The other Raleigh thread had just too many posts so I decided to start a new 2007 thread. You can reference the old thread under this link.

http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum10/HTML/002481-46.shtml

I will start it off by saying I am sidelined with a broken foot. I am out till atleast February. So good luck to everyone else who is still healthy. There are not many races in the Raleigh Area in January and February so it might be March before everyone gets back into racing.

Figures you'd beat me to it. I just notice the BEER thread (in Carbo Canteen) was restarted under BEER 2007, and I was going to propose the same thing here. I guess great minds think alike <g>?

Sorry to hear about your foot, but now you can say you've got a couple of things in common with Lance Armstrong. You've both felt the wrath (albeit in different ways) of the marathon when it feels it hasn't been given enough respect. On the other hand, nothing great was ever accomplished by anyone who was not dreaming great dreams.

The spring racing season does seem a bit limited around here, doesn't it, especially compared to the fall season.

I'm still toying with doing a spring half-marathon - maybe Myrtle Beach, maybe Eugene, OR (essentially my home town). I've been trying to get in 9-10 mile long runs so that I don't have to start from scratch getting ready for them, but I really need to make up my mind soon.

Hope the new year gets better for you than what it's started out with.

JDF - was it a stress fracture, or something to do with the timing chip or something?

Whichever, sorry man... That's a bummer! I haven't been running too much either, for various reasons, but will hopefully get back in the swing soon enough.

So what races are you guys planning? I'll be doing the Umstead Trail Marathon on 3/10, but it will just be a very long run on the way to the Nashville marathon on 4/28. I may do the Myrtle Beach half in the same manner. I'd like to do a 5k in January or February, but it has to be on a Sunday, since my kids play basketball on Saturday. After Nashville, maybe the Kerr Lake Olympic Triathlon in June, maybe not, depending on if I can get motivated to get on a bike.

After that, who knows? I've only really raced a few 5ks, and now I'd like to post times at all distances from mile to marathon. I am assured of getting a lot of PRs this year.

BrookT-

JDF posted the full diagnosis on the old thread before he started the new one!
I haven't run many shorter races lately. I ran one 5k and one 10k last year. My times were 21:28 and 43:30 (I think!) I hope to do more this year. I know speedwork (which I haven't done) is necessary to do well at the shorter distances. Why do you ask? just curious?

bonesheal -

I am doing the Uwharrie mountain run (only the 20 miler) in Feb. and the Umstead marathon in March. And more than likely Boston in April. I haven't looked into the local race calendar for shorter races yet!

Catching up...

JDF, sorry to hear about your foot. I hope you'll be up and running again before too long! And thanks for starting a new thread!

bonesheal, if you haven't registered for Country Music Marathon yet, you can use the discount code "conquer" at checkout time for a $15 discount. (There was a promo flyer in my Marine Corps goodie bag.) Worked like a charm for me! If you need a 5k on Sunday this winter, try the Run for the Roses 5k on February 11.

bit, my congrats as well on an impressive performance in 2006. Can't wait until I'm able to just go out an run marathons on a whim! Were you the poster with Knoxville connections last year?

Unfortunately, the RITNY 5k on Saturday (Lake Crabtree, sponsored by the Cary YMCA) was cancelled because of low registration. Too bad, cause that's a nice run. They don't know yet if it will be back next year.

OK, I'm on my way out to Orlando to run with the Mouse this weekend. Details next week if my feet survive.

Thanks! Yes, I lived in Knoxville for ~6 years before I moved to NC.

Good luck at Disney!

Me too! I was born in Knoxville and lived there till I was 10. I moved back there 3 years later and lived there for another 4 years. I still go back a few times a year to visit family. It is quite a nice town that has changed a lot in the last 10 years. I have never run there though. I might change that this year. I have been eyeing several races there.

Hello Raleigh Runners,

I'm new to the area. Relocated with my company.

I need some race info...I'm looking for a large local race that raises money for a cause. My company (being somewhat new to the area as well) is looking for a run/walk that we can sponsor or participate in.

Any links you use or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Joe

bitbit,
I'll see you at Umstead.

Misterfun,
Thanks for the code--it saved me $15! Run for the Roses has been canceled, unfortunately. I think I won't get a 5k in before my marathon.

ncrunner334,
You're about my size and speed--I'll watch this space for your progress.

"I'm looking for a large local race that raises money for a cause."

The "Big One" locally is the Susan Komen Run for the Cure. It generally takes place late May or early June and starts (and ends) on the Meredith College campus. There's a women's 5k, an "open" competitive 5k, and the fun run/walk 5k. Last year the guy that finished the fun run first crossed the finish line before the last starter had crossed the starting line.

The number two event is probably the Old Reliable 5k/10k in the fall that supports the United Way (I believe). After that, there are a lot of smaller races that support different causes. The big racing season here seems to me to be the fall, however, although you can find a few races almost throughout the year - especially if you're willing to travel 50-100 miles.

I personally find www.runnc.com to have the most complete list of local races, but I'm not sure even it is complete.

Yeah just a little shorter and now a little heavier. After the Chicago Marathon I set out to regain some of the lean mass I burnt during marathon training.
I cut the running down and eventually all the way out during the month of December. I'm now up to 205. (although my body fat has decreased from where I was at even during peak miles)
Now that we are in January I have started adding the miles back in. I'll be running a 10k, a 15k, and the Flying Pig Marathon this spring. I'm going to work to keep the weight on so that I can race as a Clydesdale. If I can post a decent time I can place pretty high in the 200+ category.

From what I see on your profile we do have pretty similar goal times.

bit - I was just curious. I figured that you run so many marathons that your aerobic capacity is probably fully developed. I wanted to plug the shorter race times into a calculator to confirm that, which I did, and you have your times, from 5K to marathon within range of each other - so, yeah, a few months of dedicated speed work and you'd be a monster at some of the shorter distances. You could probably go under 20 for the 5K, or close to it.

Why was Run for the Roses cancelled? That's one of the oldest races around and usuallly gets a good turnout despite crummy weather.

Bit, I think your stategy for running a marathon prevents you from getting burned out. By setting a comformatbale pace at the beginning, you ensure a strong finish. Sometimes I get so caught up in performance that I push too hard when I'm fresh at the start and then struggle towards the end of the race. If I ever run another marathon, I might run it without a watch.

I am sorry to hear about run the for roses race being cancelled. I wrote someone from NC road runners club to ask why. I'll let you know if I learn anything. I was thinking making this my firt race since coming back from my injuries. It was also my first race.

From Darrow Johnson:
Not cancelled. The course is moving to a downtown Raleigh location. The NCRC board is looking to also move it to an April date. The date should be finalized sometime in the next few days. Please check back on the NCRC web-site. Thanks for your interest and hope that you will be able to participate in the race this year.

In my opinion, this is the same as cancelling it. I liked the course and the date--made it the first race of the year.

If anyone wants to see the video from the run at the rock that was on the local PBS station just login to yousendit.com and download this file. The yousendit.com account is free. You can see how tough the course was from the video. Oh yea and the guy totally screws up and says a 5K is 3.2 miles!

I thought it was "Run for the Roses" because it was Valentine's weekend. And one more race in downtown Raleigh. Ho hum. I liked the fact it was in a different neighborhood than most races.

I guess I shouldn'rt complain before I see the new course

You guys still training? No posts for 4 days!

I gave up on trying to find a Sunday race and did a 3k today. I was hoping for a big leap in my equivalent 5k time, but I ran 11:23, which is not a big improvement. I ran a 11:31 in November off of about 35 mpw, and now I'm up in the 50s, but haven't realized the benefit yet.

Back from China. Running was not easy in Shanghai. We ran a couple of miles outside on the side walks and it was terrible. The streets and sidewalks were crowded and many of the sidewalks were under construction. I did the rest of my workouts in the hotel gym when I was in Shanghai. For one night we were in Wuhu city and running outside was better--less crowded. We ran about a mile up the street and found a park where hundreds of Chinese were excersising--in 32 degree weather! Good for them. We ran around the park and enjoyed the view. Crossing streets was the main problem. Traffic in China is at a "at your own risk" mentality. Drivers are agressive and there are hundreds of bikes and small motercycles to watch out for. Still, I loved the experience. Makes you appreciate what we have here.

Today a fun run on the Wake ATT. Tomorrow is a bike group ride. Beautiful weather. Umstead racers must be training well in this weather.

Bonesheal - we are all a bunch of slackers!

Kidding! But I have been trying to take it easy since the Frosty50 (50K) last weekend.

Bob - I did run in Umstead yesterday. The weather was wonderful and there were tons of people in Umstead. (I love seeing people out with their kids being active!) I'm sure it was similar on the ATT.

How is everyone else?

JDF, I am very sorry to hear about your injuries. I enjoy reading your posts, so I hope you won't be *too* much a stranger here:-)

I thought that I was going back to my other sport, roller derby. After taking a year off from derby to run, I realized a few things as I returned to skate practice. They are:
- Speed and endurance, no problem in regaining that
- Lower body strength and stability - Wow, compared to the other girls, I am way behind. It will take some time to regain this without hurting my self in the process.

Solution? Referee! I'll still skate, but I'll only be at 2/3 practices per week. The rest of the time I'll be running! (or in the gym) My goal for this year is to get that sub-26 minute 5K. I was so close last September, 26:04.

I'll be running an easy 5 miles at Lake johnson today. It seems like today will be the last of the warm weather, then it is back to January (brrrr).
Happy (late) New Year to you all!
