I saw Travis at the start and end of the Cary Road Race today. He was flying, which he credited to pushing only one of his kids today. *grin*I had a PR of 43:30 or so. However, as I was finishing I heard someone say they thought the 10k was short. Travis and I agreed after the race. We were thinking about .25 mile short at the time. However, I just pulled up the course certs for the 5k and 10k and I think I know what happened: http://usatf.org/events/courses/maps/showMap.asp?courseID=NC05015PH http://usatf.org/events/courses/maps/showMap.asp?courseID=NC05016PH I'm pretty sure we got turned around on Ederlee at the 5k turn-around point instead of the 10k turn-around point. If I'm doing my math right, that means we basically ran two 3 miles loops, plus the ~ 1/10th of mile spur at the end, so we ran 6.1 miles instead of 6.2 I don't see how we could've run a whole .25 mile short unless they really botched the Ederlee turn-around. Anyway, I was aiming for a 45 minute race which I think I would've had at the proper distance, so I'm happy. It'll be interesting to see what the results say. j.

Jay, nice to hear your race report. I met Travis for the first time and Jason was a real hoot. Travis did a great job out there. Jay, short or not, you were flying!Looks like the 5k was short also. My time was two minutes below were it should have been. Two friends who ran the 5k confirmed the same--all our times were over two minutes too fast. Hard to believe they can screw up these races. I heard from two other runners that the 5k Oaks was too long--but not by much. They estimated 15 seconds. Went out for a fast bike ride after the race. Felt good. Trying to get a good workout since the rain will keep me indoors tomorrow. Thinking about seeing a doctor to look at my ankle. The arthritis is getting worse and I worried that if this progresses I will not be able to run in the future. If something can be done, better to do it now. I'm hoping to be able to run a 5K by fall.

Well that was a fun race today! I was a little worried about it because the old Cary road race course was my favorite. I couldn’t talk my wife into letting me take the double for a 10K so I wussed out and decided to push Jason in the single. That actually was a smart move. Doubling the number of kids triples the effort and quadruples the likelihood of having to stop to attend to their needs.I started up front as usual(I don’t like crowds). Jason was screaming “Go, Daddy go, Go Daddy go” for the first 2.5 miles. I could tell some of the front runners were not to excited about that for the first half mile or so. I was holding a good pace until the first hill. I made it up the hill and felt pretty good. Since that was the only hill on the course I knew this was going to be fast race. I hit the first mile marker in 6:15 including that steep hill. That was pretty good. We came to the first turn around marker and I thought shouldn’t we be going further than this. However, the road was blocked off and it was clear where they wanted you to turn around so I shrugged it off. I picked up some serious speed on the downhill. I was probably under a 5:00 minute pace for that section. Then we hit the second mile marker and I heard “11:49, 11:50, 11:51”. I thought could it be? My first sub 12 minute 2 mile? I checked my watch and that is what I had so I thought man I must have been absolutely flying down that hill? I kept pushing(literally) thinking I might have a shot at the sub 40 10K! We got to mile 5 and I heard “30:24, 30:25, 30:26”! I know I yelled in excitement a bit at that point. I couldn’t believe it. I knew I was going to break 40 then. I really started pushing hard but there was a fierce wind on the back mile that actually slowed me down more than the hills. As I came up to the finish line I saw 38:50 and I screamed “I did it”! I couldn’t believe it, I knew it was too good to be true though. As they were posting the race results Jim Young confirmed that indeed we had turned around at the intersection instead of continuing on the extra .8-.10 miles. By my estimates the 10K was short by .32-.40 miles. That probably removed 2:30 off of my time. Still a 41:20 with the single is not too bad considering I had the stomach bug this week. I actually raced 1 more mile today than I trained all week! Once I really get back into the Marathon training I know I will be able to go for my goals. I am probably 95% of where I was before the Marathon already and I only average 9 miles a week right now. Just think what will happen when I get back to 40-50 MPW! Now for the real story. My wife ran the 5K. You all probably already know that she has been training very hard for the last two months. And she has been shaving crazy amounts of time off of her PR each week. Well I told her that the course was fast and that she should go all out and try for a sub 24:00. She did it and she obliterated that mark. She ran a 23:11 for the 5K. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe that she had shaved 3 minutes off of her PR in a single race and that she had PR by more than 1 minute in 4 consecutive races! Now the truth is that the 5k course was also short by .16 miles but I just didn’t have the heart to tell her that. She tried so hard and she was so excited. I just told her great job and that I was proud of her. Anyway, it will be tough when the next race comes around and she realizes how hard the 23:00 really is. She is working hard at it so I think she will be able to do it legitimately anyway. Great racing out there today! I met so many people today it is hard to keep everyone straight! Let’s all try to do the Race for Grace together. It is one of the faster 5Ks in Raleigh and it is a terrific event! See you at the races! ------------------ My Profile [This message has been edited by JasonsDrivingForce (edited Apr-14-2007).]

Sorry to hear about your back. That sounds like a really bad injury. I hope you recover quickly. It is a shame that a lot of people are hurt right now. There are some great races. Stay healthy, hope to see you guys soon.

The Cary Road Race results are up http://www.active.com/results/viewresults.cfm?e_id=1368485I think I was right behind RunBobaluRun on the second lap of the lake, if you were in red and wearing a running belt with drinks on it. You ended up passing me right after the guy announcing times on the far side of the lake from the start/finish. I'm also pretty sure I saw JDF since you say you were up front with a stroller. Yellow on the stroller with plastic all around it? I only saw you on the downhill of the first lap and never again. According to my Nike+ setup, the 10K course was basically a full kilometer off. There are 3 races next weekend! Which one to choose? I might try the run for wildlife 5K. I will go for a pr in the 5K on that one probably. Anyone care to join me? ------------------ My Profile

I added the Run for Wildlife elevations to the list above. It looks like this might actually be the flattest course in Raleigh! The whole thing only rises and falls a total of 40 feet and there are no steep hills on the whole thing. I might take the easy route and just run with my daughter in the single stroller this weekend. I don’t think the course is wide enough for the double. Anyway this might be a good race to PR on.http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=864962 ------------------ My Profile

Travis and Brad, thanks for your work on listing out the races and the course descriptions. Very helpful. Swatkins, looking forward to hearing your possible upcoming 5k race--keep me posted. Good to see your getting back to running again--one step at a time. I rested Saturday, after racing and a fast bike ride, and when I sat up my hamstrng was so tight I was limping. It is much better today, but it is still sore. I need to make this a hard week in preparation for the Riverwood sprint tri 4/28, but I also want to stay injury free. So I am walking a fine line here. It looks like the 10K course was .34 Miles short or 5.86 miles in total. That would have put my 10K time at about 41:13 which is right where I thought I should have been. Here is an email from the person who coordinated the race.It appears that the 10K was about .34 miles short. Our staff used the wrong course markings for the turnaround (we have two certified 10K courses at the amphitheatre sites and it appears that they did not look at the correct map).

Travis, does the race coordinator have a distance for the 5k race?My hamstrng is still out of wack. Tried to do some sprint work this morning and had to turn the run into a jog. My plan is to do no sprint work probally up to the race. I will probally just jog a few times this week. Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob,Sorry I did not ask about the 5K. My gmaps predictions were pretty close to what the coordinator said though. Based on that I think the 5K was between .14 and .16 miles short. That fits right in with the time my wife had expected to run. Sorry to hear about your injury. Man it really stinks that a lot of people are injured right now. Take it easy and I hope it heals quickly. Thankfully I have almost completely recovered from my broken foot right now. That was a long painful process.

Thanks Travis. My injury is very mild and not debilitating. Great news that your foot has healed. Your running faster then ever. I hope Swatkins continues to heal. I will assume the 5k was 0.17 miles short and I will round my time to 22 minutes. So I calculate a revised 5k time of 23:17. Pretty good if the assumptions I made are OK. Bob .17 is definitely a safe estimate I think. Good run I hope that injury clears up fast. It is so hard to do well and then have to take time off.I haven't actually beaten any of my stroller times this year. However, that might change this weekend. If I run with my daughter I plan on really going for it the whole race! I really haven't been able to train much lately but I have been running with some strong runners on Thursday night. I plan on really pushing it on Thursday to see where I stand without the stroller. One of the guys is a consistent sub 18 runner so I have my work cutout if I am going to keep up with him. I just watched the Boston Marathon so I am really pumped up. Man that has been a goal of mine since I was about 9 years old. One day, One day! That 3:10 is pretty tough to swallow though and I have 4 more years before that changes at all. Did anyone catch that Kristin M. Price a local NC State Grad finished 10 for the women at Boston. That is pretty cool! quote: Originally posted by RunBobaluRun: Thanks Travis. My injury is very mild and not debilitating. Great news that your foot has healed. Your running faster then ever. Travis, with six months training I think you would be a shoe in for qualifying for Boston. Be careful training so hard so close to a race--it might take some of your edge away.Tough bike ride last night in Apex. We had a fast group and towards the end they pushed hard. With two miles to go, I got dropped. Once I was dropped, the wind put the brakes on trying to get back in the group again. About 1/3 the group dropped towards the end, so I wasn't alone. I checked my hamstring and ankle and they felt OK after the ride, so I was able to get a very strong workout without aggravating any injuries. Today I jogged and the hamstring was starting to feel better. Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

Bob, glad to hear you are recovering well. I can’t wait to hear how your tri turns out.I haven’t run much this week so I need to get something in. I ran fairly hard on last weeks Thursday run and I was sore the next day. I had recovered by Saturday though so I think I will be ok this week. I hope you are right about qualifying. I know that I can do the 3:20 with proper training. It is just getting down those extra 10 minutes that is tough. Man they really make it tough on the young guys to qualify. Just more of a challenge I guess!

Just a reminder to make plans and join us tonight at 6:30 at Playmakers over on Hillsborough Street across from Meredith College. We've planned for an 8K, but there is always the option to run shorter or even walk if you so choose. We'll gather afterwards for some good food, good drink, and even better company! Hope to see you there - we're hoping to break 50 participants tonight (after 42 the first week and 47 last week)! Some people are going to show up early at 6:00 but I think the majority of people will be there at 6:30. ------------------ My Profile

Hi! I'm new to this world of running and am looking for advice and/or direction (if this should be in another forum or topic, please let me know):I just finished dropping 40 pounds (was 215 on 12/31 and I'm 175 today) as part of "get fit now before it's too late" change in lifestyle that I made in anticipation of my 50th birthday which was last month. All the success came with proper diet (NOT dieting) and a vigorous (and religious) walking regimen -- a couple of weeks ago, I complemented walking with running. 2 to 3 times a week I do a 62 min program: 5 min Warmup, Run 5 min, Walk 4 Min, Run 4 min, Walk 3 min, Run 3 min and so on down to 1 minute and then back up to 5 min running again, closing with a cool down. So now I (think) am ready to make the move to running. Yes, I'd like to lose another 10 pounds (165 lbs at 5'9" sounds good to me) along the way. A friend of mine is encouraging me to run a half marathon with him in Disney in Jan '07. My questions to anyone willing to offer advice: 1. Where best in Raleigh to get the proper running shoes? 2. Is a half marathon 8 months away just a pipe dream? 3. I've mostly been relegated to an at-home treadmill, is that something that's giving me more benefit than is real when it comes to outdoor running? 4. For someone new like me, is speed/pace something to shoot for or target? (Typically in the program I highlighted above, I run at 6 mph) 5. Any advice on say, a shorter "program" of say 30 minutes 4x's/week instead of 62 min/2 or 3 times/week? 6. A friend of mine who dropped 45 lbs in '06 did so on the treadmill and he credits it to TiVo of all things (well...that plus he went straight from a simple cardiologist visit for some pain to the hospital where he had an angio...and then another 3 weeks later!) -- I, on the other hand, credit my iPod and mainly being able to listen to podcasts. Simply asked: Are headphones simply a no-no in the running world? 7. Lastly, any other general advice is welcomed! Thanks!---Vincent

1. Where best in Raleigh to get the proper running shoes? I bought mine at Omega Sports in Cary Crossroads, but many places are available from Dicks to Inside-Outside sports and the foot locker. Others can provide some insight. Just make sure somebody is available to fit you properly and that you run-walk on a treadmill or in the store to test the shoes out before you leave. I'm using the Asics Gel Kayano 13 and like them--they are expensive, but give me lots of cushion. 2. Is a half marathon 8 months away just a pipe dream? No. Start training for a 5k race then move up to a 10k training. Once you complete 10k training, you'll be ready for a 1/2 training. Cool running has training programs. 3. I've mostly been relegated to an at-home treadmill, is that something that's giving me more benefit than is real when it comes to outdoor running? When you run on a tread mill set the incline to 1.5 degrees to simulate running on a flat road. Change the incline during the run to simulate hills. 4. For someone new like me, is speed/pace something to shoot for or target? (Typically in the program I highlighted above, I run at 6 mph). I find time and pace goals always helpful in my training. Start with a 5k race goal and work your way from there. 5. Any advice on say, a shorter "program" of say 30 minutes 4x's/week instead of 62 min/2 or 3 times/week? I would recommend the 30 miues 4-5 times a week for 5k training. Once you start training for the 10k you will have to up the anti to some 60 minute runs or more. When you get to the 1/2 training you will be some runs lasting 90-120 minutes at least once a week. Take a look at cool running training programs. Most races do not allow them. When running on the street, I suggest not wearing them. On the sidewalk or a trail, I think they are fine. 7. Lastly, any other general advice is welcomed! You have done great. Keep moving--your going in the right direction.------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

Vincent313, great job on the weight loss! I am always impressed by someone who has the determination to change their lifestyle and loose a significant amount of weight. Bob’s advice is great so I really don’t have much more to add. If you want to do a run with a bunch of people who run at varying speeds then just come out to Playmakers on Hillsborough street tonight around 6:00 or 6:15 PM. We have a group of almost 50 runners that run at various speeds from walking all the way to the competitive level. They are a really great group of people and they give out some really great door prizes(Like $75 gift certificates) after the run. It is free to run but you can join the Raleigh Road Runners club for the year for $25 if you like. I am 6'4" and I will be wearing blue shorts with a grey top tonight if you want to say Hi to me. My name is Travis. Also give the local 5k races a try. Just pick one out that interests you and go for it. Many people walk the whole 5K so there are people at all paces. You won’t believe how fast you will get in shape once you get the running bug. See you at the races! ------------------ My Profile

I just checked out the 5K Run for Wildlife course for tomorrow! Wow! The word flat does not do it justice. There are a few speed bumps and 1 short steep hill near the boat dock(You have to do this section twice though) but that is the extent of the hills. If you ever want to PR in Raleigh this looks like the course to do it on.I ran with some really strong runners last night at the NCRC run. I struggled just to keep them in my sights on them for the last of 5 miles. Anyway, I have a lot of work to do to get up to their level. Nothing a little distance training won’t fix. I think I can keep up with their top end speed I just can’t hope to sustain it as long as they do! 6 flat miles seem like nothing to them. It was a really fun run though. Hope some more people can make it out next week.
