Great day to be in Umstead, overall. I ran the middle 8-mile loop of the marathon and was really impressed with the organization of the race and the spirit of the volunteers and aid station workers. Got to see a lot of the marathon field because of the switchbacks and it looks like a heck of a field upfront. Those of us in the back were having a good time, too. :-) I'll definitely pay closer attention to early registration for 2008! Congrats to all the runners.Brad

Great race Dan. A 3:30 in Umstead is an amazing time. You must been in awesome shape. I know I can't keep up with you now.I am battling a case of Strep throat right now so I probably will just cheer my wife on for the Oaks run. If I can ever get healthy again I am going to get back in it! ------------------ My Profile

Thanks, guys. I didn't know how to determine my pace for that race. I've been working with Tinman since January, and he has me running marathon-paced runs at 7:08; Umstead was kind of an uber-long run that he let me work into my schedule, and he told me to run it at 7:36-7:50 (thinking it was a road marathon). His long runs are hard, by the way--not LSD. I figured I'd allow 15-30 seconds more per mile for the hillyness and trailiness (look it up!). I felt great for most of the race, but I'm worried that I might have run it too fast, because I had a hard time picking it up in the end (although the last couple miles are a bear!) and I was exceptionally tired yesterday, needing to cut off a 6-mile run at 5 miles. I rarely have to do that, especially since Tinman's schedules for me have 5 easy runs and two hard ones. Anyway, I think I may have run closer to my real trail MP than I intended. In the end, it's hard not to race when you're in a race. ------------------ My Profile My Log

I am going to Raleigh for vacation this summer for about 3-4 days and was wondering how it is running up there? Lots of good pathways or places your not fearing your life ( IE: running on a college campus and watch people not pay attention to anyone but themselves.)

Cake, you have to run Umstead park. See the official web site: http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/wium/home.htmlAnother great run is the American Tobacco Trail in Wake County. See: http://www.wakegov.com/parks/atc/default.htm Both very safe. There is a some more great paths and greenways like Falls Lake and a greenway trail from Meredith College to Umstead park. Check out this article: http://runningtimes.com/rt/articles/print.asp?id=6237 I'll let others talk about some of their favorites. Hi Bob! It's been too long since I checked in!Sounds like you are doing well and getting ready for some Spring races! We should all meet up at a 5K or 10K this spring/summer. JDF - Sorry to hear about the re-injury to the foot. BrookT - How are you? You were out of running for a while, right? Bonesheal - Fantastic job at Umstead! Umstead was great this year. It was hot, but not as hot as last year, which made it much more enjoyable. For some reason, my legs were really hurting the first 4 miles, but then I kind of settled into a good pace and felt better for the next 9 or 10 miles. Then there were a few miles where I was getting hot, tired, and was not drinking enough. I was so worried that I was going to have the same problem as last year, where I was dizzy and had to walk a lot! But that didn't happen. I started drinking more water and was feeling better by mile 19 or so. I felt good the last 7 miles and even tried to outkick a guy at the end! He beat me by a second though! I finished in 3:43, which was 22 minutes faster than last year when I totally fell apart. Of course, I didn't go into it expecting a fast time! But I had fun and the organizers really put on a great race. And one of the best things about Umstead is that my legs were not sore afterwards. I guess it is the soft surface! Hope everyone is well!

Congratulations son 5th place.I assume you won't be in the Oaks 5k tomorrow--with just finishing a marathon. I'll be there to try and get below 24 minutes. It'll be cold! Bob ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

Just got back from the "Run for the Oaks" and need to brag. (OK, so it's not that impressive for most of you, but it's a milestone for me.) I PR'd by 53 seconds, and for the first time averaged better than 9 minute miles for the distance (so what if it was only 8:59). Don't know what my official time was, but my unofficial "chip" time was 27:55. I'm satisfied, since I've really just been maintaining over the winter, and the last couple of months have been training for a half I'm running at the end of April. Give's me hope, though, for getting to my goal of 25:00 come next fall's races. Now, if I can just hold a 10:00 pace in my half (goal time 2:10) I'll be happy.

relemert, great race. You finished next my friend based on your finishing time. Keep it up. I was able to get my 5k time down from where you are to 25 in about six months. Sprint workouts are the key.I ran the Oaks also. My goal was to break 24 minutes. Cold start, but not as cold as I was expecting, so I changed out my long sleeve shirt for a short sleeve--but kept on the tights. At the start, I had to bang my elbows on a few people to get past them, but in the process went out to fast and almost blew a gasket. Then at the one-mile mark, 7:22, my shoe lace came loose--never happened before. Lost 10-15 seconds on that event. Found a comfortable pace for the second mile, 7:36. Was passed by more people than I passed, but I was in the don't care mood. Third mile, I tried to pick up the pace, but was really tired and the don't care mood was winning, 7:31. I found out a little problem between the three mile mark and the finish line--it wasn't 0.1 miles, something closer to 0.2 miles. On top of all of that, no clock at the finish line. I going to complain to the race director. I'm tired on running poorly prepared races--mile markers not in the correct position and no clock at the finish line or anywhere on the course--thanks for listening to my wining. Well I forgot to stop my watch and by the time I found it running it was past 24 minutes. I'm guessing somewhere near 23:30 was my finish. I was happy with my time, but was unhappy about my performance. I really think I had more in me than I was willing to give--just one of those days. I may have worked out to hard this week. Bob P.S. Bit, are you thinking of going in the Raleigh Marathon this fall? ------------------ Run, bike, swim, lift, but not necessarily in that order. Bob My User Profile

If you complain to the race director, complain about the finish clock not being up higher, not about it being missing. There was actually one there, but you couldn't see it until you were right at the finish line. It was blocked by a truck or something, with the result that you couldn't really tell your finish time until you were just about in the chute. Having it on top of the truck rather than behind it would help finishing runners gauge their kick. I had my own questions about the mile markers. But I was impressed by the good crowd on a cold day. I used the race to help fill out a 10-miler this morning, so I was just there to jog. Good job as usual on the post-race party. Got to meet Travis and his family as well. Thanks Misterfun for the update. I want my complaint to be accurate. I know these are small issues, but I feel a race needs to have basics in place, so that runners can enjoy the race more.O course I didn't have my stuff together with a shoe lace coming untied. Bob- Great job meeting your goal. You can push it more next time! I haven't decided about the Raleigh marathon. It's hard to pass up one that's so close though. We'll see.

"Rlemert - Great 5K! Good luck at the half. Which one is it?" Eugene, Oregon. I grew up there, and my folks still live there. It's part of the first marathon they've held there in 25 years (and those were Olympic Trials), and it's a good excuse to visit my folks (my did turns 80 in June). I've actually run the second half of the full marathon course on some of my training runs when I've been back home before, and it's a great place to run. It essentially follows a bike/jogging track through a big linear park on both sides of the Willamette River. The path is wide enough that you could run four abreast for the most part (a few narrower places), but that's why they've saved it for last - get rid of those of us doing the half and let the full people have a chance to spread out. If you ever get a chance to get out there and run, I highly recommend it. I figure the end of April has about 50/50 chance of rain, but the rain out there is slow-and-steady (not like the thunder-bangers we get here). July and August are so much more comfortable to run in than here, though, with the low humidity and morning temps in the 50's-60's. (BTW - I've got a cold keeping me up. I'm not normally on the forums at this time of night.)

Official "Run for the Oaks" results have been posted:http://www.active.com/results/viewresults_multiple.cfm?filename=1395574_20070318020854.txt BTW - Has anyone else noticed that when you try to get to race results on Active.com through the runnc.com web site, you get a 'garbaged' page? I had to go directly to the Active.com site to get the results above.

Great race on Saturday everyone. Rlemert, fantastic run on your part. You were flying! Man I almost didn’t recognize you also. Have you lost weight? Again, great run. Keep it up.I ran the race but I was in no shape to try for a PR. My foot finally has stopped hurting but I was battling a major case of strep throat all week. I ran a 102+ degree fever for more than 3 days. The antibiotics kicked in enough for me to get through the 5K but that was about all I could do because I was coughing up a lung. I ran with my wife and get this! She pushed the double jogger the whole way. It weighs about 100 pounds now and she probably only goes about 105. She managed to do a 27:30 chip-time(we started in the middle of that mess called the pack). A 27:30 with the double is an outstanding time! I ran with her the whole way to try to keep her on pace and to let her know when the downhills and uphills were coming. She is totally into running now which is great. We plan on doing this race next weekend. I will probably push the double jogger instead of my wife though. I was a little surprised at how she ran with the jogger. She bumped a few people with it and she had the mindset that slower runners should get out of her way. I tried to remind her that the other runners actually have the right of way and that it is her job to avoid them. Not sure if she got it though. In any event I think I will be the one with the stroller for now on. In the 50+ races I have done with the stroller I have never even come close to hitting anyone. Starting in the front helps with that though. http://www.runnc.com/Race_Schedule.htm#sttim

Anyone else doing ST. Timothy’s 5K? I plan on doing it with my family. I will probably push the double this time instead of letting my wife push it. The hilly course would be brutal for her with the stroller. Come say hi to me if you see the big yellow stroller. Bob, I don’t think we have met yet have we. I saw about 4 other people from the message board at the last race. I can’t keep everyone straight. ------------------ My Profile

Here is the gmaps-pedometer for the ST. Timothy’s race tomorrow. This is an extremely hilly course. I was wrong originally: There are two climbs and two decents on the course tomorrow. One climb and one decent is 112 feet in half a mile and the other climb and decent are 79 feet in ¼ of a mile!!!!! Those are some of the steepest climbs I have ever seen in Raleigh. This one is going to hurt! There are no flat sections at all! Sounds like a good challenge with the double! See you all there.http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=795045 I am shooting for some pretty uneven splits. I hope to have a 5:25 for the first mile, a 7:00 flat for the second mile, a whopping 9:00 for the last mile, and a 40 second last 10th for an overall of 22:05. That is actually a very aggressive time on this course. Here is one where the stroller is going to make a huge difference in time! ------------------ My Profile [This message has been edited by JasonsDrivingForce (edited Mar-23-2007).] [This message has been edited by JasonsDrivingForce (edited Mar-23-2007).]

I'll be there for the mileage only. I should already have a 10k under my belt by the time the race starts, so I'll just be jogging, not racing. I need to wind up with about 15 miles on Saturday to stay on track for the Country Music Marathon next month. If you're not doing a race on Saturday, you ain't tryin'. I counted 5 5Ks and an 8K all taking place in the Triangle on the 24th. Brad Isaiah 40:31
