I am thinking of running the City of Oaks Half Marathon this year, but I also want to run the 2nd Empire Grand Prix. I am reluctant to sign up for the half marathon without knowing the 2007 Grand Prix schedule. I looked on the Web, and all I could find was last year's Grand Prix information. Does anyone know about the 2nd Empire Grand Prix 2007 schedule? Will there be a Grand Prix?

Thanks! Good luck on your upcoming races!

Its a safe bet there will be a grand prix this year since its an annual event. As for the races, Its probably a lock for the Turkey Trot and Second Empire race to definitely be in there. The others im not so sure about. They'll accommodate for the marathon and schedule around that weekend im sure. The only race ive heard being dropped in the Inside Out Sports half marathon they had last fall because of the marathon having a half option.

Thanks Dakuwan! Sorry so late in replying. I ran the Inside/Out Half Marathon last year, and some of the Grand Prix. I'd like to run more of the Grand Prix races this year. I'll probably sign up for the City of Oaks Half Marathon, and hope that the Grand Prix schedule falls in around it.

I am also thinking of running the Cary Road Race. Anyone else running this one?

The Cary Road Race is in my sights. Not sure if I'll do 5k or 10k.

Well I might be out for another few months. I started back running again last week. And what do you know I think I broke my foot again. It is not as bad as before but now I have a similar pain in the bone next to the one I broke. Something is seriously wrong with my foot. I am going back to the doctor as soon as I get back from this business trip.

Hope everyone stays healthy out there. Hopefully I will be able to get back into it sometime.

Oooh No, JDF! I hope your injury is not as serious as you think it might be. I hope the doctor has good news for you. I'll cross my fingers:-)

RunBobaluRun best of luck to you with the Cary Road race. I hope your training is going well. I ran the CRR 5k last year, and I'll run the same distance this year. My time last year was not all that great, but I had a wonderful experience.
Happy Trails,
Wrath

Travis, very sorry to here this. There most be something the doctor missed.

Training is going very well. I wanted to run Wake Med 5k tomorrow, but got a project I have to complete at the same time, so I decided I'll run a 5k race tomorrow on my own and see how I'm doing. I'm signed up for the Oaks, so that will be the best test of my improvement.

With Umstead one week away, we must have some tense people out there. In case I forget--I wish you all luck!

Hi Raleigh Folks,

I've been busy and stuff and haven't had much of a chance to run - or post!

I've fallen pretty far out of shape - averaging a run maybe once a week or so, sometimes not even that, for the past 2-3 months. I've gained 10 pounds, too!

I'm slowly getting back into it.

Anyway - I've a special request. I have twin daughters who have some social and language delays, and I'm actually looking to hire a person to work with them for about 10-15 hours/week. I'm working with a consultant who will provide the training for this job.

I know there at some point were some special-ed folks on this list - don't know if they're still here or not - but in any case, if anyone knows anyone who might be interested in this part-time job, point them to my add on craigslist:

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/edu/287322631.html

I figure this would be a good job for college students in the field of special education, former teachers who are looking for a part-time gig, etc.

Anyway, happy running, folks! I hope to be back in shape before too long.

Thanks for your kind thoughts guys. Importunely, I really think there is something wrong with my foot. Anyway, this just means that my wife is going to have to pick up the torch. She has been training with the double jogger lately. Now it is up over 100 pounds(My daughter eats like a horse). Heck my wife only weighs about 105. Try pushing your weight at speed up a hill sometime. That will get you in shape!

She is running the wake distance 5K tomorrow. I am stuck in San Diego so I can’t be there to cheer her on. Please encourage her if you see her and my son with the big yellow stroller. She has worked hard but she really isn’t built to run like I am. I am pretty impressed that she has been able to run in the upper 20’s for a 5K even with the stroller.

Please wish her luck for me!

My wife just called. She had a 27:33 with the single jogger(60+ Lbs) for the 5K. Good Job Anj! That was her PR by almost 1 minute. Note: her previous best was solo!

Please forward my congrats to your wife. She is doing a great job carrying the torch for you.

I could not make the Wake Med race, so I ran my own race later today. Did a 24:28 5k. Very happy with that number. Want to break 24 in the Oaks race.

JDF - I think I saw your wife this morning as she was going in the door to the registration area, but I didn't have a chance to say hello or anything. Glad to hear she did so well. So she's inherited your insanity with the stroller? I think I'll pass. For one thing, my son is already 12. For another, I'm already weighing up around where she is with the stroller - I don't need any extra burdens, I've got enough of my own <g>.

I decided to go for the 10k - another reason I wasn't able to follow up with your wife (the two starting lines were 200 yards apart and the two races went in different directions). No PR (60:36), but I'll take what I got considering the hills and the fact that I went out way too fast. I'm training for a half at the end of April (Eugene, OR - my home town, so I'll be able to combine it with a visit with my folks), and I decided I need the miles. I lost a week early February with the crud that's been going around.

I'm giving serious thought to the City of Oaks 5k in a couple of weeks just to see how much of my fall speed I have left, and I'd like to find another local 10k early in April to "top off" my training. I think there's one two weeks before my half, but I'm concerned that's too close to my target race.

By the way, good luck with the foot.

Travis--
I was at the Cary 5k--I think I saw your wife, if the stroller she was pushing was a single. That's pretty brave; I leave my kids at home. I hope you get your foot figured out and fixed.

I'm excited about Umstead. It's not my A race, so I was considering doing just 20 miles of it, but I'm going to do the whole thing. Can anyone tell me how far apart the water stations are, and if they provide anything other than water? I need to know if I need to bring anything.

The WakeMed results are up now:
http://www.active.com/results/viewresults.cfm?e_id=1399642

I got a 24:06 on the 5K which Im extremely happy with. That means I've only lost 1:01 from my PR 5K at the Nike 5K in November. Couldnt ask for anything better especially since ive done so little training so far this year. Those end hills Saturday were killer and Im sure is what kept me from hitting even closer to my PR.

Im really looking forward to the Oaks run next weekend now.

Edit to add: I put the athlinks.com add results request in also

They've posted a course map with aid stations marked at http://www.umsteadmarathon.com/umstead2006map.jpg. The website says the aid stations will be providing water and Gatorade, so if you need anything other than that you may want to plan on bringing it yourself.

I'm going to bandit politely the middle section of the race -- Graylyn entrance to Graylyn entrance -- so hopefully I'll see y'all there.

The map shown in an earlier post shows the location of the water stations. There should be food about mile 19 at the end of Reedy Creek. If the temperature is warm, consider bring additional fluids by way of Camelback if you have one you use--the stations are failrly far apart in areas.

Umstead is days away--good luck.

Looking forward to the Oaks race.

Damn, Bonesheal! Nice PR on that hilly course! Are you doing the Oaks run? I wouldn't mind trying to keep up with you.

Yea that was my wife with the single. She is going through a rough time right now and running is her only saving grace. Wish her luck. As for me I still am unsure of what I am going to do. My foot is healing again but it still is only about 60 percent. I will give the run for the Oaks a try with the stroller because I can take most of the pressure off of my foot that way. Any way good luck to everyone running umstead. Let us know how you did. It should be perfect weather for it.

Thanks, Travis. Now would be a good time for me to race with you, since I may be able to keep up when you're injured, undertrained, and pushing a stroller. However, if I race three weekends in a row I think my wife will explode. She asked me today if I thought I'd be home from the Umstead Marathon by 11:30 (after I told her it started at 9). She was disappointed when I told her it would be much, much later.

Bones, I had the same question asked of me two years ago on my first Umstead race and my wife was disapppointed becasue I wouldn't be home before lunch. Last year she new better. Now she is OK with me being out for hours on some training event.

I made my wife sound bad in my last post, but the truth is that she has always been very tolerant of me playing sports or going off with friends. She has had health problems for months now that require that she sleep a lot during the day, so leaving her with our three kids is more of a burden than it would usually be. I thought it was funny that she thought I could finish a marathon in less than two hours--she really thinks highly of me as a runner.

It took my wife some time to grasp that people can run for hours not just minutes. It took her even longer to understand that I was one of them.

OK you Umstead runners. Looks like it will be warm tomorrow--not as bad as last year, but not marathon friendly. Drink plenty. Bring your camelback if you have one. Best of luck to all.

I ran the loop in Umstead this morning. I was lucky enough to see the Umstead first place runner pass me at mile 10, mile 16 and mile 21. He was looking sharp and had a good lead on all the runners. It was hot for running a marathon, so I hope everyone survived.

I did a great tempo run on North Turkey Creek trail--I'm ready for the Oaks!

I did the Umstead Marathon yesterday, and loved it! I'll try to do it every year. We had to be there more than an hour early to park, so that hour was spent shivering and going to the port a potty repeatedly. I usually don't eat anything before a race, but on the advice of an article off of McMillan's website, I ate a big breakfast at 6 am, then a snack at 7, both with a lot of water. I was worried about how that would work out, but I never felt like I needed to go to the bathroom during the race.

Not knowing how to project my pace on the hilly course, I decided to shoot for 8:05s to 8:20s. I found myself ahead of this pace for the first several miles, including the singletrack, but I was still in the middle of the pack. By the first turnaround, I could see that a lot of the runners who had been close to me near 3 miles were now way ahead of me.

I stopped at all of the water stops long enough to drink a water and a gatorade (not long, but helpful psychologically). The water stops were about three miles apart, so I was usually getting thirsty by the time I got to one.

I ran for several miles with Ben, a firefighter from Wilson. He stayed a little long at a water stop, and I kept going. I think he must have gotten hurt, because I stopped seeing him after mile 14.

I still felt great when I got to Graylyn Drive the second time (between 14 and 15 miles), and there I finally started passing people after running alone for a long time. I counted people at the turnaround, and figured I was in about 30th place. This gave me motivation. I usually do well on downhills, and I picked a few people off. Some people that were way ahead of me were starting to slow down, and I was passing them. I was wondering how long my legs would last, though. I could feel a big difference after 19 miles. I was sure I could finish running, but I thought I may come to a time when I had to slow way down.

I counted people on the Cedar Ridge Trail, and figured out that I was in about 20th. The first 15 get placques, so I made some extra effort. By the time I got off of Cedar Ridge, I was 16th, but the next person ahead of me was nowhere in sight. I hustled (my pace only improved a little, but it is a hilly finish). I passed a few joggers, but I didn't recognize any of them, and they weren't wearing numbers, so I figured they weren't in the race. I made a desperate, fast finish to try to catch one more person, but never saw anyone. When I went through, someone handed me a placque for 13th place, so I must have passed a few people somewhere, maybe at the water stop, maybe some of the joggers.

After the race, I drank so much water that I think I may have been dehydrated. I was able to keep drinking and eating for the rest of the day.

The race was very well-run. It started on-time, drink stations were frequent enough and manned by cheerful volunteers, the schwag was very good. We got a technical Tshirt, gu, rice, socks, and a pint mug with the Umstead logo. After the race there was plenty of food, including Moe's burritos. It must be a hard race to organize, given the limited parking and non-driveability of the course, but as far as I could tell, everything went off without a hitch.

Super race Dan. I impressed that you were actual thinking of passing runners at the end instead of thinking about slowing down and finishing. I happy that you got a plaque--you earned it. Great race report.
