What are the 5 5ks? I might change to a different race if there is a better one.

My wife tried to get me to switch to the Durham Great Human Race. I said no though. That is a fantastic event but they make strollers start in the very back. St. Timothy's has the same restriction but I am hoping they won't enforce it. I really need to start up front tommorrow. The first mile is all downhill. I am going to need every second I can get to make up for those massive hills.

Did a test run last night and the knee was in some pain, so I decided not to tke a chance and I skipped St. Tim's race. I did run a 5k on the ATT this morning and the knee feels good now--still I think the hills would have hurt me in a race.Travis, looking for your report. Here is my report:That hurt! I didn't injure myself or anything like that but that course was freak’n hilly!!!!!! I saw Brad and a few other people I know there and it really was a well run event. Let me say that the little 2nd grade girl who sang the national anthem was absolutely incredible! Hands down that little girl could win American Idol right now. It was better than any super bowl national anthem I have ever heard and this girl was like 10 years old! Anyway on to the running. I decided to run with the fully loaded double stroller. It weighs over 100 Lb and it is probably closer to 110 with all of the stuff we had. I started right on the start line with the double stroller because there was no way I was going to weave my way through that crowd on those tight streets. Someone else tried to start on the line with a stroller. They made them move to the very back. She tried to make me move and thankfully Jim Young spoke up and he said “he is fine where he is”. I started out quick to get out in the open. I thought the whole first mile was going to be downhill. However, there were a few short steep up hills that really slowed me down during that first mile. I was feeling pretty good when I saw the first mile marker. I looked down at my watch and I was at 5:25 with 120 feet to go until the first mile marker. The problem was that one of those little hills was right before the marker. It totally slowed me down for those 120 feet. I ended up with a 5:57 first mile, though. That was pretty close to what I had hoped for. Then I knew what was coming! An 80 foot climb in ¼ of a mile. God, that hurt! You can’t imagine how heavy that stroller really is. And to add further insult my wife was right behind me when I hit the turn around point. That got me motivated on the way back down that hill but I still had the 110 foot climb in about ¾ of a mile. That hill was relentless. It seemed like it would never end. I was barely moving and everyone was passing me like I was standing still. And all along I knew my wife was right behind me. In the end I made it up that monster and still had a decent sprint to the line. I ended up with a 23:45 which isn’t actually that bad. I was pleased that I had done the race because it was for a great cause. Overall, I would say this is the perfect race for those who like to abuse themselves. Oh yea, my wife had a 26:22! She shaved more than 1 minute off of her PR on that ridiculously hilly course. And she was less than 3 minutes behind me! She is getting really, really fast. Go Anj! She you guys at the next race!

JDF - Great job with the stroller, but tell your wife CONGRATS! Just wait 'til she runs a flat course and blows that time away.

If you think the course last weekend was hilly then check this out! The course has a 150 foot climb in 3/4 of a mile!
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=814709 My wife ran a 3.2 mile training run last night in 24:50! That is freakin fast! I am totally worried about the fact that she will probably catch me on the last hill on the course for Sunday. I think I can take her in the sprint to the line though. I ran a 10K in 45:05 this morning. I am starting to get back into it though. I had a few good sprints in there. However, I just don’t have the stamina I used to have. I used to be able to power through a 10K and still have some left. I struggle to make it the whole 6.2 now! Oh well, nothing a little hard work with the double won’t fix! See you all at the races. Anyone dare to challenge Weston Parkway with me this weekend? I actually work at the turn around point and the huge hill is on my long run so I know this course well. And with that knowledge I am still not sure why I am still doing this race. This one is gonna hurt! ------------------ My Profile [This message has been edited by JasonsDrivingForce (edited Mar-29-2007).]

Boy that course was rough today! It was fairly hot and it was ridiculously hilly. I started out up front because it was a small field. I felt really strong for the first mile and before I knew it I was in second only about 200 feet behind the leader. I finished the first mile in 5:39 and I remained in second until the first hill at 1.25 miles! That first hill was a doozy. It was a right angle turn and it was very steep.I was able to make it up the first hill and I actually was feeling pretty good. I was able to really get some speed up on the downhill. I passed a guy on a bicycle actually. That must have really surprised him when the double went flying passed. And then came the HILL! 150 Feet in .75 miles. It was insane. It just never ended. It was relatively straight so you could see the end of it but it just never seemed to get any closer. I passed the 2nd mile in 13:24 but I knew that my 3rd mile was probably going to be the slowest of my life. It was pretty darn close to that. I inched my way up to the top of that mountain in 9:06 for the last mile. I ran the last .1 of a mile in 43 seconds and finished with a 23:14. Not too bad considering what I was pushing. Because of the way the course was designed I didn’t see my wife until the very end. However, she had a terrific time. She ran it in 26:04. She was still within 3 minutes of my time and she knocked of 45 seconds off of her PR on that stupid hilly course. That is pretty amazing. She is really getting quite fast. It was a fun race but I am not sure if I will do that one again next year. I hurt a lot right now! See you guys at the Cary Road Race!

Anybody here? Is this thing on? Maybe you all are out enjoying the nice warm running weather before the next frost sets in this weekend? Is anyone interested in getting together to do a group run? I don’t care what pace we run out. I am just getting sick of running solo and it is not quite warm enough for me to take the kids out in the mornings. I can’t run with my wife either because who would watch the kids. I guess I could go BrookTrout and hire a baby sitter. At 10 bucks an hour that would motivate me to run much faster! ------------------ My Profile

Funny you should mention that. The NCRC's series of greenway runs on Thursday nights in April starts ... tomorrow. All of them will start from Playmakers on Hillsborough Street and will use the greenway going through Meredith College, over the 440 pedestrian bridge, and through to the art museum. First week's run is only a 5k, but they will get longer as the month goes on. I ran the August series last year at Umstead and really enjoyed it. I ran the August series at Umstead last year too. Agreed, it was a great deal of fun! I got a little more than I bargained for on the first run. It was my first time running at Umstead, and I got lost. How does a slow-ish mid-packer get lost while running with a large group of people? I asked for directions from a person who was just as clueless as I was, apparently. I accidently ran much longer than I intended (on trails too!). I really do have a TERRIBLE sense of direction, but that run was one of my best. I love running at Umstead.

Travis, another great race for you and the family. I enjoyed your report.Since the pollen has come out strong, I have not felt well. Pollen normally has no effect on me, but not this year. The worst of it is my joints hurt and my arthritis was acting up--so my ankle, shoulders and knees hurt. Made training more difficult. Now that the cold snap is here I think I'll feel better. Got a new racing bike and took it on the Tuesday night group ride and WOW was it so much faster than my old bike. The bad news is it is uncomfortable to ride long distances. I bought it to be more competitive in races. I'm using my old bike for group rides. Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

Jim Young's race schedule page mentions a race whose name hasn't been heard since 2003 -- The Great Raleigh Road Race. It's listed there as an 8k on the morning of the Fourth of July. Anybody got any further details?Brad Isaiah 40:31

Can anyone recommend a good PT in Raleigh? I'm having foot problems, probably PF, but it won't go away. I'm going to have to stop running until I can take care of this, including probably skipping my 4/28 marathon.------------------ My Profile My Log

I saw Dr. Milner about my PF. The information on the internet is pretty good for doing your own PT. I ran with PF through the Umstead marathon training and the event--but I really hurt myself in the Cary Road Race 10k last year and had to cancel the Grandfather Marathon. It was so bad I had to stop running for six months.Dr. Milner suggested custom shoes inserts to run with--I have these and they do help. I wear these inserts in the office also. I also do foot stretches, which I think are very important to do for life. I wore a splint at night for awhile and that helped. I even found wearing a splint anytime where your foot naturally relaxes like in the office or on a plane helps accelerate the healing. And finally anti-inflammatory medicine helps. Best of luck with your healing. Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

Thanks, Bob. I've got an appt with an orthopedist on Thursday. I'll do what he says as far as running/not running. I've been running on it for two weeks, but at half the mileage, and it's getting worse instead of better. I've been stretching, icing, anti-inflaming, and elevating very frequently. It has worked for me before, but not this time. ------------------ My Profile My Log

More details posted. The new GRRR will start in the 100 block of Hillsborough Street (the area in front of the Confederate Memorial at the Capitol) and go to Cameron Village and back. Should be very, very fast. 8am start on July the Fourth. Advertised as a 5-miler. I like seeing the GRRR on the schedule again; the 1991 running was my first local race after I moved here. Thought I'd poke my head in and say hi. I might try to make one or two of the NCRC greenway runs.Travis, you still looking for someone to run with? I might be interested depending upon when/where. I'm just getting back into running after a bit of a hiatus, so I'm slow (9-10 min miles) and short (4-6 miles) right now. j.

Jay, nice to hear from you. Good luck getting back into running shape.Well the Cary Road Race is looming. Wanted to do the 10k, but my arthritis is acting up, so I plan on signing up for the 5k on race day--just to make sure I'm OK for even running that. I have no goal, but if my arthritis were to step down, I'd like to try again to run under 24 in an even more challenging course than the Oaks. Just over two weeks away from my first triathlon in Clayton. Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile
