Mr Lambchops : As of now I am not planning any walking breaks for the 5k. I have done 2 training 5k run and I can really do it without breaks. But... I will have to see what happens after the big hill at the start of the race! That's the big thing I am thinking about right now. I might have to walk a little bit in the hill. And there is always the fact that I will be running a little bit faster... The only thing I know is that I will be last for the 5k but I don't care, I'll still have a PR and a great first race to talk about for the rest of my life! And I'll have the Cool Running gang and a couple of friends on site so I know that finishing the race will be the only way out Any ------------------ There is nothing you can't see yourself doing.

hey everyone,i was thinking of doing a local 10k really soon. i originally planned to run one in the fall, when i've got more miles in my legs, but, what the hell, i'm going to take the plunge and pop the racing cherry. so, any suggestions for upcoming events? i see that there's one this weekend in ste-therese and one the next weekend in st-lazare. are they good courses to start on? or does it even matter?

That hill is right at the beginning, which is a good thing because you'll be all excited about running your first 5k and won't find it that hard. But to be sure, you might want to run it a little bit slower.

RG : Don't worry, for sure I'll run the hill slower!! Otherwise I'll have to walk the rest of the 4.5 k... or the 10k runners will run over my dead body!!!! Any ------------------ There is nothing you can't see yourself doing. [This message has been edited by lifeany (edited Apr-30-2007).]

Lot's of memories, indeed. quote: Originally posted by Mercury1 Sad news Chops....the YMCA race was cancelled without warning. I was going to run a 10K but the organizer hasn't been at work for two months.
What? That's not possible. They can't do this. Mars, Chops, we have to do something. Two more things I would like to share about yesterdays race: First, I have to thank all the brave citizens of Duisburg who got out there hoses. This was really refreshing and helpfull. Second, Saturday afternoon I found out that the store where I buy my groceries has stopped to sell peanutbutter. Imagine my horror, when I learned that I had to go out for a race without any peanut butter in my stomach. I think, this shed a totally new light on my performance. RG, couldn't you come to Germany to run some races in your Mr. Peanut outfit? That might boost the peanut butter sales and make it more accessible. Several of you have noticed my silence about my leg problems. Thanks for caring. Indeed, my shin was silent during the race. However, today it's acting up again, as it did after all longer runs recently. I will stop running for one or two weeks and try to work on the imbalance with some yoga exercises. Then I will start again, very carefully and slowly. Take care Ralf P.S.: Sally, it was nice to see you waiting at the finish line. Why don't you wear the same custom as yesterday. Especially the hat was funny. ------------------ Follow your nose

Hi...can I join. I am in montreal, 33, single mom of a 7 y/o boy and a 6 month old girl. I do technical drafting but right now I am on maternity leave and was about to have a nervous breakdown if I didn't started to run and I am at week 4 of the C25K training. So I am a real amateur LOL. I found out that I love running!!! Hard to believe...I hated running since I was in high school. I think I will do a 5k run after week 9!!! Do you have any good links where I can see all the runs around here.Thank you yanicka

Hi, & welcome Yanicka. Well, it's official, I have registered for the 10k in Ottawa. I only did it to keep up with Mrs. JB!!
I also mentioned that I would post the site for a colleague here at work. She is part of the Montreal Dragon boat club, but is also a part of the national team that has won gold at last years world championchips. Apparantly the girl can row. Anyway, her club is holding a fundraiser running event. A 22km relay consisting of 4 members - each member running one of the following distances - 10k, 5k, 5k, 2k. Anyway, here is the site: http://www.themontrealdragonboatclub.com/Femme/en/html/financement.php Anyway, talk to you all soon, -M Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped. Hey TB. You've convinced me. I've signed up for the YMCA run, but in the 10K. Also, for the St. Therese 10K this weekend and the St. Lazare 10K later on. As you can see, I love to race!

Hey Merc, TB convinced me as well!I'm going to sign up for the Parc Maisonneuve 10k also. As for any other races, well, we'll see after May 12... Oh yeah, how do you (anyone) warm up for a race? I've read a couple of articles saying running up to 5ks is supposed to be really good, but damn... that seems like a lot. And you don't really need to taper for a 10k, right? NOOB

Hey Kingsley, I won't pretend I know anything about road races. But for your first race a 5 k warmup is a bit excessive. Thats probably more for the speedsters like Mercury ,TB and the rest of the gang who are going to attack the race all out and will need a good warmup to prevent injury. As far as taper goes just make sure you take it easy for a few days and keep the legs fresh for race day. (One of) My problem is that I never really rest enough (properly taper) and fall flat on my face when it comes down to road races. Good luck to you in your first race. Welcome Yanicka Roly

I agree with Roly that 5k is probably too much. My problem is that very often I arrive so late at the site that I have to run to get my bib and everything. That's then my warmup. Once, I litterally had to run top get to the starting line in time (TB & Mars, you remember?) quote: Originally posted by kingsley zissou: And you don't really need to taper for a 10k, right?
I use the following rule of thumb, I read once: 1 day of taper for every 2km of race distance. Makes five days of taper for a 10k. On the other hand, taper does not mean no running at all. It means to take it easy (as Roly said) and to avoid long stressful runs.Just my 0.02$ Ralf ------------------ Follow your nose

the shorter the race, the more you need to warm up!

Every rule of thumb has its range of application. Mine is for typical road races. It's neither good for ultra's nor for short distance track races. No, I don't recommend it for 100m sprints neither.

KZ (Kinsley): As for taper, you can run a bit more easy this week, it won't hurt and I'm a big fan of no running the day before the race. As for 5k run before the race, I would not do that. Take time to stretch, then run a bit just to warm up.
