Some of us have natural speed (Merc, Gro, Truxx), others have natural endurance (me, Gro). Some of us are just plain silly (me, Gro, Roly)I don't think there are any finite answers to training vs. results. By my training, I shouldn't have been able to do the time I did with IM, heck, I shouldn't even have been able to finish. I beat TB's MAA friend who trained well and does 3:30 marathons ... how's that? I just try to have fun albeit the pain. Sally ------------------ "Follow your bliss" My Ironwoman Inklings

SS: Simple: Same reason why I fall apart in the second half of my marathons: Tactics. Despite the self professed lack of training, your skill as tactician translates into results during these events. Ability to pace and proper nutrition are examples of key strengths that you leverage masferfully. Now imagine what could be accomplished those skills were blended with a methodical training program.Best, TB

Just to clarify, Not Silly enough to run the NYC Marathon dressed as Captain Canuck. And as for natural Endurance and Speed, I'll show you, I'll show you All, Mohahaha, cough, cough gasp

Yes, I am really starting to understand the negative split ... Hawaii, Ironman, Quebec half, NYC ... I just try to listen to my body - stops me from cursing. Roly: We are all proud of you for incorporating rest into your training ... it's doing you good! Sally p.s. I'm still trying to figure out what to wear for Ottawa, which will be really slow as I've gained more weight recently ... ugh. ------------------ "Follow your bliss" My Ironwoman Inklings

Merc: Marathons are addictive, aren't they? Like chips, how can you have just one?Today was too friggin' hot to run just over 20k with hills. Especially with that blazing midday sun. Had to walk the steep parts and had to take a few short walk breaks too. Had electrolyte drink and ate some granola bars and still wanted to pass out from time to time. Legs were sluggish and heavy, ugh. Sally ------------------ "Follow your bliss" My Ironwoman Inklings

Lifeany,Good luck in your first 5 k, The only advise I have is enjoy the experience, relax and run your own race. KZ, Good luck to you tomorrow in your 10 k race, My advise to you is line up right behind Mercury grab onto his shirt tight and hang on for your life. Should be over in a few minutes. Good luck to the rest of you too. Roly

LifeAny. I have the privilege of attending your graduation ceremony tomorrow evening *sniff* My baby is all grown up!Things to bring: Watch Confirmation of registration (if you registered on line) Change of clothes and shoes Combination locik (perhaps there are day lockers) Positive attitude Smile (for the camera as you cross the finish line) Money (post race munchies...) Band-aids. Oh wait, that's me... Review the course map before the event. You don't want to take a right when you should have taken a left and end up running the 10km. Note that the first 2km of the race is uphill. So budget your effort accordingly. Apply SS's patented "Negative split"® strategy. Order now in 3 easy payments of $19.95 + shippng and handling. Hahahahaha, I don't think so, Roly. Is your advice to hang onto Merc's shirt kind of like when you told me to take that blind right turn on the mountain? Or off the mountain to be more accurate... Hey TB, I will definitely go for the negative split, especially since there are hills. Had I known there would be hills, I probably wouldn't have registered! For those going to the 5:30 rendezvous at the metro, should I get my race kit (number bib, chip thing, etc.) BEFORE or AFTER we meet?

http://www.ymcamontreal.qc.ca/deficourse/Carte-defi-printemps.jpgthe 10k looks confusing to me. is there a short loop in the first 3k's? won't it get messy where the two loops meet up?

KZ: Whine, whine, whine. Would you like some cheese with that whine? G'wan big guy, head up, you love hills right? Didn't you run a bunch of 'em last weekend with Roly and Grommit? So what's wrong with racing 'em? It'll make us tougher and put some hair on your chest. Being asian. lord knows we could use some. The idea in mind was to pickup the package after we meet at the metro. It should not take that much time to drop off our bags and retrieve the timing chip. It appears that there will be traffic and confusion when the front runners complete the first loop and encounter the last of wave of runners (just before the, "Y" split leading toward the 2 and 4km marker) exists. Then again, it depends on the number of participants. Bah... too much thinking. I'll stick with the 5km. Nice and straight forward. Good luck to everyone running tormorrow. TB

TB: You crack me up ... I still feel the regular pain in the second half, just stronger mentally to overcome it and push through. We need someone to write a summary of who's racing what, who's spectating, where the race start is, who is meeting where ... Right now it's spread out in several e-mails ... confusing. LifeAny: My words to you ... do not look at the others when you start. Just let them do their thing. Keep them as peripheral and concentrate. You might get the feeling that you're hardly moving, but you are ... it's all just relative since those around you will be moving too. Just run your own race and be conservative for the first half. I think if you've got it in you to speed up, wait until the 3k mark, speed up a bit, then at 1k, you could speed up more if you felt good. We're all going to be cheering you on. Merc & TB: You don't need my words of encouragement ... you're both already awesome! KZ: You will do fine ... I hear from Grommie that you're a mighty fine runner. And your weekly mileage already way surpasses my dismal amount ... Have fun tomorrow! Who else is racing? Sally ------------------ "Follow your bliss" My Ironwoman Inklings

Hey kiddo, you’re on a roll today. Good luck to you, and other cool runners on Saturday evening. I think that Mercury is going to Ste Therese on Sunday am. Looking forward to reading all about it.I had thought I could possibly be part of the cheering section but moving in a week and not much done. Roly & Gro – have a good, very, very long tomorrow. Lots to eat and drink, and no, Rol that doesn't include de fizzed beer

Actually Df, it's St. Lazare. St. Therese was last Sunday, but who's counting anyway. Maybe Saturday night as well. We'll see.

Not if DR is around, I highly doubt that food can travel fast enough to hit the ground in her presence.

Hey Roly and Grommit, have a good run tomorrow! I guess you won't be on the mountain again on Sunday then?Hey tuberculosis, I'm one Asian fellar who's got plenty of chest hair. I think tey're going to get plucked hard on Saturday. Five seconds? I ate a pork loin after it was on the floor for five days! :-) Sal, your advice to Any sounds really good. I'll run my own race also! I was totally wondering where to start. I had a plan of sizing up other runners and finding a spot where I would "belong" - I was going to look for black dress socks and cargo shorts!
