks again for all the information you have shared!

Jeans-Congratulations on a great race! I'm glad that everything worked out for you. I only use SmartWater on my runs. It has electrolytes in it and has no taste. It's wonderful, if you are not into drinking anything other than water on runs, like I am.

L-My worst foods are dairy, high fiber cereal, I can't really think of any others right now. I usually drink coffee 1 hr before my run. It helps clean me out. A gastroenterologist is the appropriate dr. for this.

If you start reading this thread, you will probably find the answers to help you. It is quite long though, because there are a lot of us out there with this problem.

Wow, I feel like this thread was started just for me. I have been suffering from this problem for about 4 years now (I'm 41). I do all my training on the TM now so the bathroom is never far away.

I ran my third marathon on Sunday. When I reached mile 8 w/out that terrible "need to go" feeling, I thought I was home free. Boy, was I wrong. The stomach started rumbing at around mile 9, with no portapotty in sight. I ran up to a couple houses but no one answered. Next I found a little store and begged the sales guy to use the bathroom. He tried to convince me that there was no bathroom in the store. CAN YOU BEIIEVE THAT. Anyway, I finally found a little store that allowed me to use the toilet. Of course my shorts and underwear weren't looking too good by then. Luckily I had worn a pad so I was able to clean up without too much mess. However, I was plagued with the problem throughout the remaining 17 miles. Let's just say I wasn't looking or smelling too good when I finished.

When I'm suffering from this problem I'm always afraid to take my gels and gatorade for fear it will make the problem worse. I know logically, that dehydration makes the problem worse but I feel like either way, I'm screwed. Anyway, despite all the potty stops and tummy troubles, I was able to finish in 3:20. I just feel like I could do so much better if I wasn't constantly plagued with this problem.

I just wanted to add one more sh***y story to the thread. If I learn of any solutions, I'll be sure to post them. It's nice to know I'm not alone

Hi, I'm Marlene.... I have colon issues. (All together: "Hi Marlene")

So, I'm still reading, but....

I thought I'd chime in. At my last HM I dove twice into not so hidden places to take care of business. And for the 2nd time after a HM I've had bloody, puss-like, gassy, loose and icky colon issues with lower abdomin pain for several hours after the race and a "session" is usually preceeded by a nauceous feeling. On both occassions I'd taken IBUprofin for one reason or another. My next HM is on Sunday and will not be using IBU. I really hope that's the cause of the problem. I'm still reading though.
