I am traveling to Carmel (by the sea) in California for a vacation week and need to find some good places to run. I will be running three 6 miles days and one 18 mile day.Can anyone recommend some good trails/roads in that area? We are staying in the heart of town and I've read that the roads in that area are small, congested and don't have sidewalks. I am hoping for some paths or scenic roads that head out away from downtown area. I really want to be able to start running right out my door in the morning and not have to drive to a good spot. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

My knowledge of Carmel is rusty (from several years ago) but your impression of the city is correct, unless it has changed drastically.Unfortunately, you may have to drive a bit to get away from those narrow streets. I know of a trail race held there annually (http://www.pctrailruns.com/Carmel_Valley.htm) but you have to drive a few miles inland to get there. Also, the Big Sur HM Monterey Bay is run near there in October, but that goes through the Pacific Grove/Monterey area. In fact, your best running around there might be through the PG/Monterey area in general - if any locals know any differently, I'd love to hear it myself.

Point Lobos, is a great place to run, figure it will take about 2 - 3 miles, depending on where you stay in Carmel to get there, which might solve your 18 miler. Just be very, very careful running along Highway 1, speed limit is 55mph, so figure folks are cranking along above that, but the shoulder is very wide. Check out this site Trails.com http://www.trails.com/activity.asp?area=14516 Check out the places they suggest. Also check out Roach Canyon park.
