I'm the queen of fiber [unsolubale AND soluble] ....my GI doc said for me NOT to cut back, even tho I think that might be part of my problem! LOL Better to have clean pipes, than stopped up pipes!

Well, I've been taking psyllium husk capsules and eating metamucil crackers with my morning tea, and I have been feeling really good lately. I've only been running 2x a week out of fear but I think I will step it up. Seems like this with the acupuncture is making a difference but I am not holding my breath. Shelley, check your labels on the oatmeal for fiber content- and lettuce has next to nothing in fiber- 1.8 grams in an entire head!! Are you eating 20 heads?!?! Check for yourself but I understand we are supposed to get 25-35 grams per day- really difficult to achieve. Kashi cereal is a good breakfast start at 9 grams a serving...uh oh- I am lecturing!

Psyllium seed husk is an excellent, noncaloric source of soluble dietary fiber, which promotes healthy elimination and regularity. Psyllium also helps maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Psyllium seed husk is an excellent, low caloric source of soluble dietary fiber. Consumption of seven or more grams of soluble fiber from psillium seed husk per day from this product in association with a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol, may reduce the ris of coronary heart disease. Source Naturals uses only the husk of the seed, as it is a much better fiber source than the whole seed. For Psyllium Husk Powder Products : Psyllium Husk Powder For More Information Nutrovita

I have mild ulcerative colitis. It seems that running aggrivates it with many people - I am quite the opposite. My flare ups are subdued with a long run. Of course, UC is one of those medical mysteries. And as for that whole tobacco thing and intestinal problems, I find it sad but true - I don't smoke but (embarassing to say) when I dip smokeless tobacco, it actually helps...Yeah, when you have UC, you do just about anything you can. Probably doesn't help much, but that's my experience.

smak3030, how long have you had UC? MIne is over 20 years. Are you on any long time meds? I take Colozal, and will for the rest of my life.I go through a 5 lb bag of shredded iceberg lettuce in 2 days. How sick is that? I do eat my share! I can't eat Kashi cereal, it makes me have terrible stomach pains. I also can't eat the WW cereals with 7 or 10 grams of fiber in them. I get horrific stomach pains with that also. Lettuce doesn't bother me at all, and neither does the oatmeal. [This message has been edited by ShelleyM (edited Apr-08-2006).]

well i have this prob to, but i don't know what its from yet, i did 3 years in the army and never had a prob with it and now all of a sudden i have it it was so bad today i decided im going to take a cell phone with me on my next few runs incase it happens again. it makes me so mad i want to just flip out. ive just started back outside, when i ran inside on the TM and it happened i really didn't think much of it but when your 3 miles away from home and you get them sweats and the OH CRAP pains in your guy its not fun. now as crazy as this sounds i think its just cause im getting back to running on my first run outside i took 3 days off after works and i have been talking longer breaks cause im getting use to running outside again and im starting to run for weight loss so my body is changing and i think thats the prob (prob a load of BS but i hope this is the case) cause i know last year when i started running again the first week was like this then it went away so i hope that is the case this time, pluss ihave been snacking and stuff today after work at 6:30 pm i ate dinner and now nothing else but water for the rest of the night and hopfully tomarrow AM i won't have a prob when i run. also i have tried to go before but i can't do it.

I noticed this week that when I reach mile 6 or 7, if I run too fast, my stomach starts acting up, and I start feeling the "urge." It's mainly after I stop for a drink. If I include a Starburst or Skittle after my drink, my stomach is better.

wow shelley, that's an interesting discoveryI have no rhyme nor reason with my pitstops...sometimes I can go 2 miles before the first one. Sometimes only .25. Sometimes i'll have 2 per run, sometimes 5 stops in a five miler. my colon has a mind of its own btw, After about 5-6 wks, the Align seems to sloooooowly be helping: It has slowed down frequency and urgency to only a mild panic level, instead of PANIC ATTACK level. LOL

Hi: Has anyone ever heard of using a medication called Questran (cholestyramine) in the treatment of fecal incontinence or diarrhea while running? I know there has been some discussion of this problem on this site in the past and I could really use some direction on this. carol

Carol-I did a search on the net and it says Questran is a cholestral lowering drug. Have you done a search? Please check it out. It looks like it has quite a few side affects.

Since I don't knwo how to search on these boards....has anyone had any good luck using probiotics? i always have digestion issues and have been taking spring valley acidophilus from walmart for a few weeks and have seen some good improvement. ive heard, though, that this brand is low in active organisms/serving (claims 100 million/2 pills) and that for the most benefit a dose should have around one billion organisms....cant anyone recommend a brand?

I just want to say this thread makes me happy - after I had my son my insides stopped being as reliable as they could be and I have gone to the doctor for it yet none of his advise really helps. I try to follow a strict diet and all that jazz but sometimes it doesn't help - like Monday at the Boston Marathon!!! Try explaining to people your frustrastion that your time was slow because you had to go twice. I'm glad that other people can relate.

OMG! I repeat... OMGToday I slogged a 10 miler with NO, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH poopstops. (My pee stop doesn't count.) You people all understand what this means to me! Three massive climbs, no WTPJ stops, and 10 miles!! I took it super slow, had my water and sourpatch gummy worms, groovin' tunes on the Nano. Maybe [fingers Xd] the Align is starting to help out....altho this is the first time post-run that I felt I could make that statement. Now I need to go scope my food journal and see what I did differently to prevent the dreaded colonblow.

OMG, Karen!! Maybe it is the stuff you are taking. Can you let everyone know again the brand and where you bought it?About the probiotics, they never helped me, but have helped some people. Actually I think the stuff Karen is taking might be that, isn't it, Karen? I am so glad that everyone is enjoying the talk on this thread. Only those of us with stomach problems can relate!

I was just searching the web for "running and ischemic colitis" and this forum popped up....glad I came across it. I was just recently diagnosed w/ Ischemic Colitis...doctor said my Protein S was borderline low and I need to stop working out so much. I only workout for 2 hours a day (40 minutes of cardio)...and I don't think I'll ever be able to stop that. But, I do have to say my problem has become somewhat more tolerable after I started taking these pills....Healthy Trinity by Natren. It is a probiotic and has definitely helped. I still get most of my symptoms, but I feel like it has helped minimize my symptoms a little....plus my hair and nails grow like crazy!!

Thanks for the info, Spanky.I had problems this morning. I did my regular 2 miles warmup, stopped at home for a potty break, then at mile 5 had to run back home. Made it just in time. After that, I was able to go another 5 with no problems.

Hi everyone. I've been reading through this topic's pages. I can't possibly make time to read all the relpies!I think I've been having runners trots. Only suddenly, within the last few weeks it even happens on days I don't run. Mornings being the worse. Sometimes I'll go 7 times from the time I wake up to noon. By the time my kids get home from school everything has calmed down but than if I go for a later run it comes back. I tired running at 6am before I've had ANYTHING on my stomach and that seems to help until later in the day or the next morning. My husband has UC and i'm trying to get an appointment with his DR. but while I jump through the hoops and wait for the call from them I just can't help but think you guys may offer some help. Something I should take? I read that someone here uses Imodium AD. I've tired it but it's not the texture so to say but how often. Anything herbal? Some magic trick? ANYTHING!!! I refuse to stop running. But this is driving me crazy. ~vireo

Hi, Back again. The warmer weather, harder training and stress as I finish my MA are all adding up to not fun finishes after workouts.I did have a nice 5 mile race on Sat. after being concerned by my body's response to speed work on Tuesday and Thursday last week. Sat. am pre-race was very 'productive', took an immodium just in case and I was back to 'normal' by evening. Has anyone else seen the connection betweek using Intal and issues? I read in an online overview of Intal that it isn't the best choice for lactose intolerant folks, and cutting out most dairy has helped a lot. Ah balancing the nose and the other end's issues!

Just wanted to pop in to ask a question that could get answered here... More often than not, while out running long runs or even shorter ones in the evening - I have what seems to be a huge bubble of air stuck in the upper left quadrant of my intestine that moves along with me with each foot fall. And you can actually hear it every time! It never goes anywhere - just sits there and it starts hurting after a while. I've tried smaller meals, less hydration - not sure what to do.

ShelleyM...btw...if you are interested in the Healthy Trinity don't freak out about the prices you find online. Most of them are super expensive. I go to Betterlife.com and type in Natren Healthy Trinity. It is about half the price there.

Hey guys.Tried to get in to DH GI Dr but they insist on a refer. So I go to family doc tomarrow.....maybe I'll luck out and it'll end up just being IBS and runner trots combined. I really want to get things under control. I find myself having to run 2ce a day to keep up on miles...some in the morn. poo poo poo get kids on bus poo poo poo....more running ...poo poo poo....ugggg I live in BRE too...no portajohns just bushes and then the cows watch. I do notice that if I run at 6 am before I eat it is less of an issue. You guys notice that? Hi Shelly. My DH has had UC for 5 yrs now. He takes handfuls of pill everyday and Mesalamine suspension enemas every night, except nights @ the firestation. Sucks. I'm worried. Hes only 30 ;( He HATES to run (omg) so nothing compounds it. He swears by smokless tobacco! I've heard other people agree ( i think someone here too) that it helps with the bleeding. I feel bad for anyone with that. What all do you use Healthy Trinity for??
