OK, now let's talk about hills. Saturday I went to Asheville for the Sunset Stampede, where you basically run up and down a mountain for 10 miles. Cute, quirkly little afternoon race that is part of the Mountain Sports Festival, which also includes a 10k trail run, an upstream kayak race and a downhill unicycle race. Less than 200 runners, with yours truly bringing up the near rear. Nice spirit for a small run, with enthusiastic volunteers and a very picturesque, if tough, course. (Thank goodness the rain stopped.) Five tough miles up and a still tough five miles down, but you get nice views of the Grove Park Inn, downtown Asheville, some beautiful mountain homes, and lots of blooming rhododendron and azaleas. I think they've had better t-shirts in past years, but nothing bad. I had hopes of breaking the 2-hour mark but wound up with 2:02. I'm sure my second half was faster than my first. :-)

Travis will love this elevation profile:

Oh, and since I have a running problem, I stopped in Winston-Salem that morning and did the Triad Race for the Cure. They have a brand new logo and t-shirt that is very different from years past; look for it when they come to Raleigh next month.

Brad, you are just sick! Do you ever stop running?

Yes 3000 feet in elevation change in 5 miles is just plain nuts! I bet there wasn’t anyone running that race with a stroller! I doubt even the best runners in the world could get a 75 lb stroller up that hill without stopping to walk or puke or both. How were the times on that race? Did anyone burn it up?

Did I mention that my legs hurt worse today then they did after the 10 miler in a strong headwind with no training, 14 mile trail-run through 6 inches of mud, and the marathon that reduced me to crawling! Those hills were no joke yesterday!

No strollers in this race. About four miles of the road were unpaved, so it wouldn't have been any fun with a stroller, plus some of the paved roads were pretty steep, both up and down. The winner ran 1:02, a sweet 6:16 pace overall, so his downhill miles were probably in the low 5's. The women's winner ran a 1:04.

Wow a 1:02 for a man on that course is pretty good. A 1:04 for a women is down right amazing. Who was she? It must have been someone who is ranked nationally.

Anne Lundblad, 40, from Swannanoa, NC.

Where is that national ranking, BTW? I want to see where I stand. :-)

Too many hills for me. I love the flat American Tobacco trail.

Brad, you are really knocking out some tough races!

I thought that the USATF kept rankings on road runners that are members. I couldn’t find it on their site though. Maybe you have to be a member to see it.

Regardless, she has to be one of the better runners in the State if not the country. I don’t know many women that can hold anywhere near a 6:30 uphill for 5 miles! And at 40 she has to be one of the best in her age group.

On a hunch I searched for Anne Lundblad. Yes she is a nationally ranked runner! And yes she is one of the best in the WORLD!

Yes, Anne Lundblad ( Previously Riddle) is one of two world-class ultraladies living in the mountains of North Carolina. Anne finished 2nd and was closing on the winner in the World Championship 100K a couple of years ago but she mainly runs trails. The other lady is Annette Bednosky. Annette won Western States two years ago in the 3rd fastest womens time ever. They are both training for WS now and it should be a very interesting race.

Her husband ain't too bad a runner, either. He won the Ridge To Bridge Marathon (the race where I got hurt). She was there, too, but didn't run.

brook, what'd you think of Ridge2Bridge? (other than getting hurt, of course :-) I have that on my list of marathons I'm interested in running, but this year it's the week before City of Oaks. I know it's spartan, but I kind of like quirky races like that. Worth keeping on the list, or would I be missing anything?

Hi Brad,

It's my one and only marathon, so I don't have much to compare it with, but in my opinion, it was a very well put on race. The race director was very personable and genuinely cared about the runners and worked very hard to make the event as enjoyable as possible. The course support was spartan, but the drink stations and the volunteers that staffed them were great. The post race was awesome - lots of good food in a nice setting with all the comradery that a small race fosters. There were only about 60 runners. The course was beautiful for the first 2/3rds or so - running down the mountainside from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The negatives:

Despite it's beauty, this course was a killer. It was extreme downhill for the first eight miles on a heavily cambered road (not really possible to run off of the side of the road). This is what injured me - the constant pounding downhill on that camber did me in. Many other people managed it ok, though, so part of my experience could have been simple newbie-ism.

After the downhills, you hit a particularly horrendous uphill at mile 18 (this is where the wheels fell off for me) and it rolls from there until the end. I would have quite at the top of mile 18 if there had been a sag wagon. I couldn't bring myself to stop at the drink station, however

The road was open to traffic, which wasn't a problem for the first half of the race, but an ever increasing rate of cars speeding by became tiresome and intimidating after a while, and when you hit the town, it was really unpleasant with all of the cars.

All in all, I really enjoyed myself despite having to hobble/walk/jog the final eight miles. This is a small race, though - very small - and the course is hard despite the promotion of it as a fast course.

I would run it again if it weren't for my injury. As it stands, I wouldn't risk it again. My next marathon will be rolling to flat.

bitbit ran this race, too - she may be able to offer an opinion, though I don't think she posts here anymore.

I don’t think GreeneHouse has posted here in a while. However, it looks like he has progressed nicely since last year. He won a race last weekend. Not to shabby! Go Paul!

I did the gmaps for the 5K this weekend in case anyone wants to make the trek to snowhill. This course is crazy flat! It only rises 44 feet through the whole 5K. I might run it without the kids. My wife laid the law down and said that 80+ miles each way is too far to take them. This would be a good course to see where I stand without the kids. If anyone wants to ride together let me know. Here is the approximate gmaps. The course is certified.

I don't have anything against Snow Hill, but there's also an inaugural 5k in Chapel Hill on Saturday. Endurance magazine has been promoting it as "Chapel Hill's premier running event", but there are a few sorority 5Ks in the winter that I like. :-) Their goal is to build up some running interest to the point that in 2008 they may host a half-marathon as part of the festivities around Chapel Hill's downtown.

I think $35 is a bit much for a 5k, but you know how expensive everything is in Chapel Hill. :-) Starting time is 8am, and it finishes a good quarter-mile from the starting area.

I put my race report from Saturday in the "Race Reports" thread. Check it out. The course was flat and fast but I think the results will surprise some people.

Travis - A 'quick' question: How do you train for running with the stroller? Do you take the empty stroller out with you on your training runs, or are the kids excited enough to go on them with you too? Just something that occured to me reading your latest race report - which, by the way, proves the old addage about racing the way you train.

Yes I train with the kids in the stroller. They absolutely love it because they know that they can take a nap. I don’t think I have ever run with them when they didn’t sleep in the stroller. I haven’t been training with them lately though. Now that the sun is coming up before 6:00 am I will definitely get them back into it. This will probably be my sons last year in the stroller. He is getting big enough to run on his own now! A 5K at 4 years old might be a little too young though!

Interesting race Travis. Thanks for a great report. Soon you'll be able to race regularly without the stroller--then when your ready you'll fly!

If you need an excuse to go to Asheville, I can heartily recommend the Biltmore Estates 5k/15k put on by the Asheville Kiwanis Club. I ran the 15k last Sunday morning and it was a very nice, well-organized and scenic race. Because of limited access to the property and facilities, they cap registration at 860 across both races, and it was sold out well in advance.

The entire 15k course is on the Biltmore Estate, starting at the Winery, going by the Deerpark Inn, winding around the approach roads and parking lots, going up to and by the main house, back through the gardens and finally following the French Broad River back to the finish at the Winery. Very pretty and very scenic -- but a tough course. The second, fourth, and fifth miles are mostly uphill (the third is downhill) and you'll be relieved when you reach the top of the property, knowing that what lies ahead of you is mostly downhill. Running by the front of the house was a treat, but you don't spend a whole lot of time there because the approach area is kind of small. (This is a point where a race photographer would make good money.) I enjoyed running through the walled garden, by the conservatory and around the azalea garden. (The 5k course is back and forth along the river; very flat, but only a glimpse of the back of the house.)

The volunteers were numerous and enthusiastic, which was good because there are absolutely no spectators on the course except for the Biltmore staff here and there. Access to the property is still tightly controlled on race morning, and registration for the race does not include access to the house or any other attractions. Still, the Kiwanis Club put on a great race with smooth registration, pickup and race day organization. The age group winners received nice medals, and the distribution of the winners -- Raleigh, Apex, Asheville, Tennessee, Georgia, even Las Vegas -- shows that people come from all over for this event. Good t-shirts, too. And the early morning start (7:15) leaves the rest of the day open for more mountain sightseeing.

Well worth having on your "to-do" race list, just prepare for the hills. :-)

Brad, is there any race you won’t run?

Bob,
Yea I was racing my son around our house last night. We started off and I let him get ahead of me. I was running slowly so that he would have a chance to beat me. The funny thing was that he was pulling away from me quite steadily. I had to actually run to keep up with him. We raced around the house(about 50 yards) at least 10 times in a row and he wasn’t even winded. He has some incredible running ability. Reminds me of someone else! I was 9 when I used to run like that though. He is still just 3.5 years old. Go figure his favorite game is tag at school!

It really is funny how much kids are like their parents. I used to spend my entire recess everyday running around a track when I was only 9 years old! I think I was running about 20 mpw back then. That is twice as much as I do right now. It won’t be long before my son is asking to go for a training run!
