:::thnx shelley:::I actually got brave and went outside for my 5.5er....felt GREAT other than having to find bushes 2x; but the run itself was good/everything was 'clicking' today.

So, my PCP has me set up for a small intestine bacterial overgrowth test. (Hydrogen breath test.) If this is positive then I will know that I have a bacterial problem in my small intestine that is causing this diarrhea. However, even if it is negative I am still going to try the antibiotics. Presented at the 70th annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology. Rifaximin given 400 mg. orally 3 times a day for 10 days was better than placebo at ridding patients with IBS w/diarrhea of their problem. My doctor is willing to try this. Rifaximin is an odd antibiotic that resists absorption into the body and treats the intestine Also, there is a new probiotic "Bifidobacterium infantis 35624" that is not commercially available yet (though people on the IBS boards say within a few months) was very effective at treating bacterial overgrowth and IBS with either constipation or diarrhea. So, there could be hope...but it might be a month or more away.

I have had problems for a couple of years now and after my second colonoscopy my Doc has diagnosed ischemic colitis. This is different to runners trots, which typically is only diarrhea or urgency. Colitis causes bleeding and ulceration of the colon. The good news for me is there is no permanent damage to my colon or deep tissue damage. At this point my Doc recommends running only every other day to give the colon a chance to heal in between runs, staying hydrated and running at a low heart rate. I can also take Immodium when I am racing or before long runs. He also doesn't anticipate the problem getting worse. While it is no fun having this problem, after all these years I feel I can deal with it now knowing that I am not causing permanent damage to my colon and that I am not at risk for losing my bowel. I hope this helps those of you who have the same problem. [This message has been edited by kate60 (edited Dec-21-2005).]

Kate-I have had ulcerative colitis for about 20 years. I know what you are dealing with, and I just want to say, good luck. Does the dr. have you on any long term medication? I take Colozol, probably for the rest of my life. It has been wonderful. When I feel a flare coming on, I just up my dosage myself. I am due another colonoscopy soon (I have 1 every 2 or 3 years.)------------------ My Profile

Shelley, I am not taking medication. It sounds dumb but it did not occur to me to ask about meds and this all happened just recently. My colitis is not severe and generally only brought on by intense exercise mostly running, sometimes cycling. I had planned to discuss treatment options with my primary at the next visit. How does the medication work? Can you give me some info about it.

Kate-From what I understand, Colozal goes directly to the colon when taken, then the medication is released there. I have had no luck with Pentasa or Asacol. If I have a flare, prednisone is the only thing that helps me. I hate that stuff with a passion. It not only promotes weight gain, but also too much of it makes my hands cramp up and keeps me awake at night. Fortunatly, I haven't had a severe flare in a couple of years. The Colozal was prescribed to me by my new GI when my previous GI retired. I truly believe that running helps me in the stress department. Even though I do have problems once in awhile while running, in the long run it is helping me.

Hi fellow sufferers,I went through the Rifaximin treatment and the probiotic I previously mentioned is now on the market. Here's a link: http://www.aligngi.com/about.shtml The literature seems to indicate that it will take 7-8 weeks to see maximum improvement. For me, too soon to tell. But, I will keep you updated. I haven't posted in a while but I check this thread regularly... Runnerdiva45, it seems like you and I are very similar in our situations- I would like to have more dialog with you by email if you are agreeable. This has been a problem for a year and a half for me and it seems to be getting worse... I was intrigued that you are not worried about being diagnosed with ischemia. How do you manage the symptoms? Does your doc recommend you keep running?

[/B][/QUOTE]Hi guys, I hope everyone is doing well! jerri~ Sorry to hear that your symptoms are not getting better. Thankfuly, I am back to running at my harder pace without any more symptoms. My Dr. gave me the ok to do so after my colonoscopy. I make sure I am well hydrated now, drinking at least 1 gallon of water a day, cut way back on caffeine and stopped taking Advil and use Tylenol now if needed. Also, not sure if this has anything to do with my incident, but since then I haven't ran in any heat or humidity...my symptoms occured both times on very humid days, after a very hard run, when I was not at all hydrated. Fell free to email anytime, I'de be glad to shed any light if I can...good luck! ~Kerri

kerri, great news/glad things are working out for you!I'm about 17 days post-op/no running yet, but lots of walking. I had to stop once for a poopstop while walking, but only once out of 8-9 days. That's actually great, but still frustrating that I had to stop when WALKING, for crying out loud. lol cheers

Bumping up this thread to keep it active. Hope everyone is ok! I have had a few problems, but not anything that I haven't been able to get home in time. Now I have started developing hives every once in awhile. Not sure what's happening. Possibly and onset of UC coming? I cut out the wheat I was eating and still getting them. hope you all are running well these days. I was having some real bad runs so went back to internet researching--I read that colonic ischemia rarely if ever happens within the rectum and that really seems like the location of my discomforts so I decided to self diagnose myself with internal hemorroids. I noticed a few articles on acupuncture when I googled hemorroids, and so decided to see my acupuncturist. He feels he can help, as the urges I feel are at least partially nerve related. One week has gone by and two needle sessions ( which are really not a big deal- nothing like a scope in one's backside!). To combat dehydration he has me drinking several liters of water with seasalt in it each day for a while, and I am taking some herbs to discourage my bleeding.I have been feeling really normal and have had several happy noneventful runs. He is even addressing my achilles tendonitis with good results so far. Perhaps I am just between flareups but knock on wood, maybe this is helping!

Jerri-I hope your runs remain "uneventful" and the acupunture really helps you.Hi Karen! How is everything going for you? Are you back to running? I went to my GI the other day because they wouldn't redo my meds without an appointment (it's been 2 1/2 years.) He said I would be due for my 3 year colonoscopy in Sept, but gave me my script for Colozal and Prozac for the year. I haven't had any bad accidents lately, so things have been going fine. I have had a few "almosts", but have made it home in time. Good runs to all!

hi melissa10k [saw your thread in Med Tent]Welcome to the colon club. LOL Many of us have battled this 'issue' for YEARS [raising hand]....some have found a variety of ways to help themselves get thru races and training runs without any major events. I am one of the unfortunates who've not found *anything* that helps. Therefore I've relegated myself to: 1. no racing or 2. running in the dark or 3. wearing Depends or 4. running on the TM (Yes, I've seen specialists, but without success.) I could give up running, but I enjoy it TOO MUCH to let it go. Good luck to you, and hope your race goes well! ------------------ On Wisconsin TurtleXing

Hi,I am trying the Align and I think it is possibly working. I have not had a real "accident" when out running in a couple of months. I have on and off stomach problems other times, but they don't seem to deteriorate into the severe D. The people on the IBS forums were really buzzing about this when it first came out. I need to go back and see what they are saying. It is like $28 for a 28 day supply. If it is going to work it is supposed to take 7-8 weeks. I was really having lots of problems...when running and not. So, if it is working this is like a really terrific thing! http://www.aligngi.com/about.shtml Suzette

hi shelley, Well so far, no changes for me with the Align. I've only been on it less than 2 wks, and I believe it takes at least a month to really take charge of the system! today I ran a sloooooooooow 7, and had to stop back at home after one mile, then ran into a business at mile 4, and then an 'accident' at mile 6....AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
This is SO frustrating. If I hated running, this would be the most convincing reason to JUST QUIT.

on my latest trip to the doc he said I should focus on enough fiber-- how many of you are actually eating 25-35g fiber a day? Sure helps clear the debris...

Jerri-I probably eat that much because I tend to overeat oatmeal. I also eat lettuce like it's going out of style.
