Karen-Let me know what happened at your appt. yesterday.
BTW, I got my book from Amazon.com also. Well worth the money spent. I think it will be very easy to follow most of the instructions incorporating them into WW.

Where's the port a john// How did the doc appt go? Anxious to hear how you're doing. I've been OK, still working back to my previous mileage. I definitely don't have the same bathroom problems at shorter distances so I've only had a few incidents. Now that my knees are somewhat better, I have the horrendous humidity and heat here in VA. Today it'll get to 92 with 70% humidity. Yuck!

g'morning from hot, steamy, humid wisconsin

honestly, I don't know how you southerners do it....I ran at 4am and the conditions were 72 degrees and 66% humidity

the 4.3 miles felt like running in sand and breathing thru cheese cloth

I meant to do a 'longer' one, but conditions wouldn't allow it; so I might hop on my TM this afternoon for an additional 3 miler in air conditioned comfort. LOL
[btw, do any of you ever do 'split' runs like that? I've never done it before....am/pm running]

Here's something interesting that happened quite by accident:
last night I went shopping with DS#1 and had to use the store's restrooms for a bm at 7pm [and I usually never have to do this in the evenings!?!]....so today's run only needed ONE pitstop around mile one. cool, eh?

I'll talk about GI appt in the next post

GI visit:

First off, this woman is keen on helping...we discussed EVERYTHING, every detail...yes, every detail [it doesn't bother me to talk to her about it]

according to the results of my defecography, I have normal pelvic floor function, so no prolapse, etc that we first suspected

however, the findings mentioned that there might actually be a problem with complete elimination [some who are constipated are prone to have this] which might be the reason for such frequent pitstops....even tho we discussed that mine are large, full formed, etc, she said "let's try something to see if this is the problem"

so, when I get back from my vacation at the end of june, I'm going to start daily glycerin suppositories [laxative] to do a trial and see if this indeed will help with complete emptying and help reduce pitstops.

since I run so early in the summer, I am going to do the glycerin at 7pm [to replicate what happened at the store yesterday! LOL] and then when I run at 4am the next day, things may have to only empty out once instead of 2-3x

cont'd

If after 2 weeks I don't notice any improvement, I am to call her again for more consultation

she is totally stumped, btw and admitted to wanting to try anything to help me out....I told her that I'd be a great guinea pig for research

she said she'd love to hook me up to the defecography camera-machine while on a TM, but doesn't think she can swing that

finally, we scheduled me in for a colonoscopy on Aug 25th....she wants to 'make sure'

I really like this doc and am willing to do ANYTHING she suggests

forgot to mention:

during our discussion about my nutrition, she had several comments that I found interesting....according to my 'symptoms', she does not feel that I have colitis, IBS, food allergies, etc

she said stay away from sorbitol, keep coffee at a minimum, but no need to eliminate it.

I asked if I should cut back on fiber and she said,
"you can never have too much fiber" LOL

she wants me to continue with the 2x daily dose of metamucil, and during the two week glycrerin trial, I am not to use imodium [will defeat the purpose]

port o john...i gather most of this is good news, right! it sounds like it...at least a solution looks to be in the near future...

i haven't check in in a while! was out of town this weekend so here i am. ive been doing good...didnt get a long run in over the weekend (grr trips will do that to you) just a 7 miler...no bladder problems with it! then monday i ran 6...still doin ok...and this morning i ran 8 with no cramping or anything!!! woohoo!! i have been doing something slightly different. ive been making sure my tummy is satisfied at night, eating late if thats what it takes ...i think i was underconsuming calories for a while and maybe that messed me up? for instance, saturday night i had a slice of pizza at like 10 pm...woke up for my seven miles at 5:45 and ran it problem free! (even had my half c. of coffee)

then sunday night i had a filling dinner (chicken, black beans, guac, alll stuffed in a pita and had a little bit of low fat ice cream later on at night) same thing in the am -- 1/2 c. coffee and out the door at 5:30 am...no probs!

last night once again had a filling dinner of chicken, broc, and potoates and later on a cookie with some mroe low fat ice cream ( i know this doesnt mean load up on sweets just waiting till it is all out of the freezer)...up this morning with 1/2 c. coffee and 8 mile run...no problems! i've also slightly changes things by NOT EATING anything in the morning. i usually have 1 slice of toast with PB anywhere from 15-25 minutes before heading out the door...for the time being im going on an empty stomach...

so far so good for me. thanks for making it through my whole post i hope everyone else can "experiement"...i am suprised to have good results so soon! im aiming for a 10-13 miles run on friday morning through my neighborhood so this will be the real test cause theres no potty in site!

Okay, I've been lurking here on and off as my problem seems to come and go, but after this morning figured I had better post. I've only read the 1st 2 pages and last page so I know a little about the "players" and I'm happy to see APC50 over here - just wish it was a better topic.

About me: I usually tend to be on the constipated side in general - that is until I started running. I've changed my diet quite a bit and try to eat more fiber. My daily diet is usually a granola bar in the a.m. - lunch is a tossed salad (large one) with cheese & croutons, fresh fruit in the afternoon, normal dinner and popcorn and night.

I will sometimes get 1/2 way through a 4 - 6 mile run and have the urge to have a bowel movement. So far I've made it home - usually have to walk a little to help the feeling subside. After I'm home, I have to go directy to the bathroom and I feel like I have the cold sweats. Ususally takes me 2-3 times to get everything out. Today however, I got to the end of the street and couldn't hold it anymore and had a bit of an accident. I felt so juvinile - could not believe it was happening to me! I was so glad my husband had to leave early today. I was able to go alot when I got inside, and then once I got to work, had to go even more - was in the bathroom what seemed to be forever.

I'm 45 and have to have a colonoscopy soon - just need to schedule it. My mom had a scare with colon cancer last year.

For my long runs (usually Saturday) I'd have a couple of beers Friday night with lots to eat and then in the a.m. have one cup of coffee and just sit for 1/2 hour. That almost always makes me go and then I feel good on the run - but I can't have that regimine daily!

Just wanted to add my dilema to the board and see what you guys think. I'm going to make the appointment soon, just waiting for our new insurance cards.

Thanks for reading - I've been so down today - not a nice way to start out in the morning.

Oh, I did have ice cream last night which is very rare for me - could that have caused the problem? This is not a daily occurance for me, as a matter of fact I was just thinking yesterday that it has been over a week since I had a problem during a run. Usually happens right when I get home.

Sorry - rambling . . . .

Hopeful-Maybe you are latose intolerant. I know if I eat ice cream, about 3-4 hrs later I have terrible gas cramps and diaherra. Can you eat dairy and drink milk? It could also possibly be the granola bar. I can't tolerate that before I run at all. Granola has a tendency to make me blow up and get the runs also.

Karen-I am so glad that you found such a good GI. It sounds like she is trying to do everything possible to help you. Before I had UC and back when I was quite younger, I used to use suppositories daily. That was my way of "losing weight" after an eating binge. Those things really can mess you up, but since you are under a dr's care it should be okay. Just don't get dependent on them like I once was. I even got a friend started on them and I think she still uses them after 20 some odd years.

Cathy-I'm glad you are doing better. Maybe you have found the trick for your body. I hope it continues to cooperate.

I am sitting here at the computer because it is pouring outside. I have been forced to cut back. I have only gone 14 miles this week and the week is almost over!

shelley,
I called the doc yesterday about that VERY thing! [dependency] and she said that it is only a two week trial and if I am concerned, to only use them on the days I'm running...not every day as we'd discussed

On a side note: I went to an end-of-year staff party today and there was NOTHING WW friendly to eat....I ended up having about a trillion points worth of fabulous cheeses.
Maybe it'll bind my up and I can have a poop-free run tomorrow morning! LOL

I might be on the TM tomorrow tho, since t-storms are predected....bummer

HAHA...so much for the 'binding effects' of cheeeeez....still had 2 pitstops during a four miler on the TM this morning.
::good grief::

shelley and others who live in steamy climates:
how long till I acclimate!?!?!? of course, it would help if I actually went OUT and ran in the stuff. LOL

Today at 4am in madison, wi it was 70 degrees with 90% humidity with a dewpoint of 65%--> I am such a sissy that I went down and ran in the 'relative' comfort of our basement!
We keep the house at 75 with the A/C...but it's the humidity control that I appreciate! *OY*

Hi Shellie - actually I don't eat the granola bar until well after my morning run. I do watch the dairy - I very rarely have milk or ice cream anymore. I'm sure that may have added to my distress yesterday, but I don't know why I'm having troubles other days.

Do you guys have lower back pain too? This morning I ran 4.25 miles but had to run straight to the bathroom too once I got home. Stools are very loose - almost like when I take a correctol - which when I was younger and wanted to loose weight - I was a little too dependent on too.

I'm going to call the doctor today and start the process - oh boy.

Hopeful-Good luck. I do have lower back pain when I have a bad UC flareup.

Karen-I have never lived in any other kind of weather, so I really can't tell you how to acclimate yourself to it, other than easing into it by running slower and a shorter time. Do you take water with you? I do at times like this. I even take it with me when it's not sunny out and just humid. You don't have to just drink it, you can pour it over your arms and face when you need to. I always wear a hat to soak up the sweat on my head.

Ran 7 this morning, but it was in water on the streets. We are under water in my subdivision. I had to drive my car and park it somewhere in order to run. I was going to go farther, but my stomach started cramping. I didn't really eat a complete dinner last night- just snacking, so I'm thinking that had something to do with it.

wow shelley that's HORRIBLE about the flooding...is your home okay? Hey, at least you could finally get out and run.

I had very little sleep last night and woke up in a bad mood....

did not want to tackle the heat, humidity, AND colon issues outdoors, so just did 5.5 on the TM [with one po0op stop]

On monday I'm leaving to Alaska for two weeks; there will be only a couple opportunities for a jog....I told my sis that I will not be going out with her due to my issues.
In addition, I'm already worried about all of the hiking we'll be doing, and the constant "where's the portojohn" question....*sheesh*

have a good weekend

Karen-Are you going on a cruise to Alaska? I have a friend leaving here going on the Alaskan cruise. I think it's next week.

I forgot to tell you that when I ran today a man was walking 3 bullmastiffs. Those dogs are huge. Well, I avoided him when I started running down that street, but when I was returning, I couldn't avoid him. He was stopped with the dogs to let me by. Well, they jumped at me, he fell down and 1 of them bit me in the stomach. I didn't say anything about it to him, I just asked if he was okay. It wasn't a deliberate bite, just a snip. Now my stomach is sore where the bite is.

Hi All,

The Northeast came out of March and into June violently last weekend!

It was HOT for a half marathon in VT on Sunday. I doubled up on the Immodium just in case and found I felt awful when we got home, 3 hours post race.

Has anyone else had this problem with Immodium. It delays the inevitable complete evac. and slows things down, but makes you feel awful until then.

Runs on Tuesday and Thursday resulted in quick trips to the john upon returning home. (heat, too little water?)

Today was okay post run until I had some dairy with out taking lactase enzyme.

WTPJ aka Karen, Good luck with the timing! It helps me a lot to be able to run around my BMs...(Sorry so punny) Hope you have a great visit with your sister on your trip.

Yogini-I don't take immodium, but I would think doubling up on it would tend to make you nauseaus.

I'm going to try for 10 or 12 today. The standing water has gone down somewhat.

shelley,
Our trip is partially in Denali, and partially on the Yorktown Clipper [not a cruise ship/it's an inside-passage ship]
More of a nature hiking/site seeing trip than a cruise...it's a pretty bare-boned ship.

Hope all on this thread find more answers to our issues....I'll "see" you back here on June 25th.

cheers

Hi Shelley,

My GI guy didn't think it was a bad idea to use the Immodium prophylactically for races.

Considering how lousy I felt, I'm going to try harder with timing and avoid the stuff as much as possible.

I hope you aren't swamped with mosquitoes now that it has stopped raining.

We seem to have gone from temperate rainforest weather to a hot and dry summer.

I just wish New Englanders would learn to do AC comfortably!
In that regard, I actually miss VA in the summertime. We'll be back sown soon enough and I'll totally commiserate with your very early runs in FL!

I have to say,

There is something compelling about people discussing this subject in a straightforward, nonjudgemental, mature manner. I applaud you guys for having the guts (or maybe large intestine? bad joke) to put it out there like that. I think there is a puritanical resistance in this country (and perhaps elsewhere) to talk openly about subjects like poop and sex. Good for you for bringing it out into the open.

In addition, I really commend you for managing to keep up a training program in spite of your difficulties. I've had only minor intestinal issues, mainly during long runs, and I don't know what I would do if I were faced with it every single run. You deserve an award!

Yogini-The mosquitoes are horrible here. I normally spray myself and clothes down completely before my run. Then it's a trip to the bathroom again, and out the door!

I was able to do 5 yesterday afternoon without any problems. I was sweating it because I had stomach issues all day long.

Been a while since I posted, but I have good news I went on a 10 mile run weeks ago... and decided to eliminate quite a bit from my diet, to see if it had an effect. Normally, I have a beer or two on Sat night, but stop before midnight (hoping that it would be enough). Then I'd have milk in the morning, and possibly some caffine (soda). So this time, I went without alcohol Saturday night, skipped the cereal (and all dairy) in the morning, and had no caffine. I'm proud to say, I made it the WHOLE 10 MILES without a cramp or pitstop!! The only thing that hurt when I got home were my legs, from finally having made the distance for the first time! So out of those three items, all had the potential to be a trigger for me. I'll still play with it... but I think the beer was a huge one, as well as the caffine. I noticed that the days I had the worst cramps/issues were the days I had coffee or soda the most... so I think caffine is a big no-no for me. Dairy has always been a little iffy for me, even when I'm not running... so I'll just stick with taking out those three for now, since it works! Goin for 7 miles this Sunday, with the same regimen... here's hoping it's cramp free again!!
