SS: Big hugRan this morning with a new running mate (co-worker from a previous job) for an hour. Ran the gym to Lafontaine park along Sherbrooke and returned via Rachel-Olmstead-Snake. The wind and rain made for less than ideal conditions but what this otherwise vanilla run interesting was that he lead the charge at a brisk pace whilst talking throughout the run. Being 20 years my senior, I tried my best to mask the pain with a contrived smile. Not as painful as track workout but definitely more than a leisurely jog. I think I've found my ideal mid week running partner TB

Be careful, that's what I did the first time I ran with you and I ended up with a strained jaw that lasted for a whole week, remember? Big hugs to you, Sally xxxx

Truxx, welcome back. I think I've gotten that cold maybe flu. Fever, headaches, phlem, dry cough, feel like crap. ran 2.2 miles this morning and everything just shut down. I'll rest a few days and hopefully feel better soon. So This week-end I will be (hopefully) running the mountain trails again solo. Gro is going away. So who is interested in trail running 101 this week-end nice and slow. Saturday afternoon or Sunday Morning. Let me know. TB I really liked that article, I'll file it with the one I sent you this week. Take care. Roly [This message has been edited by rolyone (edited May-16-2007).]

"Einstein discovered the theory of relativity, according to the book, by breaking rules that other scientists were unable to break because their preconceived ideas got in the way.""Obviously, the more untrained you are, the more you can expect to improve by increasing your mileage." Wow, this was plagiarized right out of Silly Sally's Guide to Guerilla Racing! Sally p.s. I have a theory on this. But before we discuss the merits of mileage, I`d like to say this: let`s not count the amount of mileage we are doing but time spent running. I believe the articles is meant best for elite athletes for whom more mileage translates to better times mainly because if they were to run the same mileage as us, they`d be spending a lot less time on their feet than we are... 10K is roughly a 35 minute jog... I think there`s a certain amount of time spent running that can translate into faster times but it`s a better indicator than actual mileage, at least for non-elite athletes. Clearly there are other factors... but let`s not forget how much more distance they are covering for the same time spent running.

OK I have to admit that I hadn't completely read the article when i wrote my reply and I just skimmed down to read this:"However, the time spent running may be more important than the mileage, since a fast runner will run that distance much quicker than a slow runner. Humans may have a maximum training volume they can undertake and I think it’s close to 75 to 100 miles per week. Your body simply can’t absorb any more training volume without breaking down." which summarizes my thoughts exactly!

This is so funny, I've just read the article and I was going to paste the same excerpt.
I completely agree with DR on that. Running 30km for an elite doesn't take as much time as for John and Jane Doe. Even 75 miles per week is a lot of mileage. I never ran more than 90 km per week during marathon training. Sure, the extra mileage help me, my recent race results prove it. But I think that if I run more than 100 km per week, I'll get tired, bored and prone to injuries. For me, 75 to 90 km per week means 6 days running at least 11 km per day. I don't complain, I love running, but not too much running.

Hey Roly and anyone else,Are you hitting the trails on Sunday morning? I'd like to do a couple laps. Early morning would suit me just perfectly. Meet at the cemetary gates... reminds me of a Smiths song. Anyone remember Morissey?

Training at the MAA tomorrow... Hard to find a pool open, free and empty during the long weekend! Anyone racing this weekend? Where?Just wondering... JB, SS, anyone else... do you know where in mtl we can enter cycling races for the general population (ie: Jane Doe like me)? And how does that work afterwards, I mean the traffic at the food table must be horrible... do they just sorta get outta there right after or do they get off their bikes and stroll around?
