hi again!i see some of us are making positive progress--thats good news~ i was able to make 6 miles yesterday and 8 miles this morning...and doing fine. my main change as stated last time is running with no bread or PB before hand, despite the distance...i still have 1/2 c. of coffee about 15 min before the run and it seems to be working fine for me (yay cause i love it!!). another thing i ahve noticed though is my period was super light, almost nonexistent this time around...so if it isnt one thing it sure is another! anyhow, gotta get workin just wanted to check in! cathy

Yay Cathy! Elimination of dairy has been really helpful here.I can still have that beer...or two or three and be okay...red wine is another story. The concentrated sugar in juice will cause issues here so cutting it with selzer and limiting intake is a must...and makes sense. Good luck staying on top of things.

Haven't heard from anyone lately. I hope that means your runs are getting better. Mine have been okay this week. I've put in 33 miles this week with not too much problem, as far as tummy goes.Karen-I hope you're having fun in Alaska!

Well, I am doing the Immodium D thing and it is working. At first, I took it every day, now I have backed off and take it every few days or so. It has helped, and gives me more time to find the wonderful portapotty. No problems for 2 weeks.

Thought I was doing good, then today went out prepared to do 10, then before my normal break, I had a leakage problem. Went home, then went out and ran a little more, came back home to the bathroom and did that same thing twice. Then I was okay to go out and get 10 in. I hate this! To top things off, I had a hard time since it is so darn hot out. I had to take walk breaks starting at 7 miles.------------------ My Profile

Haven't posted in a while, trying to catch up on everybody's news...For me things have been improving, but now I'm in the process of building from 15 mi week up to marathon training, so I'm sure my problem will become more frequent again. The worst part for me is that I have to wait until I think (and hope and pray) I've gotten everything out of me before my run...Some days that takes HOURS, and it really is a time waster. I tell my husband I'm going out for a run at a certain time, and he says "yeah, right!"...The other day I got a quarter mile into my run, had to run (& walk) back home. At least I made it, I haven't in the past. Some days it doesn't matter how long I wait, I still have problems. Agh!!!!!!! Just sharing a little...thanks for listening! Karen, your new doc sounds great....I'm embarrassed to say I STILL haven't scheduled my colonoscopy....I need to do that...I'm going to try to find a woman like you have. Good luck with it all everybody.

ACP50-You sound exactly like me! I only hope you don't have my condition (Ulcerative Colitis.) That's why I always go for a 1.5 mile warmup, then home, then back out again. Fortunatly, going down the block near my home is that long.

Hi gang We're back from Alaska...exhausted right now and won't post much. WOW...Alaska is everything you've read about + 10x MORE!!Only had 1-2 opportunities to run and the time I went out we only went 2+ miles due to being in grizzly country...didn't have any potty issues, thank goodness! HAHAHA Glad to see that we're all still connecting online....in fact, last night on the plane, I sat with a woman who is a runner with POTTY ISSUES like us. I asked her to come to the site and find this thread....hope she joins our 'colony' cheers

Karen-Glad to hear you had a great time. Was it cold there?I was able to run 9 today with no colon issues. Seems like there is no rhyme or reason with me. I even ate grapes late yesterday afternoon, which is a no-no for me. Didn't make my 30 this week, though--only 26.5. Oh well, next week I'll try again.

Shelley, WTG on the 9 with no pitstops! Hot and humid too, I'll bet!"cold" is a relative term: for you [as a Floridian], yes, it would have been cold in some parts....the inner passage near Glacier Bay and Elfin Cove and Tracey Arm were sleeting/raining/windy/overcast/the highs barely made ~50ish. I ::loved:: the cool break from our way-too-hot-already summer in Wisconsin. Yet in Fairbanks and Juneau it was sunny and got into the 80s!

I haven't posted much lately - as I haven't had much of a problem until today again. I was trying to add a little distance this morning when I started thinking "oh,oh" better head home. Made it - in the nick of time.My probelm is ice cream. Last night after dinner I had an ice cream bar. I thought that was early enough in the evening not to be a big deal . . . . .wrong! Guess it is a matter of paying attention to what works and what dosen't. I have not scheduled my colonscopy either - hard phone call to make. Alaska sounds 'GREAT! DH and I are saving up to go there some day - probably a few years off yet.

oooo, sorry to hear that the ice cream is a problem...is all dairy an issue for you? Or just the timing of that ice cream treat last night?I did a slow [muggy/humid/stick at 4 am] 4 miles with 2 pitstops this morning. "Same old, same old" for me. Alaska is a spectacular place! The magnitude boggles my mind.
Not sure what you're interested in, but here's what we did: We did a 1 day land tour of the Fairbanks area, then into Denali Park for 3 days [white water rafting, touring Jeff King's dogsled kennels, siteseeing in Denali]; then hopped the Alaska rail for an 8 hour luxury ride on the BRAND NEW [2 wks old] Gold Star observation car...not a dome like the old cars, the ENTIRE top was an observation area complete with open air viewing deck in back and bottom of the car was a fabulous restaurant. We spent one day in Anchorage, then flew to Juneau. In Juneau we set sail on the second leg of our vacation: a 7 day trip on the Yorktown Clipper. the only thing that our boat and a giant cruise liner had in common was that they are basically floating PIGOUTS!!! HAHAHA The difference is that the Clipper only visits the Inside Passage, and gets you up close and personal with places like Elfin Cove, Tracey Arm, Glacier Bay, Skaggway, Sitka, etc. We could slide right up to glaciers and sea lions, and had a humpback splashing us as we hung over and cheered while he was breeching. This ship houses 140 passengers and has NO gambling, or shows, or fitness areas, etc. It is totally a nature/hiking/siteseeing/environmental fun ship. We had lectures from geologists and glacier specialists. The two naturalists on board helped us learn to spot specific sea birds, etc. I was in awe of the entire spectacle of wildlife, native history, goldrush history, temperate rainforests, and mountains. I did gain 4-5 pds since there was little chance to do any sort of fitness activitiy...and the fact that I was putting away food like I was a walrus storing up for winter! LOL Hope you all get a chance to go someday.

Karen-It sounds like your trip was awesome. I would love to go to Alaska someday, but I really don't know if I could handle the cold. When I went to Colorado one year and up to Pike's Peak, I thought I would die from being frozen!!Hopeful-Are you lactose intolerant? The ice cream thing would do me in completely!

I think that I am to a certain degree. To just eat some ice cream I'm fine - but mix that with running just tears me up for whatever reason. I'm noticing that just snacking in general at night is a no-no for me. Which is probably a good thing in the long run - as far as dieting goes. Alaska is suppose to be pretty nice in June - temperature wise. My boss went for 3 weeks a few years ago. One week cruise, one week drive around and one week to travel elsewhere. I can't wait to go . . .. .I'm so jealous! I had to add this - thought it was appropriate for our group!

well, I seemed to have had an all time high pitstop record today...won't even tell you how often I stopped during my 5.5 miler...AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHI know that it was due to last night: ate a high calorie high carb high fat LATE night dinner and went to bed shortly afterwards...so the colon was protesting violently this morning. *grrrr* My legs and body were sloggy and heavy and slower than my normal turtle pace; it was simply a bad run all around today.

Well, my run today was awful. I had a problem at mile 1. Went home changed clothes, then went out for 1/2 mile and came back home just in case. Ended up with 8, but it took me 1:47 to make it!! I certainly hope tomorrow is better. I started WW Core again and probably ate too much oatmeal for the last 2 days.------------------ My Profile

shelley, how interesting that you have such a wide swing in whether the colon protests or not....good job on that 10 today!I'm back to going multiple times during any length of run; today I lucked out and only went once during my 4 miler. fyi, I have decided [unless the GI doc really pushes the issue] *NOT* to do her 2 week trial on using the glycerine suppositories: After considering the +/- of it, am not comfortable with using something that might become habit forming....(as you mentioned in a previous post)
and what if using them actually WORKS and allows me to run 'issue-free'? What then? Do I rely on them>>>thus messing up my system?!?! No way do I want that! I'm going to call her on Tuesday and see how she'd like me to proceed. have a great remainder to the holiday weekend [This message has been edited by wherestheportojohn (edited Jul-04-2005).]

miracle of miracles: I did a five miler this morning with ~zero~ pitstops1. it helped that monday nite I took 2 immodium before bed, to prep for tuesday's 4am run: went once before heading out, and only one stop during that five miles 2. then I took 2 more immodium last night, had a bm before heading out again at 4am today....no stops during the entire run....not even a sense of NEED! OMG! HAHAHAHA no running on tap for tomorrow and a TM run on Friday, so I won't need to take anything for the next few days have a groovy day

I'm new to this thread but not new to the problem you all share-- 44 yr old mom of 2 kids/ runner for 30 years...problems with bleeding for a year now. Have any of you considered we might have internal fissures or internal hemmorhoids that simply get jostled/ irritated from running, especially from friction of what ever is left in our colons while we are running? This is my latest unproven theory, having ruled out lactose intolerance, cancer (I've been scoped). My GI doc is pretty unconcerned but I get miserable after some runs with discomfort and the need to "go", and feeling like my insides are all torn up.

Don't you just love the way that the drs. think it is okay to have some bleeding? My GI says that it is normal when you have UC, because the scaring can cause it.Where's-Good for you!! I can't believe you had 2 good runs. Maybe the night before is the trick for you. I ran 7 today, yesterday, and Monday with no problem. I'm going for a 40 mile week since I'm on vacation. No run tomorrow, though. I'm taking my DD to Tampa this afternoon to look at USF and UT campuses tomorrow. I'll be back to running on Friday. I have already gone 31 miles this week, and my only bad day was last weekend. ------------------ My Profile

Karen-No, I'm not training for anything. Just running for fun. I'm so slow, I probably could never do a marathon. We didn't get much more than wind and rain here. Thanks for thinking of me. I read your QOTD yesterday, and I notice that most people run so much faster than me! I just can't do it at that pace. Thought I was going to have stomach problems on a couple of the days, but came home a few times for a potty break and everything turned out okay. ------------------ My Profile
