man o man, I love whatever happy juice they gave me today! LOL knocked me out cold within one minute wheeeee!no news is good news: I am healthy as a horse...a pooping horse, that is. Colon is as clean and healthy as anything. [I was also impressed that my resting HR was 50 and BP was 109/74 while waiting for this to start....that's pretty good, isn't it? considering I was on an operating table and not yet on meds?!] GI doc is sending me to ANOTHER GI specialist at UW Hospital. She said that lower GI stuff is his specialty and he deals in biofeedback as well as surgery as an ultimate choice. I'll call as soon as I'm done being loopy....got home at 10am and the meds are still taking me to a happy place. HAHAHAHA Here's my favorite part: the post-op paperwork said that I may not be able to have a bowel movement for a day or two. YIPPEEEEE! I'll be out running tomorrow for sure. [bet I still poop, whatya think?]

I say just when you think you can get a run in without pooping, that is when it happens. Although I am starting to pay more attention. I usually try to empty out in the morning before running. This morning despite my efforts I just didn't seem to be able to git er done. So I went running as we were camping and I was running a 6 miler in the woods. Well that got it going. Went twice on the end of the run and again as soon as I got back. Cleaned out now. Need to come up with a system for being empty beforehand. I am also starting to notice certain foods bring it on the next day. No more dinner salads with ranch dressing for one.

Karen- Sorry, I've been MIA on this thread. How did the procedure go?? I'm going to check the running thread on CTG to see if you have posted any results there. I hope your prep wasn't too bad (yeah, right!!)

shelley, I must be the oddball, cuz the prep was not an issue for me. I mixed it with SF crystal lite lemonade and it tasted like gatorade....slammed 8 oz every 20 min till it was gone.the dashes to the toilet were another issue....HAHAHAHAHA procedure was normal/clean as a whistle....GI doc wants me to see a lower-GI specialist to work on biofeedback stuff. my comment from my last post was they thought it would be 1-2 days before my next bm....HAHA on them...my system was up and going at 6am today. OY! I am truly full of it. i've only run 1x this week...have been doing other forms of cardio: biking, interval tapes. I hope to get out tomorrow or sunday depending on the t-storms moving thru How are things going for you? hey stmarys, watch out for poison oak and ivy when pretending to be a bear in the woods. LOL seriously, hope you get a handle on which foods 'do it' to ya.

Hi all....I've been lurking in this thread off and on, getting some good information from all of you. I've experienced this problem as well on my long runs, usually at about the one hour mark all hell breaks loose in my gut and I'm eyeballing the next patch of bush ahead. (luckily I run in a rural area) Tried the Imodium thing this morning. I might have taken it too close to my run, because it didn't stave off bush diving at hour one, but kept me quite comfortable for the rest. Next time I'll try taking it an hour before heading out.Funny thing about this problem (actually NOT funny)...is that it is actually making my decision to do the 10k race instead of the half next month. I know I can run the 10k without a pitstop, but doubtful that I can get through the half without an emergency situation. My sympathies to you all, I feel your pain. BTW.... Cannot fathom running in depends, omg...running in a diaper? Boy am I glad I live in the country!

hey, I gotta do what I gotta do [ I only wear those in the winter when the snow is too deep to dive into bushes. LOL]either that or spend my life on a TM or quit running I have some nice rural bushes for pitstopping....but that relegates me to one route....gets kinda boring I fret SO MUCH over poop-prepping for races, that I'm not doing them. *sigh*

A little trick of mine that I do sometimes, is to do a pre-run on my TM until I get a little action (not THAT kind of action..) Then.....get my butt outside for the real thing. If you have this problem more than once during runs though (yes I'm talking to you WTPJ) that might not help much. This is such a fun thread, my daughter just asked me if I'm typing about poop again. She must be so proud.

Drink a cup or two of coffee an hour or so before you run.

Boston-I always drink a cup or 2 approx 1 hr before my run. Helps quite a bit for me. I also always go 11/2 mile warmup, then home for a quick poop and pee break before I start out again. Yesterday, I ran 4 1/2, then had to rush back home, but I guess it was just my imagination, because nothing happened. Went back out in the wind and rain from the edges of Katrina and finished up with 9. Happy non-pooping to all!

shelly, are you safe? damage from the storm? yikes! I have no problems 'going' before my early morning run, so no need for coffee....my issues happen even when I go before heading outside.
Eliminating beforehand doesn't eliminate the need for further elimination....HAHAHAHA from the department of redundancy department. The coffee trick doesn't work for me. I'm glad it helps others tho.

Porta-The storm passed us by! My run today was awesome--breezy and no pooping issues. Went 8.5.

So many people reporting similar problems- I think I will print this entire thread and give it to my GI doc on my next visit. I've started using Immodium tablets before running, with some success. I took a long week off after my last bleeding episode, to let the sores/lesions I envision in my colon to heal. Mid July I began going out for gingerly 20-40 min. runs, just 3-4 times a week with Immodium taken a few hours earlier. I'm trying to pay attention to how I am feeling during the day of my run and gauge the need for Immodium- I can often tell if my bowels are going to be uppity that day. So far no bleeding... but I still don't feel that I can count on things being right. I've passed on my 1/2 marathon that had been planned for the end of October... and now a days when people ask, "Jer, are you still running?" I say, "Well, not really anymore, it causes me too many odd injuries". I actually am starting to think that I am not a "runner" anymore.

Hi WTPJ! this is a great thread, nice to know we're not alone. I haven't experienced the blood, but know all to well about looking for bushes, even if I've gone 3 times that day already. I do have better luck running in afternoon vs. mornings. training for las vegas now, plenty of portapotties at races, TG!

I would race if there were potties EVERY mile...OY OY OY!But hey, my GI doc is way impressed with my plumbing/she says everyone should look so good. Guess that's the only up-side to all of this. LOL

I agree about not giving up!!Today I 'went' before heading out at 4:30am and STILL had to stop four times during my easy/relaxed 7 miler....I hate it....but the run itself was GREAT. When my pitstops AND my run are both miserable, that's when I'm tempted to give it up; but today I felt so good, that the pooping didn't bother me. Have a great weekend, 'Colon-ists' ------------------ On Wisconsin TurtleXing

Can diet pop contribute to 'the runs'? lol i drink quite a bit of it and i am curious if this is not too good for me? i read that drinking too much of anything warm and running {or anything for that matter too close to running} can add to the problem since running 'jostles' you? thanks!

Is it abnormal to have to poop more than a few times a day? I've never experienced the blood, but I usually have to go at least 5-6 times a day. Ok this is also a little embarrassing, but I also have "overactive bladder" which I've been taking meds for the past few months and it makes me think that my body doesn't want to retain anything!
